Title: Japan Threads
Post by: taiko on April 27, 2009, 11:34:50 PM
Ok, I'll look at the flights; I also have my friend Robin looking in on things; she works for some airline ...
How serious are you about this, Thrash?
Because you've really backed out of a lot of shit since I've known you.
Hell, you were supposed to call me back the other day, and you never did!

So, honestly, give us a percentage of how likely you are to actually go to Japan in November.
Title: Eitje travelling to Japan updates
Post by: taiko on April 27, 2009, 11:38:30 PM
Because of my work, travelling to Japan on the first week of November might be difficult.  I'm going to do what I can to swing it, but I'll keep everyone up-to-date in this thread.

Right now, I'm about 80% 98% sure I'll be able to make it, because I got a new job.  No projects are slated to launch in that first week, and I should have enough visibility to be able to keep things out of that week if possible.

Separate from your plane tickets. It seems Trix got a great deal on hers...

You will need to allow for the following things:

All in all about JPY80,000 - JPY100,000 should be plenty, and you can probably save money off that.

Post by: bagman on April 29, 2009, 04:15:29 AM
It's definitely not cheap.

I took out 40,000 yen (not counting a few times I did use my credit card for purchases), and my folks gave me another 25,000. I blew through all of that in about 7 days, leaving me not more than 1500 yen the last night I was there. Another story for later, but I was basically a retard. I was being fairly frugal too for the most part. No uber-fancy dinners, not buying any expensive ass electronics, basically nothing from Ginza.

I would take Nick's advice, on the 80,000 - 100,000 estimates.

Title: Re: Budgets
Post by: tricky on April 29, 2009, 04:55:29 PM
Not sure if this link will work or not but here you go:

http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/apps/booking/flight/searchResult2.aspx?SID=9DE753ED45D84927BC0C55E2C1903E52&sg=1&sgk=256510/31/2009|910/31/2009 (http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/apps/booking/flight/searchResult2.aspx?SID=9DE753ED45D84927BC0C55E2C1903E52&sg=1&sgk=256510/31/2009|910/31/2009)

you have to select which return you want, depending on how long of a layover you prefer...

i think you have to do the search yourself. just go to continental.com and enter in JAX - NRT, 10/31 - 11/7. Select the outgoing flight to have a layover in NJ. Make sure the flight from EWR to NRT is flight #9 (the flight Luke and I are on).

depending on your returning flight you can have a layover in TX or NJ. obviously i'm returning straight to NJ and Luke is taking the one going back to TX.

That was the figure we talked about on Skype at the start mate.... You may be able to get cheaper tickets like Tricks did.

I would advise to make the most of the opportunity to try all the different kinds of foods and stuff while you're here, everyone. Traveling on the very cheap makes sense if you're backpacking around Europe, but we're jetting around Japan on bullet trains for 6 days so my mandate is to cram as much experience into that time as possible. Please don't be alarmed if it looks like you're spending more "per-day" than you would on a normal holiday. If you were here for 2 weeks or a month or something then it would be different.

I've usually found Japan to be very reasonably priced... yes you can spend ridiculous amounts of money on stuff, but you dont need to.

Last visit to Hokkaido, we got a big bowl of Ramen for lunch, I think it was about Y600 ($6)... I swear to god, I really didnt need to eat that evening.

Can you please make sure Kyle and Luke sign in and confirm this? If people want to use CC points to pay for whatever I need to know pretty damn soon.

As for the itinerary, it'll probably change and peeps can jet off on side-trips so don't stress if something you want to do isn't on there.

Cheers...

Attending:
Nick
Ian
Dani
Brook
Kyle
Luke

Buy before you leave:
JR Rail Pass. Not having this will bleed your wallet. I know, because I've already worked out my own transport costs for the week.

Arrival & Departure:
Everyone arrives on Sat November 1 and deaprts on Sat November 8 from Narita Airport

Hotels (Tokyo 5,000JPY each per night for share):
Ian + Dani
Brook + Luke
Sasha + Kyle

OR

Ian + Dani
Brook + Sasha
Luke + Kyle

OR

Ian + Dani
Brook + Sasha
Luke
Kyle

Hotels (Hiroshima/Nara 4,000 each per night):
Some variant of the above with Nick in the mix. I'll start looking at what is available. If there's a cheap & decent hostel or something we may all wind up in that.

Itinerary:
The below is the general itinerary, this may change a little but probably not by much.

31 Oct (Sat) - People arrive in groups. Call Nick when you arrive. Everyone except Brook and Dani should rent a cellphone at Narita. You all have JR Rail passes so get the JR Limited Express into Tokyo Station and catch the Yamanote to Tamachi, Nick will take you to the hotel. Groups who arrive early go to Akihabara because it's interesting on a Weekend. Group dinner somewhere

1 Nov (Sun) - Tokyo Sightseeing. All the designer shops will be open. Hot tourist spots at Akihabara, Harajuku, Shibuya, Asakusa, Shinagawa Aquarium, wherever... People can go where they want because you all have cellphones. Dinner will be at a large Izakaya.

2 Nov (Mon) - Red-eye shinkansen at 7am -> Nara. Temple Hopping, drinks, dinner, onsen, Karaoke party party party... stay in Nara area.

3 Nov (Tues) - Nara -> Hiroshima. Arrive lunchtime. Go to War memorial. Dinner is Okonomiyaki and check out Hiroshima in the evening. I'll look up a cool area, but I've never been so if anyone wants to research please go ahead.

4 Nov (Wed) - Full day in Hiroshima. I haven't researched this but there will be lots to see and do with the peace parks, maybe a cool shrine, shopping etc. Picnic lunch or something. Shinkansen back to Tokyo mid afternoon. Check into hotels and dinner somewhere in Tokyo. If anyone wants to spend a night in Kyoto this is the one as Kyoto is on the way back to Tokyo. I need to know in advance to help book your accomodation for this so let me know.

5 Nov (Thu) - No real plans. Shopping, sightseeing around town somewhere. Does anyone want to go to Yasukuni shrine and upset the Chinese? Sex shops fun. In the evening go to Shibuya to have a beer at my friend Michiko's bar.

6 Nov (Fri) - If people want to go traditional then a day trip to Kamakura to the giant Bhudda (Kyle, Ian and Danni have been however...). If people want to stay in Tokyo and do crazy things then Harajuku/Shibuya/Meiji Shrine. Rent mine and Ian's friend Yusuke's restaurant for an epic last evening. Karaoke and Roppongi.

7 Nov (Sat) - recover, lunch, bye bye...

Extra items that could be put in:
a) Suicide forest... probably just a forest.
b) Miyajima - look it up on wikipedia, we could visit it while in Hiroshima
c) A night in Kyoto coming back from Hiroshima
d) I haven't planned anything to do with Music because I figure everyone is into different things and shows are expensive.

Will do...

I spoke to Lucas the other night (he called me @ 1am... luckily I had not yet gone to bed)... will talk with him this weekend.

I'll check out prices for Gracery hotel tonight and post what I find. Nick, can you suggest other places? even Love Hotels.

I'll be buying JR passes next week... so this will be done.

As I think I'll be the first arrival at Narita, I can hang around for the rest to arrive. I have to hang there anyway to collect Danni.
Title: Re: Final Plan
Post by: underclass on August 06, 2009, 02:25:54 AM
Ok - I'll check other hotels but I don't think you're going to go much cheaper. You may save $5 or $10 per night by being further out, but with this many people I really think we should be within 1 km of each other. Plus I'm planning the dinner events at good places I know around my area, and taxi's home are expensive if/when we run late.

I do need an idea of who will share with whom though...
Title: Re: Final Plan
Post by: mosh on August 06, 2009, 03:55:45 AM
I already booked a room at the Gracery for Y10000 a night... roughly US$100...  twin rooms can be booked.

If we all get phones, it doesnt matter where we all stay.

just for info, heres the website http://www.gracery.com/en/tamachi/index.html (http://www.gracery.com/en/tamachi/index.html)

sorry, my weekend was packed with enforced non-relaxing. i always respond to you eventually, don't i??

brook and i will room together in tokyo.  we'll also stay at the same place as mosh while in tokyo.

with that in mind, i'd also like guidance on where to book in hiroshima; nick, you can stay w/ brook and me, if you don't mind cotting it up on the floor.  otherwise, i did say you could room w/ me in hiroshima, nick, which probably puts brook in a room with sasha (or by herself).

so, hotelling in hiro has some holes in it, but tokyo is planned!

things i will buy this weekend: train pass, matching plane tickets with brook (including initial flight into newark), reservations for tokyo hotel based on above list of planned actions.
purchases pending more info:  hiroshima hotel reservations.

let me know if you need further info from me; i'll check back in a few days, or you can pass me an encrypted message through my communication network...  ;)

Hotels in other cities will be for 2 nights. Total cost of $50 per-night maximum. Can I go ahead and just book these and get money off ya'll when you arrive if I have to pay in advance?

I recommend booking at the hotel Ian mentioned for your nights in Tamachi as soon as you have tickets. I guess Ian booked online?

Post by: taiko on August 12, 2009, 07:45:46 AM
okay, on the one hand i trust you because i've known you for years.

but on the other hand, i'd rather have a little more control over where and what i'll be doing when i travel.

just letting you know, i'm uncomfortable with the "pay me later" style, but if you think it's the best way to go, then that's fine.

WITH THAT SAID:  i only need to worry about booking one room for brook & me while we're in the tokyo metropolitan area.  is that a correct statement?

You'll need to book twice, once for 1st & 2nd November  & again for 5 & 6th November...

And the Hotel Gracery only takes online bookings... pay when you arrive

I agree, but this is really just a self-reliance thing.  I prefer to be able to make it on my own, in case something tragic happens.  And, to do that, I'll want my own reservations.  :)

I was PLANNING on staying in a room with Brook.  Sorry guys but if you aren't my boyfriend I don't trust you, even if I have known you for years and years.  If Brook does not want to stay with me I will stay in one of those single woman rooms.  If the hotels we are staying at don't have one of those then I will just stay by myself, which I do not mind at all.  Since Luke and Brook are doing it, I bet that's why they want to stay together anyway.  I wanted to go to Kyoto but I am not going to go by myself so if no one wants to go then I don't think I will want to go since I can't track down my friend Kana who lives there.  I fly out the 7th at 7:05pm btw not the 8th.  Can Luke please let me know how much the train tix are and where to get them????? I will call Luke tomorrow regardless.  I know that we don't have a show worked into the schedule but I would like to go to some crazy fun club, please!

Sasha:

1: JR rail pass can be bought here:
JALPAK (JTB GLOBAL TRAVEL INC.) Houston Office 4900 Woodway Dr., Suite 510, Houston , TX 77056 TEL +1 800 776 5575
FAX +1 713 658 1932
It'll cost you about $300, seems like a lot up front, but you'll get more than that in rail travel.

2: Hotel. Gracery has single ladies rooms I think. If not, there's probably somewhere nearby that does.

3. Kyoto is on the way, maybe Kyle would stop there with you. It is definitely worth it.

4. I agree that a club should be visited...

It's completely nonsense, but I cannot book online a flight which goes AUS -> EWR -> NRT -> AUS.

I can book two trips - one for AUS <-> EWR and one for EWR <-> NRT.  That costs about $1200 ($400+$800).

I can also book AUS -> EWR -> NRT -> IAH -> AUS, but that costs FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS.

So, Brook, can I stay at your place Saturday night, when we get back from Japan?

(Also, I'll be calling Continental to see if I can book the first flight desc over the phone for a reasonable cost.  If not, whatever.)

FINAL evaluation for my eyes and being cleared of all complications on THURSDAY ...
I'm told this is going to be the last one and if all's the same, and the injection doesn't cause problems, I'll be 100% cleared for a long flight and can make my arrangements ...

Sorry, it's been a long issue with my PRK/Lasik ...
(I had unusually thick retnas, and, as a result, I needed a PRK shaving of them, and then traditional lasik; as a result, my "flap" was weaker then most and, although they anticipated at least one infection, I got none, but the flap took a while to take and heal properly; it's supposedly over the past month been healing as normal, and my doctors know my plans and have been working hard to help me make it happen.  I was supposed to be cleared last month, however, they saw a "spot" and needed to make sure it's all good, and it seems to be, so we should be good.  I WILL NOT compromise my eyesight, obviously, but we'll do what we have to do.  I'm thinking it'll be fine, sorry for the delays, I just didn't know anything positive until recently, and they really think it's "all clear" at this point.)

Thanks for your concern, and thanks for your patience ...

Can I make the following suggestion since Brook and Sasha seem to be on the tightest budget here and Kyle wants his own room?

Brook and Sasha share. Lucas solo, Kyle solo.
If Dave's eyeball is small enough to get on a plane then He can share with Sasha and Brook can share with Luke.

OK?

Right, so, to follow-up...

I have a room @ Gracery with two twin beds reserved for the nights of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th.

If the girls are okay with it, I'm okay with sharing a room with both of them.  But, like Brook says, this will probably end up with someone on the floor, since I don't think the twin beds are big enough to host two people (especially not if one of them is me).

However, the 3rd & 4th I'm still rooming with Nick.  note:  this does not preclude other people also staying with us, it's just that I promised Nick that he could stay in whatever room we got for the nights of the 3rd & the 4th.

Converse!

Solid -

Kyle has done this before, so I think the bunch arriving at 14:xx can all get cells and jump on the train with him. It's pretty simple: inside Narita airport there is a JR train station. Show your pass at the ticket window and ask for a "Limited Express to Tokyo". Get on train. It's all in English. You'll have cells and I'll make sure you have my number. Ian and I will meet you at Tokyo station and take you to the hotel.

Nick and I just thought it didn't make a helluva lot of sense making anybody sleep on a floor, any of the nights. We're not attending boot camp, yo. Also, nobody is sharing a bed with me. That's why it's called a "twin" room. Two beds. Miles apart.

I'd prefer to have my own room as I said, but told Nick I would be willing to get a twin the last portion of the trip when we're back in Tamachi, so somebody doesn't have to sleep on the ground.

But if the floor is your favorite place, that's cool too.

Fuck no I am not sleeping on the floor.  I'm not that poor.  Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but I have to sleep sometime y'know?  Tomorrow I am going in to school to get set up for my part-time job.  I will be getting an extra $190/week from it so I will be able to afford a hotel in the middle of September, along with train ticket and whatever else.  I just moved and my roommate is a mooch so I am broke until I can work my new 59 hour a week work schedule.  I also just dealt with a horrible sexual harassment suit at work that involved me as the victim, so I am considering quitting my job since I don't feel safe here in the middle of the night.  I don't have money lying around like the rest of you boys do, so chill out or just front me everything and I can pay you over the course of the next two months.  I just HATE when people are trying to get me to do things NOW NOW NOW, I just tune them all out, so consider yourselves all tuned out until I have money to throw at your wishes.  OUT

So once again I ask WHERE DO YOU PEOPLE WANT ME TO SLEEP? I said that I was staying with Luke and then you all requested that I stay with Sasha instead. I said I would and now I am not getting a straight answer. And I don't want to wait until the last minute to make my plans and I don't want to depend on others for getting my sleeping situations sorted at the very last minute. And also I'm not a boy. And also I don't have money laying around.

Now once again I am going back to, Luke can I stay with you in Tokyo?

Sorry, I am not sure what the hotel is that we are staying in on the 3rd & 4th. What is it? And can I assume that I can go ahead and book my own room for these days?

Nick's falling through on answering this question for us.

I just HATE when people are trying to get me to do things NOW NOW NOW, I just tune them all out, so consider yourselves all tuned out ...

I'm in the same boat at this point.  I'm set for rooms for most nights, tricky is covered while I'm in Tokyo, and we're pending work by others.  At this point, I'll stop my daily visits until someone comes up with additional information.  tricks, please let me know if this happens.  Thank you.  :)

Fuck no I am not sleeping on the floor.  I'm not that poor.

If I could shave $1000 off of this trip by sleeping on the floor of a closet, I will, I've been on tour before....

calm down all...

I'm trying to get everyone a hotel room because I don't know if they'll book out later leaving someone hanging. I don't want to be running around in late October trying to juggle open hotel rooms so I thought I'd lock down a bed for everyone in advance. That and the JR ticket are the only things you really need to think about, I'll set up the rest.

With whatever reasons you all have for only checking threads occasionally, it's been hard to pull it all together.

Oct 31 - Nov 1 (2 nights, Hotel in Tokyo - ppl book individually)
Nov 2 - Nov 3 (Hotels in Hiroshima/Nara - Nick will just book all these and collect cash in November)
Nov 4 - Nov 6 (3 nights, Hotel in Tokyo - ppl book individually)

Tokyo Hotels:
Ian + Dani
Luke + Brook (Luke to book)
Kyle + Sasha (Kyle to book)

Hiroshima Hotels:
You're all at my mercy.

Sasha, please try to get the JR Rail pass as soon as you can and don't worry about the hotels. The rail pass sometimes takes a few weeks to get delivered.

I suggest a phone each. Imagine being in a crowd of 5,000 people in Times square, all talking to you in gobble-de-gook. That's what it will feel like if you get lost here and it's incredibly cheap.

No. I was just annoyed that people were asking me to do one thing, and then I agreed, and then they made a bunch of vague statements and I was all WTF.

Honestly, I have a lot of stuff going on right now and didn't want to wait until the last minute to make these plans and have one more thing on my mind.

Again, I had to make plans, with yourself, Luke and Kyle all not checking in for various lengths of time. Now that you're all back, we were able to finalize things. Although I noticed HRH Luke has declared himself absent again.

Anyway, the below is hereby set in stone....

Thanks a lot Luke for pointing out that I change my mind.  That is so gracious of you.  I never noticed that I did that before.

Also, I will sleep on the floor, I don't give a shit anymore.  Since it seems that all hotels must be booked to-fucking-day, just count me in on the floor of the room or the floor of a closet.  I feel like I have the flu so if I don't die before I go I will practice sleeping on the uncomfortable floor just to please Luke.  I will lay at your feet like the dog that I am your highness.

Oh and Tricky I don't want you to stay with me. I can't stand your bitching online so I def. won't be able to stand it in person.

I am quite different in person than I here on LG (I think I am...) I imagine we will all be able to get along in person. I don't think there will be a problem there, at least I will not have a problem with getting along with you all. I might tease you guys in real life, but that's it. I actually told Luke I am looking forward to meeting you because I think you are funny!

Sorry if I annoyed people in this thread. Really I am. I just want us to be able to have a good time in Japan and get along.

Hey Nick:  Sasha was still a little concerned about how she was going to unload the 30 or so pairs of used panties that she's bringing along with her.

Do you know if any of the stores around where you live will PURCHASE the panties off of her for a good price?

Title: Hiroshima
Post by: underclass on August 30, 2009, 02:21:46 AM
I'm just working this part of the trip out in detail and want to change from -

I need to know in advance to help book your accomodation for this so let me know.

to -

2 Nov (Mon) - Red-eye shinkansen at 7am -> Hiroshima. Arrive around noon. Lunch and go check out Shukkeien Garden (http://www.japaneselifestyle.com.au/travel/hiroshima_shukkeien_garden.htm), which looks awesome. Dinner at Okonomi-mura (google it)

3 Nov (Tues) - Hiroshima -> Miyajima to see the shrine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itsukushima_Shrine). Look around and catch a train back into the city after lunch. If we've got time, then go to the Peace Park, otherwise leave it for the following morning. Ad-hoc dinner, but Hiroshima does good seafood if there are no objections. Onsen.

4 Nov (Wed) - I'll be checking out the peace-par and war museum and people are welcome to join.

- because I think throwing Nara in there as well is a lot.

Hotels:
This hostel (http://kshouse.jp/hiroshima-e/) seems really close to the main station, they probably can communicate in english and there seems to be a good options for rooms...

Is this OK? Click the "rates" tab to see what they have. I was going to book the following:
Ian + Dani: Double Enquite or a double Japanese room.
Kyle, Brook, Sasha, Lucas, Nick: Either a dorm room, or a combination of dorm room with Japanese room (futons) if the beds are shorter than Lucas and I. Dorm rooms are the cheapest option.

Please tell me if you want a room on your own.
I like the option of at least one Japanese room because we book the whole room, so people can sit up and chat without having to consider other guests.

I really like Nick's plan.  It has a great balance for the whole trip; a short of inherent beauty.

Let's make sure we're clipping a branch where it's appropriate to do so.  :D

If you're arriving on a sunday, it give people a say to adjust before the long train-ride and tramping around Hiroshima.

I think it's a good idea, especially for those arriving from the States, jetlag is not fun folks
Title: Re: Hiroshima

As for the rest of it:

1)  I don't want to stop in Kyoto.
2)  I'm okay with staying in a hostel, dorm-room style, and I don't need a bed or anything; if it's short beds, then our feet will just hang off and Kyle can laugh at us in triumph.

EDIT:  What about........

Does anyone want to go to Kyoto? I can book a night for you guys on the way back from Hiroshima? Kyoto is seriously cool and you can get your temple fix in in one place. It's also SUPER easy to get around, as they have an excellent bus-route and an all-day bus pass that goes everywhere you'll want to go. If anyone wants to do this let me know and I'll plan it for you, I've done Kyoto four times and I can put together a 1-night tour in about 10 minutes. Check it out on wikipedia and let me know.

Title: Final Check - Hotels & JR Passes
Post by: underclass on September 02, 2009, 12:41:52 AM
Wait any longer than this and you risk rooms being booked out.

As per the Hiroshima thread, the dates we will stay in Tokyo are 1-2 & 5-6 November.

Kyle/Sasha - Please book your rooms, either together or apart on those nights sometime this week. You guys don't want to be stuck catching the last train back to Shinjuku (west Tokyo) when we're all partying in Shinbashi (SE Tokyo)... FYI a cab back to where you stayed last time Kyle would be about $50-70 per trip.

Lucas - Please adjust your booking at the Gramercy as per the Hiroshima thread.

I've had no comments on the Hiroshima rooms so I'm gonna lock them in hopefully tonight.

Lastly - everyone has their JR passes (or has ordered), yes?

This would have been a good time to test the gf/fb thing.  If you told the girl your A/C was broke and asked to stay with her until it was fixed, you'd get the answer to "is this my girlfriend?" pretty quick.

only loose end is Sasha's train-pass right?   Sasha, if that looks dicey, why don't you ask Kyle to chuck it on his credit card so you know you'll get it before you're due to leave? Would be a shame for someone to miss the trip to Hiroshima.

Just FYI - my shink tickets are more than the bloody JR pass

Unfortunately it's only for travelers. The first time you use it, you need to get it stamped and they check your passport to see you're a tourist.

That reminds me, you'll need to have your passport on you the entire time for legal and travel reasons. If you haven't got one I suggest a holder for it.

Oh shit, I've had bad experiences the both times I have stayed at a hostel. Hostels are for hippies.

The last night in Costa Rica, Katie and I stayed at a hostel in San Jose and it had a shared bathroom. I got up to pee in the middle of the night and the floor was all fucking wet. Who knows if it was piss, toilet overflow, sweat, vomit, semen or what. The shower and sinks were in a completely different room. Also, there was some lady screaming almost all night long and that made for a very restful evening.

Second time I was in Vancouver, BC Canada with my mom. Shared bathroom again, but this one wasn't bad. Weird smells around though. A god damn crane started hammering into the ground over and over about 4:30am!!! AM!!!

Anyway, yeah sounds cool to me. I'll have my iPod to drown out any cranes or screaming women.

I don't know if my job is going to let me go to Japan.  I put in my request for time off a week ago and haven't heard anything back yet.  Also, my coworker said that since I am still in my 6 month probationary period she doesn't think they will let me go.  It really sucks that I will have to put in my two week notice in a month, especially after I have built up 6 days of time for this by working holidays.

My boss gave me the excuse that I will have to go on leave without pay to to cover my 8 days off for Japan as the reason why he didn't approve my time off, and through some creativity on my part I found the time and wrote him this email.....

"Charles,

I won't have to take leave with out pay in order to go to Japan, which is the reason you gave as to why I wasn't allowed to go.  I just did the numbers.  As of October 31, 2009 I will have to take 8 days off in order to go on the trip.  I will have as time available: 2 R days, 2 Holiday Comp time days, 3 sick days ( I don't have to bring a doctors note until after the third day of being sick), and 1 day of time off for doing the Nami Walk.  I am also going to get a physical so I can accrue the 8 hours/1 day of emergency leave for taking a health risk assessment .  That totals 9 days that I will have to cover the 8 days.  Seeing as how this solves the problem will you please update the October schedule in order to show that I will be off on the 31st, (since I will be on an airplane that day).

Thank goodness this was solved, it works out for everyone now!

Sasha xxx"

I hope he chokes on that, the cocksucker.

Honestly, you're looking at:
500-1000 for breakfast
500-1000 for lunch
1500-4000 for dinner & drinks, depending on where we go and what we eat.

+ hotel, trains, entrance to attractions etc.

You'll be packing some nice shoes on your way home then, I guess.

I consulted an independent eye surgeon; he even said it's too risky ....
He told me that if the "bubble" weren't in a direct line of vision, he'd tell me to go, and if it went bad the correction is free (for life, as is all lasik from where I got it done) ...

If it goes, I'll be blinded in one eye for the trip ....

I'm sorry, people, I did EVERYTHING that I could, and asked 3 different doctors, and they all agree ...

I wanna be there, but I'm not gonna take that risk ....
It's a shame, I had everything covered; minus this eye thing ...
I even got a low interest credit card to put it all on ...

It hurts not to be able to go, however, in 2 years or so, I'll hit the next one ...
I really DID try all I could, and within means ...

Take pics and think of me ....

*sigh*

All,

Changing money is where you can lose big when traveling. Some ATM cards can be used over here, but the spread (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bid/offer_spread) can kill you. When I use a Japanese ATM card in New Zealand the rate is 10% higher than what it is on the market. Ie, if I withdraw $1000 I lose $100 instantly.

Just ask Kyle about this, it's really important to be organized with your money. Finding an ATM that will accept your bank card may be difficult or might not even be there. Kyle had real issues with his BOA card and spent good chunks of his time dithering around trying to get money out, and when he did he didn't get enough which led to more dithering. When you can't talk the language or read street signs that's a lot of dithering.

Lastly, the ATM technology here isn't great. You can assume that whatever people tell you in the states will be wrong about which ATMs support your card. Dozens of friends have turned up and found that surprise surprise, their bank teller in their home town of 3,000 people was incorrect that they'd be able to get money out anywhere. I'm not joking about the 50,000 yen. It may seem like a lot but this is one of the most expensive places in the world, and also the safest.

Sure. Or I can put it in my bank account which can be accessed from 7/11 ATM's (everywhere) and give it to you when you need it if that makes it easier.

Or you can put it onto Luke's CC but you should check the exchange rate first. If it doesn't make a difference then putting half onto someone's CC may be cheaper as any money you don't wind up using you wont have paid exchange fees on.

Because in MOST CASES the recovery is only a month, my problem is they had to SHAVE MY RETNAS with PRK before the lasik ...

I'm a rare case, and things are prohressing nicely; that said, if I knew it'd been an Xmas present to myself ...

I didn't know this would be the outcome; if I did, I'd have waited ....

You knew about this BEFORE the lasik.  Why didn't you say, "what is the eta on healing if I have to shave my retinas?", and if they said an amount of time that was too long you should've said, "well then I will wait until November 8, 2009 to have this done."  Your argument is a fallacy.

The only places my BOA debit card worked at were at Narita, and any Chase bank ATM I came across. (which were few and far between). I tried my card at many, many places. Convenience stores, other banks, etc. So yeah, I am going to have all my yen before I get to Japan this time. Very cool of my mom and her husband, but for my birthday they sent me 20,000 yen. I also have a little bit left over from my last trip. Just need to find a good exchange rate here and go for it, for the rest of the dough.

I think I asked you this Nick but I don't recall the answer. What about the concept of cash back when paying for a purchase somewhere with your debit card? I may have asked you at that store in Akihabara where I bought those two weird/cool Godzilla-like creature toys. Can you get "cash back" when you use your debit card to pay?

Also I FUCKING LOVE not having to worry about tips! Japan is awesome.

EDIT: *Ah shit Lucas, after I wrote all that out I see you were joking about your BOA card hah. Fuck it, I don't feel like deleting it all.

Yeah, apparently there is a United Heritage Credit Union at the airport that exchanges currency, but I don't like the idea of at the last minute having to hope that they have enough yen on hand. Maybe I will just order some if they can get it to the bank in a couple of days.

Link to United Heritage Credit Union @ Bergstrom. http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/austinairport/personal_svcs.htm (http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/austinairport/personal_svcs.htm)

I also called the Four Seasons because I heard they have one, and since it's right next door to where I work that would be easy, but they only provide hotel guests with the service.

Is this still the itinerary? Museums are only open until 6pm I noticed, so I guess we could go to hopefully one.  I wanted to go to Harajuku the first day, so museums may have to wait until the 5th or 6th.

1 Nov (Sun) -(Arrive approx. 2pm) Tokyo Sightseeing.

Title: Re: Flight arrival info
Post by: underclass on October 27, 2009, 11:41:48 PM

Kyle has done this before, so I think the bunch arriving at 14:xx can all get cells and jump on the train with him. It's pretty simple: inside Narita airport there is a JR train station. Show your pass at the ticket window and ask for a "Limited Express to Tokyo". Get on train. It's all in English. You'll have cells and I'll make sure you have my number. Ian and I will meet you at Tokyo station and take you to the hotel.

Let me break this down...

Firstly, the place to rent cells is separate from the train station area, so you'll need to get that hooked up first.

1. You will activate your JR Rail Pass at the JR station inside Narita Airport, it's down a few floors from the arrival lounge
2. Ask for a Limited Express ticket to Tokyo station
3. Once you know what time the train will leave and your seat number give me a call and I'll be waiting at the platform.

Cheers,

I want to see the museum too!

I don't know if I am more excited about the trip, or the video that my darlin' is making for me to "keep me company" on the trip! Haha I loaned her my video camera on Monday and gave her free creative reign to do something that will, quote, "keep me from going to Japanese whorehouses." haha. She thought that was hilarious.

(obviously I am more excited about the TRIP!!!!!!)

See you guys soon (tricky sooner than most!).

I still haven't done any laundry.  I spent all day hungover in bed.  It wasn't this bad this time.  I have finally figured out that 7 drinks are my absolute limit.  3 of those drinks were shots however, and that was what did me in.  I have a four drink maximum in Japan.

I just finished washing my clothes. Time to shave the beard up, shower, pack and wake up at 4:30am for my cab.

NICK - Holy shit! I just now realized that the Tokyo Motor Show is going on RIGHT the hell now (through Nov. 4). Have you been before? Apparently it's in "Chiba City"? Probably not anywhere close to the hotel eh?

If this isn't too late... the easiest place to meet in in the arrivals lounge.

Anyway - call me when you get your cell and I'll bring you together!
