Title: Moustaches
Post by: Doormouse on November 01, 2009, 03:43:25 PM
Gentlemen,
It's time we discussed our facial hair.
What kind of moustaches, beards, and combinations have you tried before? How does you facial hair look right now? Favorite facial-hair products? Grooming tips?

I have worn several styles in the past, but to put them in the order of most common usage for me we get:
1 - Federation Standard (mainly only because I was a kid for so much of my life...)
2 - Petit Goatee (while I waited for the sides to fill in...)
3 - Goatee (my normal face)
4 - Van Dyke (my current face)
5 - Handlebar (I did this for a year just for kicks)
6 - Hollywoodian (I did this for a year as I let myself go after undergrad. I also grew my hair long.)
7&8 - Handlebar and Goatee, and Copstash Standard (Somewhat rare for me. I do this when I'm feeling adventurous)
9&10 - Fu Manchu, The Zappa (My most common "I'm screwing around. Look at me!" face)
11 - Soul Patch (Only for less than a day. I do this whenever I go from anything beardy to the Federation Standard)

I rock the Old Dutch pretty well, and do it often (just shave my face).  The only other purposeful facial hair grooming I did in the past was grow a really long and pointy goatee last year.  I eventually got sick of it after it got so long that it was getting in the way of everything.

N/A for me, outside of stubble when I'm lazy or just don't care ...

I have stubble quite often. But women always seem to moan about it.

When I was 12 I grew a moustache. Until they became hijacked as a gay thing. ( wel they probably were before but anyways..)

I ALWAYS have facial hair for the most part....I hate it when it's really short or clean shaven cuz I look like an 8 years old boy.

Post by: OriginalRessotaspiksMan on November 01, 2009, 04:07:24 PM
No. Many years later fortunately.
I deluded myself that growing a moustache as a 12 yr old was  a status symbol.
As a 14 yr old  my class universally considered it a "Freddie Mercury tribute activity".

Anyway I contest the notion that moustaches (as a whole) are gay. They are, in fact, awesome.
Title: Re: Moustaches
Post by: OriginalRessotaspiksMan on November 01, 2009, 04:21:52 PM
Someone told me that in the 70s, moustaches were considered very heterosexual ( except on dykes).

I still think leather cap and cowboy chaps with one might be considered a little camp tho...
Title: Re: Moustaches
Post by: Doormouse on November 01, 2009, 04:26:52 PM
Definitely leather caps, cowboy chaps, and moustaches when used in combination are very gay.
Eric Anzalone didn't do the hetero moustache any favors.

I have a unibrow too.

I was clean-faced till about age 12 or so, when I started getting a bit of a "soul patch" (god I hate that name and hereby refuse to use it anymore). Grew that out and kept only that despite the rest of my facial hair starting to grow more and more till I was about 18, at which point I thought I'd escaped my dad's insane facial hair gene. I was wrong.

By the time I was 19 I was a hairy fucker, but shaved once a week or so, just leaving the aforementioned unmentionable. Not that I'd shave once a week and still look pretty clean shaven for more than a day, mind you. I'm just lazy about it. I grew a mustache as well at one point, but that lasted less than a week cuz I looked sleazy as fuck.

Age 20 I decided to try growing a goatee, and I've only ever shaved it off completely once* since. I still only shave about once a week, and not even with a razor anymore. I use a pair of edging clippers that just take my stubble down really low.

I always have some one of the following: van dyke, goatee, ducktail/van dyke, ducktail/goatee, klingon/goatee, anchor/goatee, not-quite-so-petit goatee.

*I do NOT recommend this.

Yeah I didn't get into mixing these terms, but in truth my face currently is closest to a short boxed van dyke.

I've done hollywoodian, sparrow, & van dyke at various times.

I've done sparrow but only while I saw a dude dressed as him at for pirate parties.
Fixed ...

I have a uni brow too, they should've been mentioned.

You've got a 'stache, sidburns, and a unibrow?
Your mom fuck Sasquatch or something?

My evolution of facial hair has gone from the Federation Standard, to the Petit Goatee, to the Goatee, to the current Van Dyke. I'd really like to go with the Winnfield, but I can't grow the sideburns.

I gave the short boxed beard a shot, but alas, other than on my chin and stache area my facial hair is just too sparse to pull off the full beard.

Exactly. My sideburns are a joke.

I cant grow enough facial hair have a moustache without looking like pedophilic serial killer, or John Major.
Title: Re: Moustaches
Post by: FAH-Q on November 02, 2009, 12:55:08 PM
I have fairly prominent sideburns. I've never managed to (or had much desire to, I guess) make it through the really itchy period, so I've never grown out a full on Grizzly Adams, but I probably could if I felt like it. I don't have many sparse areas on my face.

Same age, he's had a beard since he was at least 13, probably longer. 13 is just when I know he definitely had one.
His nickname is also sandwich. It's a sign!

I have trimmed my beard a little shorter since then (for the summer) and I think soon I shall have my hair cut off really short for a while too. In anticipation of the application of medicated crap for a while. It's all frazzled anyway and isn't going to grow any longer unless I cut it off first.

Man, I really like burning money when I'm drunk.  The last few times I've been drunk and around a fire pit, I've built absurdly large fires and burnt everything I could get my hands on, including the contents of my wallet.
