It's easy and better than the "Which U2 Song Are You?" quiz (which Lothar took and scored "Gloria").
OK so there seems to be a lot of hubbub in the halls of Congress over Toyota safety and who knew what and when. A few simple questions will clear up everything.
1. Do you think the average Joe gives a tinker's damn about Toyota?
Answer: No. The average Joe would never buy a Japanese car because Uncle Earl fought at Guadalcanal.
2. Do you think the above average, intelligent and educated American gives a tinker's damn about Toyota?
Answer: No. The above average, intelligent and educated American drives a Honda.
3. So why are elected officials in the US Government making such a big deal out of this when the Ford Pinto, the Chevy C-20 and the Chrysler K-car had worse problems?
Answer: Because the US Government currently has a controlling interest in Chrysler Corp and General Motors? Hmmm?
-
Quote from Bad Taste: Shoulda bought a Holden, Frank.
People who drive Toyota's dont give a fuck about cars. They should have their licences revoked, because if you dont care about cars, you dont care about driving, and if you dont care about driving, then you arent going to drive very well. Therefore, Toyota drivers are murderers.
This equally applies to Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and Suzuki drivers.

I love my Xterra. Fuck off.
-
Yep, I love my Fortuner. And the nice thing is, because it wasn't built in the US, there's nothing wrong with it!

As an American, I have to say just one thing to you, Si ...

I have a Toyota; an old one, that I just cannot get rid of ...
1987, 278k miles, 44 MPG, and runs like a top ...
It's a GREAT spare car ...
-
How much?
-
I paid $500 for it 12 years ago ...
Never had to put a dime into it (other than, you know) ...
-
I meant what would you take for it.
-
I'm not sure ...
I'll think about it ...
-
Take it to For Sale, already...

This is true.

Actually all of it was true. Particularly the part about redneck Uncle Earl and Guadalcanal. But the fact remains, Honda is small change compared to Toyota. So they are really the only thing that stands between a return on our bailout investment and the total collapse of the US auto industry when the next bubble bursts. I'm thinking about July 20th, when grads hit the streets, schools let out, no one can afford to relocate chasing job opportunity and parents have to stay home for the summer with their kids, and can't afford to vacation anywhere.
Yee-muhfuggin'-haw.

Toyota is trying to compete with Chinese car makers who do no R&D of their own and underpay everyone. Something had to break

LOL yep, I hardly pay attention to anything these days though.

My friend ran her Toyota into the side of a building the other day because it stopped working.
-
Well that's just no way to make a building work harder.

Geek, Emp, Lib, Tulip, Si, Zoomie... Honda FTW.
When getting ready to buy a car in 2006 i was looking at Hondas and Toyotas. I wanted the compact economy model with reliability, safety cheap price, and gas mileage in mind.
So I was looking between the Honda Fit (first gen) and Toyota Yaris (also first gen). So I did the usual thing. I ordered the consumer reports break down, read a bunch of reports online, watched some videos.
I chose honda. Why? More reliable though not as good gas mileage, more expensive but better interior features but here was the real kicker... the Yaris got REALLY BAD safety ratings... FATALITY LIKELY in 30 mph crash for LH side rear passenger (!!!) Complete death traps.
Unfortunately the FIT was on back order so I got a civic, and talked the bitch down to about the price of a FIT. Win. (Hate the tan interior, though, but I did get it for cheap!)
Last tid bit of info... my friends H&B (if youve been to my house, youve met H&B) paid 20K + for a toyota corolla (a higher class) and while its pretty nice, and spacious the Dash looks like an old game boy from 1988. My point: My car was much cheaper and the dash is pretty nice. In fact when a guy rearended me (LOL ANAL) on tasker street, he came up to my car and said "Oh man Im so.... HOLY SHIT LOOK AT YOUR DASH!!! FUCKING AMAZING!!!"

Whenever I listen to people brag about their cars, I replace the words "car" or "ride" with "financial imprisonment" inside my head, it's appropriate for most people and makes me chuckle. Now some of my friends have started working for investment banks I do that same when they talk about their jobs or trophy girlfriends.
-
Not all of us. I don't owe a penny on my truck, though it is getting of the age that it almost constantly needs some small repair. And our Civic is also paid for and other than oil changes is maintenance free at 7 years. But I know what you're saying, I've been where I had to choose between a car payment and shoes.
-
I bought my civic in 2006 and paid it off in 2008. I plan on driving it until it explodes.
-
You two aren't exactly the people I had in mind here...
-
I understood what you meant.
I've seen lots of people sacrifice far too much for their rides.
And homes, not a comfortable way to live.
And RTO .... hahahahahaha.
-
I can readily afford my car, but generally regret paying too much because there is no added utility for my car versus a 15 year old Ford.
And really, it's probably even worse because I can do basic car repairs...on a car that doesn't have a billion electronic parts.
-
Exactly, I just replaced the head gasket on my 63 Chevy PU (292 6 cylinder) and it cost less than $100 to do it myself.
Errr, not including beer.
Oh btw though torquing 14 head bolts in stages and in sequence to 95 foot pounds is no easy task.
-
Nick, where you live doesnt really require a car... fair enough, but where I live, a car is almost mandatory.
Now, I paid a good whack of money for my land yacht, but For the $'s outlaid, I think I got a lot of automobile. I suspect you'd agree.
I dont feel imprisoned financially by it, it really doesnt cost that much to run. Financial imprisonment can be applied to a lot of things.
And I'll agree with both the Geek and Zoomie, both of your Honda's are good cars. Toyota's are the homely sister in comparison, that's probably why they're fucking everywhere.
-
Shame your car dont make it into the public section of the car auctions very often. Even with the risks invloved, it'd be worth the punt.
and that said... Id go a honda before a toyota, but not at auction. used fleet toyotas are a good buy.
-
Perhaps. But an ugly hooker with a rusty knife is a potential problem, even when she's giving you a discount.
-
And the hits just KEEP ON COMIN'! (http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/koua-fong-lee-claims-faulty-toyota-brakes-caused-deadly-accident/19380139?ncid=webmaildl1)
Oh please. An Asian man in Minnesota??? You KNOW they can't drive worth a good goddam...
-
Yeah, I saw that...
-
Gloria is an awesome song.
-

Which risks? It's GM, so it'll run forever in this climate, parts are everywhere. Sure it's built to a price, so it aint mega luxurious, most ppls lounge rooms arent either.
-
Yes, parts are plentiful... is your money ?
Risk = money spent on parts fucking up the discount you got over a 2nd hand dealer. (assuming you got totally screwed and bought something that should really have its running gear/engine replaced.)
yeah fuck it i know it's a small risk.
-
ahh I see... but I probably didnt mention the car was previously driven by some Telstra manager on a lease through Custom Fleet, which are service nazi's, and I bought it through an official Holden dealer, so I'd expect that it would be actually roadworthy.
That said, it hasnt skipped a beat, though I do need to put new rubber on it. That'll cost roughly $2200. With care, it should see me to 2020. My money is also plentiful... at this time, and should be well into the future.
