Title: speaking of Cornish...
Post by: FAH-Q on June 13, 2010, 08:54:35 PM
(well, I was, anyway)

I was pleased to see this on one of my jaunts around wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cornish_Language_Shift.svg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cornish_Language_Shift.svg)

In retrospect, considering the fact that a) I grew up two fields away from Towednack Church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towednack), where supposedly the last services in Cornish were given, and b) geographically my little area of Kernow is famous for a place called Land's End[ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land%27s_End), it shouldn't be very surprising that it was the last area to succumb to the spread of English. I guess it's not surprising, but I do feel a sort of weird semi-pride (despite the fact that I'm not actually Cornish) that my little area was basically the last holdout of one of the last Celtic countries to be assimilated.

This probably means sweet-fuck-all to most anyone else, although I bet Zoomie gets what I'm saying.

If you were to substitute Welsh for Cornish and Glamorgan for Lands End... Yeah I got it all.

Cymru am byth!

I heard a lot of Cornish accent in your pronounciation when we spoke the other night Si... not what I expected at all. I had this weird expactation of a blandish neutral, English tinged accent.

Was cool.

haha that's awesome, man! I'm much happier to hear that than something like, "english accent? not really! you sound like a drunken pretend yank.", which is somewhat how I hear myself.

btw, I didn't remember having spoken to you at all till about 36 hours later when I saw the dialed call to 'Ian Mosh' on my cell. I had one of those suddenly sober, mildly worried moments, thinking, "WTF did I even say? did I totally make a fool out of myself?" but then I realized that a) yeah I probably did, but b) fuck it, I was talking to you so it was all good :D

anyway, next time I'll be a little more sober and might remember more of the convo!

Sadly, I'm probably a tad larger. And by tad I mean 25 pounds. But then, I'm also considerably taller, too...

anyway... beware...

I schlepped a 30 lb bag of cat food home on my bike today. It seemed like quite a load and I was struck by the fact that a mere 8 months or so ago I had that much extra weight on ME!

I have a fully functional mountain bike but I gave it away. I have two Raleigh touring bikes but the tires are narrower than my thumbs. I'm afraid I'll fold up a rim with my big fat ass...

I have a Trek mountain bike that's served me well for the last seven or so years. I love that bike.
