Hey guys,
After 10+ years, it appears I have finally been banned from the Hipforums. I don't know what the reason is, but when I went to log in this morning, it said I am permanently banned. Skip must have found out what I said about him. Oh well, that place was getting to be dull anyway.
Guess I'll be posting here from now on.

Previously, I railed against Twitter as a medium for communication. However, now that I've used it for a while, I "get" it. At least, I get one use for it.
Personally, I consume more on Twitter than I produce.
- I follow a few of my favorite public performers.
- I follow several websites.
- I follow a few friends.
These provide a reasonable level of information and amusement every morning. Some folks (like Dylan, and - strangely - NASA) produce a lot of content but, for the most part, they deliver bite-sized updates on things in which I have an interest. Thus, I'm able to replace RSS feeds with something that is equally robust, since it includes personal updates from individuals. Note: this is how I understand facebook to work as well.
As for my own content, almost half of my posts are replies or reproductions of other posts. So, even the content which I could titularly claim to have produced is actually just rebroadcasting.
Long story short: I like me on Twitter too. I think it's an excellent service for how I use it. How I use it, though, is not exactly traditional (not withstanding that, I think - as an aggregation service - a lot of folks here could grow to enjoy it).
Also, It's really quite fun to try to type a thought out in exactly 140 characters!

The second thread in EA's new forum was a user-generated poll in which the stoners voted 20-14 to get rid of her forum. The third thread had the title, "this forum fucking sucks". I have no idea what else Skip expected to happen with this.
All of HF is sort of a twisted sociology experiment gone astray. Some of these people have invested many hours per day in HF for 8 to 10 years, so they feel like they have earned considerable respect for their investment. The site owner hates that kind of thinking. I'm watching all this unfold like an uprising in a communist or Islamic country. The common people are passionate, but their movement is destined to be crushed by the government. You know how it's all going to end.
Another problem with having so many long-term members is that too many people have totally exhausted their patience with each other. The infighting is unbelievable at times. As a relative n00b, only there since February, the internal dynamics still shock and surprise me at times with the extreme levels of animosity between people who have never met.

Those were good days. Very different from the web today. Computers were expensive and hard to use, so the online crowd was quite a bit above average - a step up from NPR listeners, if you can imagine that. Online advertisers targeted them with high-end products and services. Sometimes it sucked for ordinary people trying to post, like me. Seems like every discussion had somebody in it who was an expert in that field. I didn't get to say much.
The thing that hasn't changed is the basic concept of threads and subforums. That goes all the way back to Prodigy, which came before CompuServe. They did a good job of thinking all that out, to come up with something that has lasted for 20+ years.

Arguably, social networking sites like Facebook & Twitter are actually doing a significant amount of work to re-engineer the way conversations are held on the internet. It's just places like HF & LG that hold on to a slowly-outdating mode.

You're right, but I don't like the way that Facebook pushes people in the direction of talking mostly to old real-life friends and people who live nearby. I can do that without a computer. I always thought it was better to group people online primarily by common interests.

OK what I see there Resso is that nudism and children seems to be a big issue for you. But children participating in unclothed activities with their families and friends does not equal pedophilia. If it did I would have been in jail 5 years ago. My 10 year old step-daughter refuses to wear clothing at home, even in the winter, and this is not behaviour that I have encouraged. Quite the opposite. But it's neither morally nor legally wrong. It's actually healthy for people to not be ashamed of their bodies (except Danzig, shame on you). The only moderation has been to remove someones real name. I havent removed the posts, and dont intend to now that I have amended them to remove the real name. Everyone in the know still knows what is being discussed.
Like underclass, I'm not comfortable with a discussion about potentially criminal behaviour of another board on my board. The reason I am leaving it is that the ex HF users have steam to blow off, and for the most part, are doing so in a responsibly. Please keep real names out of the discussion, and be careful about what you post.
I'm hoping they'll take the appropriate action in appropriate forum if they believe there is criminal activities occuring elsewhere, as this message board IS NOT the forum to do so. I also hope, that once the steam has been blown off, the ex HF users will join in the other discussions around the board.

There were many more issues than the nudity alone.
(And claims have been made that the forums we had in mind had much commercial and intentional promotion of certain topics)

The FIRST thing has to be a set of RULES, that are for EVERYONE.
It pretty well goes without saying that slander and libel would be Against the Rules, as well as anything illegal, or spamming, so as long as no one oversteps those lines, there should be no problems.
The Problems start when the Rules aren't easy ~ and when you allow personal feelings to interfere with your banning process, and that's the fault of the owner(s) and their choice of Mods.

I agree with Zoomie on some of his points, the thing is you cant control the minds of other people in this regard. If someone gets off on that sort of imagery, then there's very little anyone can do except report observed behaviour. You cant change someone elses impulses without specialised medical help.
Case in point, recently (a year or two ago), an photo exhibition was raided in Sydney. The cause of the raid was a particular photo of a naked pre-adolecent girl. There wasnt any sexual connotations to the picture, but it was a full frontal nude, the picture was framed in an art exhibition, and the photographer has a long history of photo exhibitions of nude people, including children. None of the children were ever sexually handled during these photo sessions.
However, it was deemed child pornography by the moral keepers of this country, the photograph (amongst others) was confiscated and I believe destroyed, all sorts of bullshit political talking heads spouting dogshit about how it was evil, blah blah blah... The context of the photograph or of the exhibition was never considered. But apparently, all manner of perverts were going to attend, whip out their junk and beat off in front of said picture. Or so the empty vessels with nothing better to do than tell YOU how to live painted it that way.
Dont get me wrong, I'm not about defending the piece, I'm not comfortable with even being seen looking at even innocent pictures of naked children (Anne Gedes shit particularly annoys me), but context needs to be considered. You see, what has been done here is very similar to police tactics during demonstrations. If there is a gathering of more than 6 people in the one place or something stupidly small, it is deemed in the eyes of the police a crowd, and potentially there could be a 'riot'.
Their tactic in such instances is to 'disperse' the crowd, so they end up all going off in their own little groups.

Unfortunately, this is what happens to free speech sites. People carry things too far, and moderation has to be increased.
Of note here is that moderation was not increased. It's always been the rules around here to not post personal info like contact (phone, email, address) and name for folks that aren't you.
As for the rest of it, notice how the content was left alone, and the only thing being applied is an intrasocial pressure to not discuss these topics.
