I prefer Bourbon over Scotch and some Irish. Middleton and Tullamore being the exceptions. And the only Bourbons I like are Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek.

I prefer Woodford Reserve to Maker's Mark.

I've become a fan of George DIckel whisky since visiiting the distillery in TN.

Irish Whiskey is generally my drink of choice.  I'm partial to Powers if I'm not looking to shell out too much money.  They sell Middleton a couple of blocks away, which I find extremely tempting though paying so much for a bottle of whiskey doesn't seem to be in the cards right now.  If I could, I'd never drink anything else (except a good dark beer).

I've tried a bunch of different kinds of Scotch, but haven't tasted one I'd want to drink on a regular basis.

Doesn't anybody drink to get fucked up? Or is everything about taste nowadays?

Re: Maker's Mark Reply #4 on: February 21, 2009, 11:16:06 PM
It starts out as taste, getting fucked up usually comes along about two hours in.

I prefer scotch over bourbon, but that's mostly because I got wasted on bourbon too much at school.

I had decided in my last year at university to start at the low end of the whiskey spectrum and to work my way up to the real treats. Well let's just say there's an ever-growing morass of low-end stuff. I never got past the $12-13 per bottle mark, although I was drinking hard for most of my senior year. So speaking as one of countless authorities on the low low end, shit bourbon is considerably more palatable than shit scotch.

Getting fucked up can be a happy by-product of enjoying however many drinks, but it's not the main goal. Most times when I drink, I wouldn't say I get fucked up. My regular drinks are beer or red wine (or both), so when I drink whisky/whiskey or tequila, it's usually just a glass/shot or two, just because I enjoy it. I'm also sort of a lightweight when it comes to spirits, at least compared to how much beer or wine I can handle. I can easily put back 20 beers without being drunk, but 3 or 4 decent glasses of Scotch and I'm sloppy.

Maker's is still the king.  One night I showed up to a house party with a fifth of Maker's, I can't remember what happened after but I'm sure it was a good time.
Pour the wine, hold the grind, quarter to nine, let's go.

What volume is a fifth?

Remember, before you ridicule me, I was raised metric.

Mosh, a fifth is just over 17 jiggers.

Before you ridicule me, remember that I was raised by an owner of a liquor store.

American measurements are usually sold as

Half-gallons/Handles: 1,750ml
Liters: (straight forward)
Fifths (Fifth of a Gallon): 750ml
Pints: 375ml (and this doesn't actually equate with how much a pint is but I'm not sure this is how it's sold).

Going smaller than that, who knows?  Who buys less than 375ml at a time?
Pour the wine, hold the grind, quarter to nine, let's go.

I'll still drink a pint of gin and walk into a show from time to time.  Pints are the perfect serving size for concert going.

I didn't really appreciate tequila, specifically good tequila, till I stayed in a hotel in Mexico with a dedicated tequila bar.

Tequila is my personal savior.  Truly a creation of los dioses en el Cielo.

There's a lot of stuff I can't stand (all gin, most scotch, any flavored anything - especially vodka), but I can literally drink tequila from bottom of the barrel to top shelf and feel great all night and in the next morning as well.  I've never really understood it, especially when so many people hate the stuff.
Pour the wine, hold the grind, quarter to nine, let's go.

White rum is a great drink... standard dark rums are normally awful but lately I've been getting fed Indian rum and I don't mind it!
