Of course, I think of everyplace south of the DC metro area and east of California as being "conservative nutbag land we should just sell to Mexico."

The American south is really different than where I am from. And scary.

I've been to Myrtle Beach a few times, and it is weird to see only black people as maids.

Come down here to the SW Gulf Coast... there ARE NO BLACK PEOPLE. They have checkpoints and if you ain't got a colored permit, they send you back to Hendry County... where they still have chain gangs...

The first sentence is fact. There are no black people (or very, very few) in Lee County. The rest was a joke. Except the part about chain gangs in Hendry County. That part is also true.

Ugh, the confederate flag shit isn't just confined to the south. Here in semi-rural Michigan you're not driving a car if it isn't a large pick up truck with at least one confederate flag on it.

Yeah, kind of, except ours have more guns and don't know how to drive. But really you just have to look at Detroit and the surrounding suburbs to see the effects of Northern racism. People don't often realize that the North was just as bad as the South in regards to racism.
The girl and I are about to head down to Georgia for the week and I've decided we're going to head through the heart of South Carolina. It'll be an interesting drive.
A few years back I took a Civil War class and we read Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz. It was a pretty interesting look at how the south deals with the Civil War. It seemed the old people who grew up with and knew the Confederate veterans were pretty well adjusted. It was the young kids and people from Union sympathizing counties that were the biggest racists and segregationists.
