(Just so this doesn't get lost in the CT thread)
Who all is seriously interested?
Roughly when?
For how long?
Roughly what kinda budget?
etc.
-
I'm seriously interested.
I'd be open to any time next year, based on when other people can also go.
I'd take a week off work - wouldn't necessarily have to spend it all there.
As for budget...I'd spend enough to have a good time, but not really be out to blow a ton of money either.
-
Same here. And if I do have a boat I can sail down, it would have to be like late December - mid Feb.

Me
January 2011 December 2010
1 week minimum, 2 week maximum
$600 a week (excluding flight but including rooms)
Is it unreasonable to assume the same level of expense in Antigua as I find in Panama? Yes, it is unreasonable.
-
A few thoughts on roughly when:
January:
-lotta people are still around from xmas/new years so lots of partying to do
-nicest weather of the year, warm and sunny but with a beautiful breeze
-still tourist season so everything's open
-but that means hotels and stuff aren't doing any cheap deals... more on that later
February:
-weather's still gorgeous
-my birthday at the end of the month w00t!
-super bowl at the beginning of the month w000t!
-still tourist season
March:
-weather's heating up a bit but still a nice breeze
-still tourist season, and gearing up for sailing week, so lots more yachties and parties in the yachtie area
April:
-weather's getting pretty warm, but the water is clearer for snorkelling etc
-sailing week at the end of the month, which is basically a three-week-long party (there's some sailing somewhere in there too, I guess)
-because it's sailing week, hotels etc are booked up way in advance and go for premium rates
May:
-weather's heating up pretty nicely, still a decent breeze
-sailing week over, tourist season is done, restaurants and stuff start closing for the summer (those that close, anyway)
-cheaper accomodation rates start
June:
-hot
-water is beautiful, warm, clear, and calm
-hurricane season starts
-island's kinda dead
-my own vacation tends to start sometime in mid to late June
July:
-really hot
-water stays gorgeous
-people start coming back for summer, partying ensues
-I tend to be away for some of the month (although if we plan far enough in advance, I can always rearrange that if June or July worked particularly well for people)
-hurricane season
August:
-even hotter. breeze starts dying
-everyone's back for summer, lotta partying going on. bars are full every night of the week
-hurricane season
September:
-hottest. no breeze (late August to mid-to-late September is the hottest time of the year)
-everyone's left again, this place is truly a ghost town
-peak of hurricane season
October:
-breeze starts coming back. thank fuck. october starts out pretty warm and ends up gorgeous
-places that closed for summer start opening back up
-cheaper rates may still be had
-still hurricane season, but feels safer than September
November:
-lovely weather. days are pretty nice and nights are beautiful
-hurricane season is over!
-island's back in full swing
December:
-best weather of the year
-probably my favourite time of the year here, actually
-from mid December onwards, everyone comes back to the island for xmas/new years, so the partying is great
-
$600 a week is a heavy party in Panama (excluding flight but including rooms)
Is it unreasonable to assume the same level of expense in Antigua?
Unfortunately, yes.
-
So early December would work for me too.
-

Unfortunately, yes.
Okay then - please reset my expectations to an appropriate amount per week (mins and maxes work well in this kind of conversation).
-
I wonder if Steve could fly me out there?
-
Well so far it sounds like it's going to be a sausage fest. I'm out.
-
The best deals that come up on expedia for hotels are in the 100-200 dollar range, so you'd have to figure at least $600 for lodging for one week.
So maybe $1,000 minimum?
-
Have y'all never heard of TENTS??? With bedrooms, and screened rooms, for LESS THAN ONE NIGHT's stay in a crappy motel???
EDIT: And an inflatable mattress that i can guarantee won't cost more than about $90, for the Queen-sized Bumper Pad (it's as tall as a reg mat), and less than $40 for the twin.
Don't y'all CAMP OUT??? A MILLION things to cook, in ways you've never imagined, but taste delights, nonetheless!
Man, sometimes less is MOAR! And when you're depending on booze, pot, coffee, and other stuff for entertainment,
it's amazing how entertaining it is to get to know someone, what their life is like, really like, you know?
Especially sitting around a campfire with some dumbass trying to play some rap or punk shit on an accoustic guitar! rofl[/size]
p.s. The tents, mattresses, etc., can be shipped for purchase delivery to Si, so that you don't have to worry about that.
i would also suggest at least two port-a-pots ~ men can use a pee bottle, but women need a larger "target," as it were!
-
We camp out at the river when we party there. I camp out at SCA events, sometimes for as long as two weeks. I camp when I'm hiking, but the most I've done that so far is ten days. I camp enough.

For me, it's the paranoia of unhygienic cleaning of the rooms, and just the fun factor of living outside, sort of!
i know a TON of recipes for camping ~ between actual camping and living in a flippin' sleeper, i got some good cooking down, pat!
And i bought the mattress to be able to stay with my mom, 24/7, and it was plenty comfortable, and it blows itself up AND down!
i've never had a tent with the screen room in the front, and the bedroom in the back, and i think it would be SO COOL!!!
ESPECIALLY on Antigua!!!
"i went to Antigua, and spent approximately $15/day on EVERYTHING i did!"
STEAL THIS BOOK!

Who all is seriously interested? - In visiting Antigua? Fuck yeah I am.
Roughly when? - Anytime!
For how long? - I'll stay there as long as needed
Roughly what kinda budget? - My budget is: You have to pay for almost all my shit.
Hmmm.....that last one is a dealbreaker, isn't it?

Count me in on that, Dylan!
BUT,
if the winning Lottery Ticket blows up, into my yard,
WE ARE ALL GOING!!! lol
Hope y'all are "into" camping...
rofl
Zoomie can stay with Si, or, if Si wants to come with us, kick back and look up fatties on Si's computer! (leaving a TRAIL that ANY woman Si may scarf-up on, and bring home, is SURE to find...)

Baby if I go, you can keep my berth warm for me until we get to the Caribe.
-
As in your afterberth?
-
Baby if I go, you can keep my berth warm for me until we get to the Caribe.
Some of the best times of my life were spent on the open ocean, and i'd gladly float everywhere i went!
-
Sailing to the leewards 300 miles off the east coast in December is not particularly my idea of a great time. You don't really get warm or dry until that last SSW turn off Savannah.
-
But in all seriousness I will need a crew. So volunteers for a month or so in warm weather will be accepted. The record, last time I checked, was Newport, RI to Bermuda in 3 days 6 hours. So including a run down the bay, a loop offshore to catch a trade, maybe 5 of that will be travel. And we can hang for a few days in Ft Myers and Canaveral on the way back.
-
Have y'all never heard of TENTS??? With bedrooms, and screened rooms, for LESS THAN ONE NIGHT's stay in a crappy motel???
For reference:
Depending on what time of year it is, tents set up in my yard could be an option, but honestly it's usually pretty fucking hot sleeping in a tent in the Caribbean.
Second time I've said this: try not to get involved in something where your input is not needed.
-

GA-zillionth time i've said THIS:
PUMP OFF.
Don't like it?
Don't frickin' read it.
And perhaps i should become the Queen of making others STFU, when Their Input is nothing but negative drivel...
If y'all go in December, the weather will be glorious ~ even Si says so.
AND the partying will be hearty!
NOW, perhaps someone should ask about the camping in the yard, or where the nearest, convenient place might be.
Well, if they'd like to camp. Oh. Y'all are "into" VILLAS and such?
Cripes. You're a lot better off than me, but i'll bet i have JUST as much fun, on 1/20 your budget! Pffft!
-
Where does your input fall on the spectrum?
After all, you've already defended me for being cool, and then said that we should go camping in the carribbean.
Where will the madness end??
i'm not real sure it ever does, to tell you the truth...
You ARE cool; but that doesn't mean i can't think you're a fuktard about certain things, and, pal?
You're a fuktard about this! rofl
-
This thread is for talking about going to Antigua, not throwing Hissy Fits.
-
NO!
Okay, well,
<STFU'ing
-
If we are going to Antigua in December of 2010, count me in. I will go and I will be renting a villa not sleeping on the beach. I have a fear of the homeless and rape.
-
Dollars are not an issue for me, time is. Thing is, December 2010 might just be perfect, I be planning on taking my Long Service Leave about then.
And before one of you geniuses pipes up and accuses me of being rich, I aint. I just look after my income carefully.
-
It would be so much easier to hate Fyrenza if she wasn't so god damned nice. Knock that shit off!
-
12/10 is perfect for me. money is not an issue when it comes to not camping out. been wanting to see antigua for nearly ten years. i'm sure some sally will harsh my mellow on this one, but who invited fyrenza or her "camp recipes" anyway? respectfully, please go play in the hf designated threads. much appreciated.
-
So when are we gonna get a pic or vid of you getting a massive money shot sprayed on your face, hip?
-
probably around the time you get a job and a place of your own. promise.
-
I can totally make that happen if you promise to come through with said pornographic media.
-
who doesn't love a good cumshot on a pretty face? you betcha!
-
And there's fewer prettier than Dylan's to land a gob of spaff on.
-
I'll happily take a squirt to the face if it's a female doing said squirting.
-
How did a perfectly nice Antigua thread get mixed up with a boy like Dylan?
-
First, my answers...
- Who all is seriously interested? I'm in 100%, as long as the date is set 3-4 months in advance so I can line up vacation it's good.
- Roughly when? any time after March 2010 I can make it. Will synch with Ian if he's in.
- For how long? If I'm suffering that much jet-lag I want two weeks, but I can do part of that on my own someplace if it's too long.
- Roughly what kinda budget? What Ian said. I like to save on flights/hotels and spend on experiences and food. But I need good sleep to function. As long as I don't have to share a room with a snorer I'm cool with a cheap-ass hotel if it's clean. Not really interested in going to the opposite side of the world to sleep in a tent - partly because it'll make the jet-lag that much shittier.
Si - why don't you ghost an itinerary and cost it for us, because we have no idea. Assume we'll all bring in the maximum amount of booze and plan say half of the meals as home cooked (BBQ's and relaxing somewhere can be more fun than just eating out a lot), but apart from that go nuts. I'm interested in chartering a boat from a local who owes you favors for whisky and spending a day doing bombs off starboard... I mean fishing. How much would it cost to rent a car and a house for a week?
I just looked on Flights.com and it's $1500 round-trip for me! That's amazing and you and Amy have no excuse for not coming here now
-
I'd be into learning to sail and sailing down.
-
* Who all is seriously interested? Detroit and I are
* Roughly when? bound to either Dec. 26th - Jan. 1, Spring Break (either a week in march or april - could sync with Nick and Ian once I get my schedule, which I will get in a few days) and The summer. Do not want to do the summer. Either way, we couldnt do March 2010, we could do March 2011.
* For how long? 1 week.
* Roughly what kinda budget? Our budget isnt huge and depends on our tax returns, which will look better in 2011. Like Nick and Ian, I like to save on flights/hotels and spend on experiences and food. But I need good sleep to function. Detroit and I would like a separate room but could share to save $$. I do not snore and when he does I hit him and its over. I like cheap-ass hotels if it's clean and safe (had a break in while in prague I did not enjoy)
-
The best deals that come up on expedia for hotels are in the 100-200 dollar range, so you'd have to figure at least $600 for lodging for one week.
So maybe $1,000 minimum?
Off the top of my head, that sounds about right.
The tents, mattresses, etc., can be shipped for purchase delivery to Si, so that you don't have to worry about that.
No they can't. Anything being shipped in here is subject to import duty, which includes duty on the method of shipment. You end up buying the item twice.
-
So what he's saying is that it's expensive there. The cheapest way to get there is on the wind and the cheapest place to stay is my boat.
I'mma get some sexin' outta this yet...
-
SO Dylan IS going.
-
"i went to Antigua, and spent approximately $15/day on EVERYTHING i did!"
Sorry, not possible. Antigua is going to seem expensive to anyone coming from the US. Doesn't mean we can't have a fucking blast on a somewhat limited budget, but there's pretty much nothing cheap about this place.
(leaving a TRAIL that ANY woman Si may scarf-up on, and bring home, is SURE to find...)
Oh no! All the women I bring home will find the trail! :(
If y'all go in December, the weather will be glorious ~ even Si says so.
Yes. Very much beach weather, with a nice breeze and relatively cool nights. But at no point is it ever sweater weather here, regardless of what time of day or night it is. And this is the tropics, mosquitos are an issue. Why am I still debating this issue?
probably around the time you get a job and a place of your own. promise.
ZING!
If I'm suffering that much jet-lag I want two weeks, but I can do part of that on my own someplace if it's too long.
Good call. If you were doing both weeks in Antigua, you might want to try staying in a couple of different places. We can sort this out, no prob.
Si - why don't you ghost an itinerary and cost it for us, because we have no idea.
Will do. I'm gonna start researching stuff today. I'm assuming our best bet would be either villas near each other or rooms in a single hotel, for ease of moving as a group. If we do end up with a hotel, I'll probably grab a room there for a couple of nights as well.
Assume we'll all bring in the maximum amount of booze
Booze is about the only cheap thing here. That and smokes. Any cigarette smokers (are there?) are advised not to bring more than the bare minimum they need while travelling, cuz cigs here WILL be cheaper than they can get them where they live.
plan say half of the meals as home cooked (BBQ's and relaxing somewhere can be more fun than just eating out a lot)
Absolutely. It's pretty much always BBQ weather here, and there are some fairly inexpensive restaurants we can go to. A villa with a proper kitchen may be something we want to look into if we wanna save some money by cooking a bit.
I'm interested in chartering a boat from a local who owes you favors for whisky and spending a day doing bombs off starboard... I mean fishing.
I actually have several friends with boats, providing lunch and a cooler full of booze is probably all that we'd need to convince someone to take us out boating. We could zip over to Green Island! (http://www.geographia.com/antiguanews/messages/153/3066.jpg)
-

Absolutely. It's pretty much always BBQ weather here, and there are some fairly inexpensive restaurants we can go to.
Before Krsna comes in here and shits a brick, are you talking about TRUE BBQing, or just grilling?
-
Nah, just grilling!
-
I am interested in this. Dec. 2010 would be ok for me. preferably not the week before or after Xmas though. a week long visit would be ideal. hopefully around $2000 for flight & lodging & food/ drink, etc....
However, I get seasick, so I'm not sure if boating is something I could really do for extended periods of time... if boating is going to be a large part of this week I might count myself out.
-
i, too, would prefer early December as opposed to the holiday portion of the month. couldn't do that.
-
I'm good with early Dec.
-
if boating is going to be a large part of this week
It's not, don't worry.
-
i, too, would prefer early December as opposed to the holiday portion of the month. couldn't do that.
-
I'm interested in sailing down if it's a viable option. How long would this take?
-
Well, according to my research it's about 5 days to Bermuda, then another 5-7 to Antigua. That's averaging 8 knots all the way. A racing hull would shave 2 days off each leg. But since I'm working up to a 30+ foot center cockpit, the chances of my getting a racing hull aren't good. The Oday I'm looking at now is $12.5K. I'm going to wait until the maritime industry hits bottom and try to get one even cheaper.
-
that sounds like a "quit the job" kind of trip for me. Not that I'm adverse to that, but my wife might be. I'll have to let you know closer to the time
-
Yeah it's for people like me with nothing else going on. I can afford a month or two, especially if I can bootleg some charters to the Bahamas or BVI while I'm there.
-
A full month. Hmm. I could save up that much vacation time between now and then...it's a matter of whether I would be allowed to take that much in one go.
Editted to add:
An even better idea occurred to me while I was in the shower. Depending on how many people were interested in being Aaron's crew and how many of us he needed, some of us could do the trip down and the others could do the trip back.
-
I would of left out the bit about you thinking of Aaron while you were in the shower.
-
Stay out of this, you.
-
I would of left out the bit about you thinking of Aaron while you were in the shower.
it's where the best ideas happen!

Been poking around some hotel websites and remembered this place:
http://www.caribbean-resort-antigua-hotel-siboney-beach.com/default.htm (http://www.caribbean-resort-antigua-hotel-siboney-beach.com/default.htm)
It's an option. It's 5 mins drive from where I live, the rooms are pretty nice, the hotel itself is in a pretty spot, right on a good (if a little crowded) beach, a short stroll away from some good bars and restaurants and shit. And their "summer" season goes until December 19th, double-occupancy rooms start at US$150 a night, which ain't bad.
-
Here's a pic of the beach at Siboney:

there are some extremely sexy choices there. check out the cottages @ casa lidia!

http://www.dickensonbaycottages.com/ (http://www.dickensonbaycottages.com/)
This is about the same price and same kinda area as Siboney, but with kitchenettes.
And go Lucas! I'm less likely to be personally acquainted with villas around here, so research away and I can always go check places out in person. If we get a good crowd committed to coming down, a big villa shared between everyone might be the best and most cost-effective option. Then we just need cameras and not let anyone leave and we can film Big Brother: L-G Edition.
-
...so research away and I can always go check places out in person.
you're a good man.
-
I'm in. I will let Luke plan everything for me and go along, as usual.
-
Damnit, I would be completely down for crewing for Zoomie and camping on the beach... but I'm probably not going to be around.
Going to a tropical island to sleep indoors is for squares.
-
If you crewed for Zoomie you could probably just sleep on deck. That's the best kind of outdoors sleep. You anchor far enough off shore so mosquitos aren't a factor, roll something up for a pillow, and go to sleep staring at that cloudless, starry sky. Man, I need to do that again sometime soon.
-
Dude, please. You string a hammock between the mast and headstay. While I sleep in the aft cabin in air conditioned comfort.
-
Square.
-
Air conditioning is terrible.

Move to Austin, live without AC, and then we will talk.

I'm old, and a delicate flower.

I love having A/C. It's expensive, but so worth it.

Move to Asia, live without AC, and then we will talk.
Done that too.
-
I very much like the idea of everyone renting a villa. and if having my own room wasn't an option (which i would prefer), i would be down to room with brook (even though we haven't discussed it yet) or anyone else who promises not to murder me in my sleep.
-
Murder? No. Not murder. I'd offer to violently rape you but you'd want to buy me a drink after.
And of course you can't rape the willing...
-
Yeah hip I'll room with you (assuming that I end up going...)
Maybe Carolyn wants to get in on this trip. I'll ask her when I see her.
-
THREESOME
-
In your case it will be a pulled pork sammich.
-
Ooooo, that sounds really fucking good. With BBQ sauce!
-
Move to Australia, live without AC, and then we will talk.

I dont have AC. Never have and I would prefer it if I never do.
-
I have it at home but not in my truck. And so far we've used it for one day this year.
-
I dont have AC. Never have and I would prefer it if I never do.
Trust me, you need it in Melbourne in January and February...

You forgot where I live ? The climate isnt that much different. Humidity is about the same, you get colder in winter. the end.

I have it at home but not in my truck. And so far we've used it for one day this year.
I run the A/C in my bedroom 365 days per year. And I tend to drive with the A/C on max and the front windows open.

I volunteer to share a room with C, Brook, Hip & Si's GF's two hot friends who are gonna show

I suggest nobody touch Nick's socks while on this trip.

Every year ? Ipswich always goes over 40.
They only take the temp for the news from the airport temp station....which is on the bay.

So generous you are, as I'm sure none of the other men on this board would be willing to volunteer that position.

Frankly I'd rather sleep on the beach than spend all night listening to five broads chat about their periods and scream their tits off every time they saw a palmetto bug.

When you are alone you don't, maybe. I've seen what women turn into when they reach critical density.

That'd more likely be me. Cockroaches freak me the fuck out. I willingly surrender any claim of being any kind of a badass to anyone willing to dispatch of a roach for me.

Dead cockroaches scare me. Live ones just run away and I don't have to think of them again.

They don't have CL in Antigua. I'm out.

Good one Nick. You have some pretty good one liners lately!
I may just have to put you up there in the "hot + awesome" catagory.

Hot? Nah, Fuckable? Maybe
