kicking around Antigua visit ideas on: August 22, 2009, 04:45:11 PM
(Just so this doesn't get lost in the CT thread)

Who all is seriously interested?
Roughly when?
For how long?
Roughly what kinda budget?
etc.
ever tried. ever failed. no matter. try again. fail again. fail better.

I'm seriously interested.

I'd be open to any time next year, based on when other people can also go.

I'd take a week off work - wouldn't necessarily have to spend it all there.

As for budget...I'd spend enough to have a good time, but not really be out to blow a ton of money either.

Re: kicking around Antigua visit ideas Reply #2 on: August 22, 2009, 05:16:36 PM
Same here. And if I do have a boat I can sail down, it would have to be like late December - mid Feb.

Me
January 2011 December 2010
1 week minimum, 2 week maximum
$600 a week (excluding flight but including rooms)

Is it unreasonable to assume the same level of expense in Antigua as I find in Panama?  Yes, it is unreasonable.

A few thoughts on roughly when:

January:
-lotta people are still around from xmas/new years so lots of partying to do
-nicest weather of the year, warm and sunny but with a beautiful breeze
-still tourist season so everything's open
-but that means hotels and stuff aren't doing any cheap deals... more on that later

February:
-weather's still gorgeous
-my birthday at the end of the month w00t!
-super bowl at the beginning of the month w000t!
-still tourist season

March:
-weather's heating up a bit but still a nice breeze
-still tourist season, and gearing up for sailing week, so lots more yachties and parties in the yachtie area

April:
-weather's getting pretty warm, but the water is clearer for snorkelling etc
-sailing week at the end of the month, which is basically a three-week-long party (there's some sailing somewhere in there too, I guess)
-because it's sailing week, hotels etc are booked up way in advance and go for premium rates

May:
-weather's heating up pretty nicely, still a decent breeze
-sailing week over, tourist season is done, restaurants and stuff start closing for the summer (those that close, anyway)
-cheaper accomodation rates start

June:
-hot
-water is beautiful, warm, clear, and calm
-hurricane season starts
-island's kinda dead
-my own vacation tends to start sometime in mid to late June

July:
-really hot
-water stays gorgeous
-people start coming back for summer, partying ensues
-I tend to be away for some of the month (although if we plan far enough in advance, I can always rearrange that if June or July worked particularly well for people)
-hurricane season

August:
-even hotter. breeze starts dying
-everyone's back for summer, lotta partying going on. bars are full every night of the week
-hurricane season

September:
-hottest. no breeze (late August to mid-to-late September is the hottest time of the year)
-everyone's left again, this place is truly a ghost town
-peak of hurricane season

October:
-breeze starts coming back. thank fuck. october starts out pretty warm and ends up gorgeous
-places that closed for summer start opening back up
-cheaper rates may still be had
-still hurricane season, but feels safer than September

November:
-lovely weather. days are pretty nice and nights are beautiful
-hurricane season is over!
-island's back in full swing

December:
-best weather of the year
-probably my favourite time of the year here, actually
-from mid December onwards, everyone comes back to the island for xmas/new years, so the partying is great

$600 a week is a heavy party in Panama (excluding flight but including rooms)

Is it unreasonable to assume the same level of expense in Antigua?

Unfortunately, yes.

Okay then - please reset my expectations to an appropriate amount per week (mins and maxes work well in this kind of conversation).

The best deals that come up on expedia for hotels are in the 100-200 dollar range, so you'd have to figure at least $600 for lodging for one week.

So maybe $1,000 minimum?

Re: kicking around Antigua visit ideas Reply #11 on: August 23, 2009, 12:42:30 AM
Have y'all never heard of TENTS???  With bedrooms, and screened rooms, for LESS THAN ONE NIGHT's stay in a crappy motel???

EDIT:  And an inflatable mattress that i can guarantee won't cost more than about $90, for the Queen-sized Bumper Pad (it's as tall as a reg mat), and less than $40 for the twin.

Don't y'all CAMP OUT???  A MILLION things to cook, in ways you've never imagined, but taste delights, nonetheless!

Man, sometimes less is MOAR!  And when you're depending on booze, pot, coffee, and other stuff for entertainment,

it's amazing how entertaining it is to get to know someone, what their life is like, really like, you know?

Especially sitting around a campfire with some dumbass trying to play some rap or punk shit on an accoustic guitar!  rofl
[/size]

p.s.  The tents, mattresses, etc., can be shipped for purchase delivery to Si, so that you don't have to worry about that.

i would also suggest at least two port-a-pots ~ men can use a pee bottle, but women need a larger "target," as it were!

We camp out at the river when we party there. I camp out at SCA events, sometimes for as long as two weeks. I camp when I'm hiking, but the most I've done that so far is ten days. I camp enough.

For me, it's the paranoia of unhygienic cleaning of the rooms, and just the fun factor of living outside, sort of!

i know a TON of recipes for camping ~ between actual camping and living in a flippin' sleeper, i got some good cooking down, pat!

And i bought the mattress to be able to stay with my mom, 24/7, and it was plenty comfortable, and it blows itself up AND down!

i've never had a tent with the screen room in the front, and the bedroom in the back, and i think it would be SO COOL!!!

ESPECIALLY on Antigua!!!

"i went to Antigua, and spent approximately $15/day on EVERYTHING i did!"

Sailing to the leewards 300 miles off the east coast in December is not particularly my idea of a great time. You don't really get warm or dry until that last SSW turn off Savannah.

But in all seriousness I will need a crew. So volunteers for a month or so in warm weather will be accepted. The record, last time I checked, was Newport, RI to Bermuda in 3 days 6 hours. So including a run down the bay, a loop offshore to catch a trade, maybe 5 of that will be travel. And we can hang for a few days in Ft Myers and Canaveral on the way back.

For reference:

Depending on what time of year it is, tents set up in my yard could be an option, but honestly it's usually pretty fucking hot sleeping in a tent in the Caribbean.

Second time I've said this:  try not to get involved in something where your input is not needed.

GA-zillionth time i've said THIS:

PUMP OFF.

Don't like it?

Don't frickin' read it.

And perhaps i should become the Queen of making others STFU, when Their Input is nothing but negative drivel...

If y'all go in December, the weather will be glorious ~ even Si says so.

AND the partying will be hearty!

NOW, perhaps someone should ask about the camping in the yard, or where the nearest, convenient place might be.

Well, if they'd like to camp.  Oh.  Y'all are "into" VILLAS and such?

Cripes.  You're a lot better off than me, but i'll bet i have JUST as much fun, on 1/20 your budget!  Pffft!

Where does your input fall on the spectrum?

After all, you've already defended me for being cool, and then said that we should go camping in the carribbean.

Where will the madness end??

i'm not real sure it ever does, to tell you the truth...

You ARE cool; but that doesn't mean i can't think you're a fuktard about certain things, and, pal?

If we are going to Antigua in December of 2010, count me in.  I will go and I will be renting a villa not sleeping on the beach.  I have a fear of the homeless and rape.

Dollars are not an issue for me, time is. Thing is, December 2010 might just be perfect, I be planning on taking my Long Service Leave about then.

And before one of you geniuses pipes up and accuses me of being rich, I aint. I just look after my income carefully.

12/10 is perfect for me. money is not an issue when it comes to not camping out. been wanting to see antigua for nearly ten years. i'm sure some sally will harsh my mellow on this one, but who invited fyrenza or her "camp recipes" anyway? respectfully, please go play in the hf designated threads. much appreciated.
