magic shrooms or delicious shrooms?

Re: fixin to go on a shroom hunt Reply #2 on: August 29, 2009, 09:45:33 AM
shrooms in general.. we are pretty much past our dosing days so the magic ones aint on the top of the list, chanterrelles grow by the  bushel within eyesight of the house so we have the edibles covered as well.

we are just students of wildcrafting and are expanding our knowledge  in mycology.

Are you east coast then? I have my own Chanterelle rounds in Vermont. It's funny because at least one of the patches I know of has another watcher since from time to time the field is reduced to broken stipes. I tend to collect from that one when the mushrooms are pretty small. What else do you collect?

And yeah pics would be great.

yeah we are in the north georgia mountains in the cohutta bio region.  only 3 places  like it in the united states.

right now we pretty much collect anything we cant identify, take picks and a spore print and put it on the shroomery for identification, then catalog it for future reference..
but we tend to take lots of picks of all we run across..

anyway, the mornin is passing us by, gotta git..

will post our finds later..

have a great day..  ;D

Apart from Chanterelles (which are probably my favorites) I regularly collect Lactarius deliciosus, coral mushrooms, Lawyers wigs/Inky Caps, and Morels when I can find them. I've had a giant puffball and a Boletus once each, and Amanitas grow in great profusion if I wanted to give them a whirl.

It's funny, but magic mushrooms are the thing that turned me around on mushrooms in general. I never used to like mushrooms but after shrooming for the first time I figured what the hell. I if can stand that I'm sure the edible ones would be even better. I was very right. I love mushrooms now.

Good luck on your hunt.

thats really cool. we are VERY much novices at mycology. over the years we have had folks come through that are knowledgeable and have learned a little and we have learned a bit from identifying ourselves with a mushroom bible but folks keep stealing them..lol

its all good though because i like the shroomery for identification.. they seem like a good bunch of folks there..

anyway, our stupid cameras battery died so we are having to recharge it,in the mean time here are a couple photos we are fond of i thought you might enjoy. will post more later..

old man of the woods,

stinkhorn

indian pipes.

chanterelles

and these beautiful lil buggers are Cortinarius, probably Cortinarius iodes.

I miss living ne
ar where plants grow
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

Re: fixin to go on a shroom hunt Reply #8 on: August 29, 2009, 11:53:36 AM
looking good. Although indian pipes aren't fungi... Still I think they're pretty damn cool anyway. The kind that grow up north are called Ghost pipes and they are completely white (rarely with a hint of yellow). Indian pipes grow too but are quite rare.

The chanterelles look fantastic although it looks like that was from '04. In the NorthEast it's been rainy and cool all summer long with the shroom-growing heat only coming in in late august. Too bad I'm back in the city and out of mushroom territory now.

Know any good chanterelle recipes?

no that was like a week ago. our camera is old and the battery keeps dying so we dont bother setting the date..

the reason i included the indian pipes is because of how beautiful they are and the fact that they could not exist if it wasnt for them being a parasite on fungi themselves.

we mostly dehydrate our chanterelles and use them just like a regular mushroom..

yeah i know the french would shit,ah well i dont like the french no way.. ::)

Yeah I assume whoever moved it wasn't actually reading the thread.

Do you guys have Jack-o-lantern mushrooms (or False Chanterelles) down in GA? Apparently they grow in VT but I have yet to find any. I hear that they are bioluminescent. I would LOVE to see that. Things that glow in the dark are still about as close to magic for me as anything.

My living room sometimes has mushrooms.  You're more than welcome to them, HHB.  Ugh...fucking trailer houses.

yeah we have false chanterelles here,on occasion you can find foxfire as well.its amazing how much fungi there is around here. every time we go out we see new species, and then there is sub species upon sub species of each species. we will never become experts i dont believe. but it is a fascinating hobby and it coincides nicely with our wild crafting.

its all good. i know i will take some getting used too. i aint much of a druggy no more so ya wont generally find anything in my posts that warrant the substance abuse forum..

lol, yeah i remember that thread.. we have assorted fungi growing indoors as well but its confined to potting soil under house plants..

Re: fixin to go on a shroom hunt Reply #15 on: August 29, 2009, 12:49:14 PM
I grew some button mushrooms/portobellos in my basement from a kit one year. Kind of like trailer house mushrooms... I've been toying with the idea of getting a psilocybe grow kit, but sadly I have no time these days.

As far as identification goes, I've never gotten too deeply into it. I took a class on fungal pathogens one year and they taught us how to identify fungi generally, but seriously I'm not about to go into the woods lugging a microscope to check out spores. I just go by eye and I have a good memory for productive growth-areas. Man I'm getting hungry from all this talk of mushrooms.

we have been throwing around the idea of inoculating some logs with shitakes for some time now but havent as yet got around to doing it.

everything is a work in progress around here and we can only expand at a certain rate. we are after all dirty lazy hippies .. ::)  well at least two of those at any given time..  ::) can only be as lazy as the chores allow..
