Title: Today I had an epiphany...*WARNING: SAILING STUFF*
Post by: Zoomie on October 18, 2009, 04:08:02 PM
Sailing on the Lower Potomac is not sailing on the Chesapeake. They are as different as Miller's Pond is from Lake Superior, and as unforgiving, as I proved this week. So I've offered my skills as a contractor and woodworker in trade for some lessons. Maybe even trade one of my boats.

So the boy isnt a pussy after all. (?)

There is no dishonor is ignorance. My friends and family are worried that I'm not skilled enough to handle 4' waves in a 30 knot wind. I's a natural progression. I've done the pond, I've done the lake, I've done the river, now I have to conquer the bay before I can tackle the ocean.

Not suggesting that. I'm asking if the boy knows he is not a pussy. It's important... to him.  ( no..not suggesting you dont know this...I wasent there so i dont know how you acted..crap even that sounds bad..but yeah.)

That has nothing to do with it. No one suggested that he was a pussy except perhaps me, and only here. He was concerned with the wind and the seas so we motored. We hugged the shore too deep into Curtis Bay and got blown into the shoals when we turned hard abeam to clear the point. None of that was his fault. I already accepted responsibility.

Come on, give me a little credit. There's also a world of difference between a 5M training dink and a 8M Winnebago in a hull, especially when a fourth of the deck hardware is missing (no jib cars or blocks, no winch handle; yeah these were details I left out to mask my stupidity and insanity). And he's only been sailing with me in the 5M which is much faster and more responsive.

This thread went completely over my head.

Are you saying you're trying to practice up to sail on more difficult waters?  Or something else?

You get the credit now because I'm still getting to know you. I havent been lurking for the last 8 years, I really was not here.  (but to give you something, I would of been seriously supprised to read you needed to talk with him, hat in hand.)

Are you saying you're trying to practice up to sail on more difficult waters?  Or something else?
Nah, that's what he's saying.

Yes and I'm done now...so we can start making fun on him now.

I have bigger boats now Chad. I finally broke 30 feet if I can get the money together (and I will) and I have moved up from the calm waters of the Potomac to the unpredictability of the Chesapeake. So Im going to get some instruction. No big deal.

This is how these things go.  You get as good as you can on your own, and then you get a trainer to get to the next plateau.  Same with anything else.

I have a boat that can get me to Antigua next Winter. I need the skills to get there. And then maybe putter around the Gulf Of Mexico after.

If you pick me up in Corpus Christi I will sail with you.  I'm an excellent swimmer and I have seen Blue Lagoon and Cast Away, just in case things don't go as planned.

Nice, I crashed one of those into a chain link fence once when I was working as a rigger.

Fucking fork lifts they gave us to work with never had the right ball on them and the boats (new) were mostly on trailers that were of the wrong type.

Add in a nice steep slope to the parking lot and a piece of 2x4 left in the path by another mechanic and wallah! One run away boat. I couldn't chase it with the forklift so I jumped off and grabbed the dragging chains  and steered it into the fence. That was the preferable outcome because otherwise it would have taken out a customer hooking up his own boat. Didn't hurt the out-drive though. Only real damage was that a fence post had to be welded back straight.

It made a nice net.

No outdrive. Straight inboard 318CI with Edelbrock Competition intake, Carter aluminum body 4bbl carb and a 10x14 four blade prop. She go.
