Yuck, I feel so Soiled Already on: March 17, 2009, 09:54:26 AM
I did something last week that is haunting me, and even though I haven't even completed (and have barely even started) the actions that I've laid out for myself I already feel disgusted. I mostly feel this way because about 17 years ago I had a video tape depicting the depravity soon to be defiling my television screen and it was pretty unwatchable after about 10 minutes or so. It was a video tape of one of GG Allin's shows.

What I did on Friday was order Hated the documentary about GG Allin. I've never been a fan of the man, his music, or his poop flinging and self mutilating antics but for some reason I've become increasingly curious about the why of it all. I've always been a fan of his song titles.

Along with interviews of GG, his band, and others this film includes a couple of his shows complete with an unflinching and uncensored view of the ensuing vileness. This part I really don't care to see not so much because it disturbs me to see some guy pooping on himself, ramming his fingers up his ass, and beating himself in the head with a microphone until he's bleeding, but because it's just gross and at the same time pretty uninteresting (to me, I'm sure some people find it interesting). Just finding it the slightest bit distasteful then makes me feel as if I'm being used by GG, which ultimately I think was part of what he was after. I think he enjoyed the attentions of those who really got off on his act, but what he really was after were the thrills invloved with making a complete spectacle of himself and making you despise him. He wasn't there to entertain you, you were there to entertain him.

He also seemed to have taken on the role of a sin eater of sorts, I mean, he really genuinely wanted the world to hate him, and although he lived his life as the persona of "GG Allin" it seems to me that at least some of it was well crafted showmanship if you will... He always insisted that he was the real deal, that none of what he did on stage was "fake shit like GWAR" but I can't help feeling that his urgent insistence of his "realness" isn't akin to professional wrestlers saying you can't fake getting dropped on your head from a ladder when asked if pro wrestling is real.

Anyway, I both can't wait to watch this DVD but am also not looking forward to seing GG covered in poop. After I've watched it are there any of you that would like to see this DVD? If so maybe we can mail it around.

Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

I don't care much for GG Allin but I read what you wrote and the third paragraph makes a lot of sense.
Pour the wine, hold the grind, quarter to nine, let's go.

Or I can download it like the rest of the computer literate world.  I'll go put it in my queue.  See I've recently discovered many years ago this newfangled thing called "torrents" where I can get everything for free.

Well I have a comfy-ass canvas chair and I have this super secret for free disk space called "deleting the movies I download after watching them".  But hey, if you like to spend your money on movies, go for it.  I prefer to take the money I save on music, movies, porn, PC games, and software and spend it on food, drugs, and Wii points.

The two ideas can be combined with a "HTPC".

So how about the shitty quality of most torrents?

How do you solve that?

I don't think they are shitty at all.....very watchable in fact.  But I guess it's a matter of opinion if you're one of those "OMG I can only watch movies on Blu Ray on my 1000 inch flatscreen HD plasma" people.

Most of the torrents I've downloaded already looked kinda shitty on a 17 inch monitor, so I don't see how they could look any better on a 27 inch TV.

Anyway, torrents suit me fine for things that I plan on watching once by my self on my computer. In fact I downloaded Hamlet 2 last night as per Lothar's recommendation. Anything I plan to watch with other people or possibly re-watch at a future date I prefer on DVD.

Ususally, your 27" TV will have a higher dot pitch & lower resolution, especially if it's 720P (which most <30" screens are).  Thus, with a lower resolution, the rip will scale better to the screen.

Umm........I have one of those color TVs that are big and heavy.  Is that HD?

Extremely unlikely.  Probably SD (Standard Definition - 480i), thus making the torrents even BETTER for you.

Downloading torrents is OK, but the same way as with ROM emulation or Napster back in the day, I only really use it to preview stuff. If I like a film then I'm going to seek it out on DVD, if I like a game then I'm going to buy the original cart it came on, and if I like a song then I want the liner notes too. Not to mention that even though the artist in all of these cases makes only a tiny fraction, he still deserves the tiny fraction of the sale.

The only artists that would benefit from my purchase that I would feel bad about DLing and not purchasing would be the really small indie bands.

.....which is the majority of the music I like.

......shut up. Do as I say, not as I do.

Re: Yuck, I feel so Soiled Already Reply #21 on: March 20, 2009, 03:48:35 PM
To get good viewing out of torrents, I stick with divx or xvid.

If you have a ps3, you just put it on a memory stick and slam it home, as ps3 has divx compatibility.

Or you can pick up a dvd player with divx compatibility for next to nothing.

I have a 42" plasma and it looks fine. It's no blu-ray, but yeah.

Here's my gripe, though: I've been archiving blu-ray movies, and it's ridiculous how they decide to use up as much disc space as they can, just because they can. It's sloppy.

Re: Yuck, I feel so Soiled Already Reply #23 on: March 22, 2009, 03:06:58 PM
A couple of points...

One: Hated is a great documentary, I loved it. The "gross" footage wasn't nearly as vile as the videotaped GG show I had back in 93. I do have a major gripe with Amazon however. The DVD I bought was the "special edition", which includes commentary tracks and a couple of extra interviews. The one thing it DOESN'T have is GG's last show and his search for drugs afterwards, filmed the night he died. This footage was included on the original DVD, and not only is there no mention of it not being on the special edition, but Amazon in fact uses customer reviews from the first DVD as special edition reviews where the reviewers, making it appear that the last show footage is in fact, on the special edition.

I guess you could include this souring experience as a win for the "Torrent" column.

Two (about torrents): I am poor. I cannot afford a PS3, or a media center. I can't afford a large screen HD TV so I've never experienced a torrent on one, but I really doubt a torrent is going to look as nice as the real deal. If I want to watch something socially I'm not doing it with a torrent, because I have no way to transport it to my TV. Now, before anybody goes recommending a way to jury rig some kind of torrent delivery system, keep in mind that I've been there done that many other times with different technologies. My time is more valuable than half assing some kooky device only to watch a torrent filled with artifacts like Hamlet 2 was.

I'd much rather spend a couple of bucks renting a DVD or buying one from my favorite genre and enjoy the product as it was meant to be presented than go through a bunch of hassle to watch low quality video.

Pretty much every torrent I've ever downloaded has been shitty in some way or another. To me bit torrents are like 30 packs of Miller Lite, is good for what it's intended, but don't expect it to be the best tasting beer you've ever had.

Gotta love being able to reliably get perfect quality DVDs for about US$5.50 a piece, and special-order stuff (older movies, etc) for about US$7.50 per.

No specials features though. Boo fucking hoo.
ever tried. ever failed. no matter. try again. fail again. fail better.

Re: Yuck, I feel so Soiled Already Reply #25 on: March 22, 2009, 10:12:47 PM
I've never seen more than a few clips of a GG video.  I'd kind of like to see it.

I agree about going through the hassle to see a low quality video.  Also, for $8.99 a month you can stream unlimited movies from netflix to your computer or tivo/xbox360/whatever.  There's much less hassle to do it that way than to get torrents.

Re: Yuck, I feel so Soiled Already Reply #26 on: March 22, 2009, 10:42:12 PM
$27 bucks.

Seriously, you can put 4 or 5 divx movies on one dvd, and on a crt tv you really won't be able to tell much difference at all.

Search for movies from a guy named axxo. His are always top notch.

Emp: I'm going to hang on to it now, I really like it. Plus, it's not nearly as nasty as I was afraid it might be and I'm no longer worried about my family finding it after my death and thinking I was some kind of sicko. I highly recommend it, you should check it out if you get a chance.

Lothar: Thanks for pointing that thing out, I gotta admit it's pretty cool and inexpensive. Now all I need to do is replace my broken DVD writer  :-\

This thing (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136325) is more expensive, but it uses USB disks/thumb drives rather than DVDs.  And it can do HDMI or composite, supporting the gammut of playback possibilities!

Re: Yuck, I feel so Soiled Already Reply #29 on: March 23, 2009, 11:45:57 AM
First of all, 27 bucks is pushing it for me right now, and I'm not being a smart ass.

But still, I'd probably go with the permanent storage of DVD's over thumb drives. If I was going to simply transfer shit back and forth I'd hack my Tivo and just FTP my downloads to it.

Come to think of it, I'd probably just do a home brew DVR to use as a media server, but only if I had a few dozen hours to kill. Which I don't.
