I have never had my major US bank say, hey, honest mistake, here's your money back when I fuck something up.  I've never even had them fuck something up then resolve it for me in a timely fashion.

I think the same should apply.  The only problem for those people is that they probably didn't take enough money and head someplace they actually could just disappear.

Trust an Australian bank to fuck something like that up.

Westpac are probably the worst bank I've ever dealt with. Good luck to them Kiwi's, but it'll probably end badly for 'em.

I think they're in Hong Kong right now. Funny stuff
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

If you can't buy your anonymity in HK then this is not a world I want to live in...

I bet they be heading to Macau.

Gonna give all them Edmund Hillary's up to James Packer and Stanley Ho.

I'd like to know exactly how much they managed to make off with before the bank noticed.  The article says "some of."  I hope by "some of" they really mean "almost all of."

I also think it's absurd that they call those people thieves.  If you threw a baseball into my yard, does that make me a thief?  What about when I pick it up, am I a thief?  What if I use it?  What if I throw it away?

Re: Bank Error Reply #6 on: May 22, 2009, 10:44:21 AM
You become a thief when you take the ball and use it knowing that it does not belong to you. Minor technicality. I'd have taken the baseball to Costa Rica.

This reminds me of a story that Luke told me.  He said that he found a wallet one time and went through the trouble of returning it to the owner with all the money in it.  I think the bank should just suck it up and except that they fucked up and someone took the money out of their found wallet.

When WAMU **LOST** a check that I had deposited for $15,000 they asked ME to cover THEIR bank error, and then when I said no way they wouldn't let me use my own bank account until they found the lost check, which was 3 months later. No wonder banks go bankrupt.

When I was about eight or so and we were on holiday in Florida, there was a drunk guy in the pool making a real ass out of himself, flashing his wallet around and trying to get served in the pool. I found a floating dollar bill, and like the good little boy I was, I took it to the dude's wife. She told me thanks for being honest, but finders-keepers. I then found a hundred dollar bill that she accepted.
ever tried. ever failed. no matter. try again. fail again. fail better.

I think the important thing to learn from this situation is that Sasha listens to my stories!

This reminds me of a story that Luke told me.
