Title: Unoriginal references that bother you
Post by: Zoomie on August 31, 2009, 08:27:55 PM
A lot of SciFi movies these days on Spike or SyFy tend to use name Terrell, such as Terrell Industries or Terrell Labs as the evil organization that accidentally destroys the world or touches off a chain reaction or something. This obviously references Blade Runner and the man who originated the androids that Decker is hunting. This always bugs me.

Got any?

Man, I still haven't seen all of Blade Runner. And I have the Every-Fucking-Edition-Ever-Made Blu-ray set. Makes no fucking sense.

I fucking HATE it when people say 555 in a telephone number.  All suspension of disbelief is gone because everyone fucking knows that is a fake number.

Except 555-1212. That one is real.

The only one I agree with so far is the 555 thing. It demonstrates such a clear lack of faith in the consumer. What do they think, I'll run out of the theater all sugar-rushed from gummy bears and dial the number at the drop of a hat? It really reveals what they expect the mental age-level of the audience to be. It's like as if they had to flash mandatory "do not try this at home" signs before all car chase scenes. Just lame as can be.

OK, watched the "ultimate edition". Wow... very different from the book. Like, way different. Dunno if I liked it.

There is one sound effect cliche (ala the Wilhelm scream) that really bothers me because I notice it so hard. It interrupts the flow of the movie for me. I've never been able to determine the name of the effect, but it's the same sound that the final boss of Doom II makes when he shoots cubes at you. It shows up EVERYWHERE, and it's usually associated with fire.

For your viewing pleasure, the Wilhelm Scream since 1977:

Holy shit, the whirring mechanical door sound from Doom, that is used in so many movies and shows.  I like it cuz it just reminds me of Doom.

How about when something in a movie is up for sale, or there's some business dealing or job offer on the table, shady or not, and they write an imaginary number on paper and slide it across the screen to the other party. IN WATCHING A 1986 MELANIE GRIFFITH MOVIE WE KNOW THAT BY THIS DAY IN AGE THAT MONEY AMOUNT IS A JOKE, JUST EFFING TELL US WHAT THE GODDAMN SUM WAS!

"Day and age", but yes, I agree about the money thing.

No that's OK. They usually use that noise for doors anyway so I just think of it as a door noise. I'm talking about the "Fwoosh" noise the boss of Doom 2 makes. See 0:20, 0:29, 0:34, etc in the following clip:
doom 2 boss (read descrtiption) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q74e0ilk63U#normal)
According to TVTropes, this particular sound apparently shows up in Event Horizon, but I've heard it in at least 5 films other than that. It's annoying to me because it was never a fire noise in the game. It's just some fwoosh noise of a cube traveling through air. But in films it's almost universally used to mean fire...

Whoa... that "fire" noise pisses me off too. They usually seem to use it when fire is spreading rapidly. I've heard it in various movies, ads on TV, etc. Lame.

In the Atari's remake of Boys of Summer they change the lyrics from:

Out on the road today, I saw a dead head sticker on a cadillac

to

Out on the road today, I saw a black flag sticker on a cadillac

makes me want to kill every time

So do I, but be thankful that at least that song effectively killed their career.
