Yeah and the fact is that there really isn't that much to upgrade anymore, in my opinion.

I think Windows 7 will surprise you and your so-called "facts."

Well, no, he's right... the basic operating system doesnt change that much, I mean it has hardly changed since Win95. If everyone went 64bit tomorrow, then theres a big change in operating system. Windows is so clogged full of shit I never use, I wish Microsoft would release a basic stripped back version of Windows. No extras. Like DOS was until they started adding little things.

That said, I have extensively used Vista, and really, it blows goats. Thats what happens when Microsoft try to out Apple Apple. I stayed with XP.

That's always been Windows' problem. My basic issue with windows which makes the whole line inferior to DOS is that it forces you to learn the architecture of the OS in order to remove things rather than to add things. With DOS, it's true it wasn't very user-friendly, but the motivation to learn how to use it was that you wanted the resulting good that came out of it. With Windows it's obviously more user-friendly, but I spend most of my time learning the guts of it in order to get rid of bullshit I don't want. The thing is A)the motivation to learn a system to strip it down is lower than the motivation to learn it to improve it, and B )my natural instinct when a system forces you to do much learning for such little reward is fuck it, I'll find something easier.

I HAVE scaled back versions of WinXP and Vista ...
We made 'em so MOST of the "shit" is out of them, and they still work perfectly ...

Yeah, I actually completely missed the Windows 3.1 experience because I refused to use it instead of DOS.  I was always ranting about how it was going to turn the computing world into a McDonald's employee's idiot picture-menu.  And I was pretty much right, but now I also see the advantages of that world.

But we all fondly remember the hours and hours spent trying to get autoexec.bat to bring up a list of all of our programs and actually run them right.  I kinda miss those days.
No one mourns the wicked.

I'd go back to DOS tomorrow if it'd run some of the stuff I use

I want to install a Linux file server to back up all my wife's stuff. It's one of many things I want to do.

The best (least crash-prone) computer I own is a 386 with a DOS base, and Win 3.1 and OS/2 installed. It's my AK47 to modernity's M16.

And if I really wanted to, I could go online with it.

6/9 of my computers are running on Pentium M (Banias) procs.
I have one that only pulls 45W under full load (30W @ idle!).

Do you know how much power the nearest lightbulb to you pulls?

Like, is it an energy-efficient 11W bulb, or a dim 40W incandescent, or a blazing 100W spot?
