I remember it was the greatest feeling in the world when me and my buddy growing up beat Life Force and Contra without extra life cheats. Looking back on it now it was probably the best I've ever been at video games -- when I was 8 years old. At some point in game development the philosophy changed from "this should destroy your soul" to "everyone who plays this game should be able to beat it and have flowers and rainbows and candy". If you try to load up either of those games today on an emulator and play them, holy motherfucking christ, they are 100x more difficult than any kind of equivalent game released today.
