There's a section further down specifically about the studies.  It indicates that it is an erect measurement.  Even further down, they mention a particular study finding that the average flaccid length is 3.9".  8" is an average erect porn dick, according to one of the sources listed at the end of the wiki article.

They mention even later in the article that the most sensitive length of a female's genitalia is ~4" in length.  Therefore, the median penis should be able to stimulate the most sensitive region of the female genitalia.

I think it absolutely makes sense that the average penis would be 5.1-5.9", since I don't there really is an evolutionary advantage to having a giant dick.  I would actually bet on it being at the low end of the range, given that the studies they list that seem to have the smallest bias in sample or reporting are on the low end of the range.

Given these statistics you've uncovered regarding the most sensitive length of a female's genitalia, I suppose the 5-inch average would make sense if the point of evolution were to please the woman.

You'd think humans would be most similar to other animals where reproduction is the point, though. I'd think off-hand that the closer you can get the tip of the sperm-delivery-wand to the uterus the better your chances of fertilization would be especially given the probability of multiple partners with potentially more evolutionarily advanced johnsons.

Primates generally don't have big penises.  Humans have the biggest penis of all primates, both in terms of absolute size and in terms of size relative to body (which I just noticed they also mention at the beginning of the wikipedia article).  Whether it's monogamy, more generally the way primates organise themselves socially, or various other factors, there obviously has not been a strong correlation between larger cocks & evolutionary success for primate species.
