Re: stuff to do Reply #30 on: May 07, 2009, 01:33:16 AM
Note: if you let me know your scene and budget I can try to find stuff.

Kyle had a surprise when he found out a show would cost about $60 - that's standard here.

I haunt bars and restaurants run by mates of mine. That way I get a good deal, lots to drink for pretty cheap and there's often gambling, karaoke and general carousing after the other patrons go home

I'm into trash disco dance club, seventies rock, and super mod glam stuff.  I would love to go to dance club there that doesn't play electronic music but more seventies soul and sixties mod music.  I have no interest in going to a concert in Japan unless it's someone like the 5 6 7 8's, they are rad. $7 for a drink is steep, but now that I think about it I probably shouldn't waste my time getting hammered, because it takes me a whole day to get over a hang over.

theres enough to do without live music.

Unless BORIS is playing....

I'm going to be sticking with Nick or Mosh, and hopefully I don't get sick of them (or they of me).

But as was told to others, before:  you are free to wander off, but you MUST have a rented cell phone (from Narita airport) if you choose to do so, or you cannot expect us to meet you places.
Like yours.  Only different.

$7-$10 per drink, that's just like NYC!
you treat me like a monologue ho

I'm surprised Nick hasnt got sick of me... specially on my 2005 trip where I got food poisoning and claustrphobia.

Phone is essential. I'll be getting one.

that was pretty funny. And how you gave up at the entrances to some temples with steps!

Yeah, I'm reconsidering my plan, and renting immediately in Narita.

Re: stuff to do Reply #40 on: May 08, 2009, 01:30:26 AM
That is one thing. You will be likely walking around for 5-10 hours on some days. For those of you in the land of big burgers that will be pretty tough. I seriously recommend getting some jogging shoes with really good support. If you can take a few two-hour walks to get used to it that may help.

I was walking up hill, in heels, smoking.  ::)

Everytime I go to New York I walk about 5 miles a day and I'm wearing my regular shitty tennis shoes so I think I will be okay.

PS- Steer me clear of every place that could possibly give me food poisoning.

OK, the food poisoning I got was NOT from a restraunt in Japan.

You know those bakeries that supermarkets have in them? The day I got into Japan in 2005, I bought a slice of packaged pizza from a supermarket near Nick's place in Koiwa. I was going to Nick's place (Nick was at work), and I was hungry,so I stopped at the supermarket to get something to eat. I saw they had packaged pizza slices and I bought one. It was very tasty. But it didnt agree with me. So I got a mild case of food poisoning.

It didnt stop me, but it definately slowed me down for the trip. I think it contributed to the claustro attack I got.

They have chicken sashimi here that I'll avoid for you guys. I had food poisoning once but I went back to the restaurant after and they gave me $1,000 (presumably not to tell anyone) and I've had it a few times since, but it's not something you get unless 3 independent people have recommended the place.

Like anything else over here there's always several options at a restaurant so you can always pussy out and order a beef dish, whiteys!

Ian, Dani (Ian's Partner), Nick (duh), Brook, Tricky have bought tickets. Lucas is trying to get time off work. Dave is avoiding this forum. God knows what Kyle is going to do... probably show up at Narita with a double-barreled dildo or something

I would guess 500-1,000 yen per day + use

*googles "rent cellphone in japan"*  --> confirmed

That's so cheap, why didn't Kyle get one when he was there?

Re: stuff to do Reply #53 on: May 08, 2009, 10:38:41 PM
Does the below answer your question?

Quote
Oh yeah... I almost didn't make it out of Japan. Funny how the smallest thing changes everything.

So, I had no money left in my wallet or pockets, nor any credit card with me. I thought I had 270 yen on my PASMO. Of fucking course I didn't. I followed your directions to the station, and try to enter and can't because there is only 110 left on the pass. Fuck me with a dead man's dick.

Ironically my saving grace was that I forgot to put my $13 USD on your counter before I left. So at least I had SOME currency.

I started panicking and talked with the security guard at the station and ran back upstairs and went to a couple of convenience stores to try and get my cash changed out. They both told me it was Sunday and the banks are closed. ARGH! By this time I feel like fainting dude. I'm really tired from not getting enough sleep, incredibally hot and sweaty from running around with a sweater on, had no breakfast or any water yet (no $$) and checkout time for the hotel had passed.

Finally, about 10:15am I go up to a couple of girls in the station and communicate well enough with them to give them my two USD and get 200 yen! YEAH! So I get on, and fucking get completely lost. (I'd like to blame it on dehydration, hunger, tiredness, anxiety about not getting to the hotel in time for check-out), but it was largely due to me being myself - a fuck up! Hahaha. ANYWAY.

I got to the hotel at 11:30am and they did say "CHECK OUT 10 AM" and sort of scolded me. I quickly packed the few things I hadn't yet, and it was already 11:40am. The time that my Narita Express was just now leaving the station.

Fuck!! I end up having the hotel folks look up the next time, and it ended being 12:40. I booked it to a citibank that had a 24 hour lobby for ATM machines open, got some money, ran to Shinjuku, and the 12:40 was sold out. I got on the 1:10pm. Hahahaha from there it was all uphill.

christ.

So for next time: never leave home without your credit cards and never leave narita without renting a cell.

having a cellphone immediately resolves the above, and any other problem that you may encounter on this trip, people

I found a list of things I want to do in Kyoto.  I can't a hold of my friend Kana who lives in Kyoto, but I still have time to track her down!!

Kyoto is really, really cool. You could easily spend 2-3 full days there. I think Ian and I did 2 nights and it wasn't enough
