Title: I've got questions, You've got answers.
Post by: Luna on September 26, 2011, 05:34:27 PM
So,  does anyone else here work out? If so, what types of work-outs do you do? Do you listen to music while it's, going on? Do you eat a special type of diet? Have you seen results, and if so, were they the results you wanted to see?

And, if you regularly work out, can you still drink alcohol without any adverse reactions to your physique?

I've been working out for a while now. Since last November, i have only taken about 3 weeks off due to a torn articular cartilage in my knee.

Alcohol will knock me completely off schedule.

I do well with exercise as long as I treat it like a habit.  Every day, same time, no excuses.

If I get drunk and miss a day, I end up making excuses.  Then next thing I know I haven't exercised in a month because I keep making "i'll start again next monday" excuses.

Yeah, for sure. It's much easier to go 5 days a week than 1 day a week.

I'm going 4-5 days, doing 5-6 sessions a week at the moment. Sessions being anywhere from 45 mins to 2+ hours. Not drinking is making it really easy to stick to it, and I'm having a blast.

Do you get cravings for alcohol?

I've never been much of a drinker, but I know for sure that if I was still using speed I would probably end up polishing all the shiny stuff in the gym instead of using it...

Nope. I do crave sweet things more often now, though.

I broke a 2 week run last night with a little wine. Back to sober today though.

And yeah sweet stuff, during that 2 weeks I went through an entire 5 Qt bucket of ice cream.
Mostly made into milk shakes.

I baked a cake for the first time ever last week. Ate the whole fucking thing in three days. I do pretty well at not eating junk so long as I don't have it around, so I won't be baking again anytime soon.

Hmm. Yeah the only sweet i really like is chocolate, and I am thankfully too preoccupied  to buy any. Yay!

What kinds of things do you focus on during your workouts? And, do you plan your weeks out?

I've read that variety is the key to staying motivated and/or interested.....

And I am running out of "new" ideas so I was thinking about planning 8-10 different work-out's, so I can just pick one each morning and do it...

Any ideas about that?
Title: Re: I've got questions, You've got answers.
Post by: FAH-Q on September 29, 2011, 12:09:08 AM
I really don't focus on anything when I'm working out, that's one of the great things about it. I don't spend my time there thinking about anything but what's in front of me. I find it mentally very restful.

My usual gym cardio is the elliptical, and I've recently found that sudoku on my phone makes the time fly along, and since I'm only using my legs it's actually a little harder than arms and legs. That's about as focused as I get, and sudoku is pretty mindless anyway.

I don't plan anything week to week, but I have a set daily schedule. Saturdays and Sundays off, Mondays optional, and then I go hard Tuesday through Friday. I do my best to hit every muscle group at least once during the week.

I've only been going full steam ahead since July or so, but I've lost about 30 lbs since then. Not drinking obviously also helps with that.

I'm on a similar diet. it's called "living in a 40 year old motorhome with a fridge the size of my ballsac". Basically, you eat ramen and anything you can find to add to ramen. And since it's south Florida, all the citrus, lychees, mango, papaya, kumquats and avocados you can steal from someone's tree. So yeah, it's not bad when you run out of ramen. And things to add to ramen.

I do not have the money to join a gym so I am really working on the creativity factor with what I have at home. I've got a set of resistance bands, several small weights ranging from 5-15 lbs, a 5 lb ball, and a set of 10 lb ankle/wrist weights. Also, I have all of the great outdoors to run and walk all I want.

3 hours in the gym??! That's pretty awesome.

I know A LOT of people who have a gym membership but no time. I get angry when I think of that, because they all sit around in their lego-perfect condos and houses, whining about how they don't have enough time Ever to go to the gym... On Facebook. I get angry, and then I laugh. A lot.

And then I feel pretty good about myself, and my poor-ass situation, because with almost No Money whatsoever, I am dropping a size a month, and getting in much better shape. And I Still update Facebook and LOL at them.

Actually, all these whiny, wealthy asshats are mostly my obese family members. Whining to each other.

But I'm good. :)

That's pretty much it. I'm a creature of habits and it's hard to build good ones about going to the gym when your work takes so much energy. A lot of people are less fortunate so I don't complain and I made it over there today so go me.

I am surrounded by obesity and down home country fried rednecks. Not very many of them place any importance on health in any way so I feel especially esteemed in these parts.
I have much respect for people who truly wantto change and/or get/stay healthy even if they are busy.

I love exercise and really want to get a rhythm back on. For a year I was working out 4x per week and got in great shape. It'll come back.

Loony in Japan helps - it's hard to put on weight when pickled cucumbers and firewater is your Friday night special.

BTW, that's a pretty fuckin' decent set of stuff you have. You can do a lot with all that.

You were asking for tips before, and today in the gym I thought of something someone might find useful. I play little number games within sets. I tend to do lots of reps at relatively low weight, and I find it's really handy to sort of trick myself into completing sets. Instead of counting from 1 to 20, I'll count 12345 four times, or 12345671234567654321. 25 can be a count up to 13 then back down to 1, stuff like that.
Title: Re: I've got questions, You've got answers.
Post by: Luna on October 13, 2011, 12:08:24 AM
Yes! I do that... well, I count EVERYTHING. Steps I take, reps with weights/bands, leg movements, rotations when hand-washing, number of paper towels I use when drying my hands.....

But, I never thought it could help with working out. I count every rep, but I might try this method, because lately, I have found my thoughts drifting to softer, more relaxed things, when I really want to stay focused. Maybe this 12345123451234512345 for   20 will help.

Thanks for sharing that.

No prob!

Also, http://www.livestrong.com (http://www.livestrong.com) is awesome. I've been using it to record everything I eat and drink for about 10 days now, and in that time I've lost another 5 lbs, after having hit a plateau for a while.

You plug in your age, height, weight, daily activity level, and weight goals. The most you can select is a target of +/- 2 lbs a week gain or loss, because that's what's sustainable. For me to lose 2 lbs a week they're allowing me just over 1600 net calories a day (and as you lose weight and enter your lower weight, it adjusts this number down). I've found it pretty easy to stick to, and haven't really changed my diet much at all. I was eating fairly healthy stuff anyway, but I'm certainly not starving myself.

The coolest part is that having to plug everything in, it really makes you aware of where your empty, not even satisfying calories are. I was wasting a whole lot of calories on bullshit drinks, juices and sodas etc. When you open the fridge and there's a can of coke and a bottle of water there, knowing that the can of coke costs you 140 calories makes it that much easier to reach for the water. That's not to say that it's never OK to have a soda, but it helps you realize that you should have a soda when you want a soda, rather than just drinking something mindlessly because you were thirsty.

Livestrong also lets you plug in the exercise you're doing, and counts that against calories consumed. So I started the day yesterday with 1600~ calories available, but did a lot of exercise and burned close to 1500 calories, so I ended up coming in almost 700 calories under my daily allowance.

The one thing I'd say is vital when using this is to be honest and when in doubt, over-estimate how many calories are in whatever you're eating. If you guess something is 300 and it turns out it's actually only 220, well then great, you just saved yourself 80. Better that way that consuming a bunch that you don't mean to because you're in a fantasy world where mayo doesn't really count because it's just part of the sandwich. It's a total cliche, but you're only cheating yourself.

Speaking of food, something I've found really handy is to cook large batches of tasty, not super-unhealthy stuff, and then freeze individual portions in tupperware containers. Having ready-to-go meals in the freezer makes it so much easier to not get stuck eating takeout because you forgot to organize anything and you're hungry. And as a general rule, things you cook yourself tend to be a lot healthier than whatever you might be able to pick up on your way to work, at least in my experience.

I started the Power 90 (precursor workout to p90x) on Monday.  Doing things the right way this time instead of jumping into a tough workout then hurting myself two weeks in like I did with p90x back in December.  All it requires is a resistance band and a chair.

I've also been tracking what I eat and have basically discovered that I don't need to track - as long as I'm consistent in eating at home.  My problem is almost exclusively eating and drinking too much at bars.  It's becoming a lot easier now because my fiance has become obsessed with vegan, low fat cooking over the past two months and both of us are growing to be a little bit disgusted when we go out to eat and get vegetarian dishes loaded with oil and cheese.  I've come to the conclusion that chefs in the US simply don't understand what spices are and make up for it with lots of fat and salt.

They give us what people crave. It may be an irrational learned craving but still valid over the majority of the general population. That's why there are so many obese people everywhere we look. Plus eating healthy is far more expensive.

I think eating healthy might be more time consuming, but my grocery bills have trended down the healthier I have been eating (I categorized all of my spending over the past couple of years earlier this week, so it's fresh in my mind).

The majority of what I have eaten every day over the past couple months is bulk-purchased staples (brown rice, lentils, beans, etc), supplemented with smaller amounts of more expensive things like seeds, nuts, fruit, and vegetables.

I will definitely use the link provided. Thanks. I really like the idea that I will have a visual aid that will validate my accountability with this.

Where I am unfortunately located, the absolute most inexpensive foods are not even foods, in my opinion.
Boxed, dehydrated Monsanto-Dinner Surprise, basically.
I have a limited income, and a  very specific amount I use for food, and when I buy real foods, fresh and frozen produce, dried beans and lentils, rice, and spices, (Yep, I know what spices are for  =])  I end up having to borrow money from other areas, like the electric bill money.
If I  stick to the boxed crap, and no fresh food, I almost always end up with 20$ left over.

Even the farmers market here, is more expensive than canned  fruit/veggies.

In the Organic and/or Local section of the markets here, you will find that the size of the product is smaller, AND twice the price of the shipped-in stuff.

I am in no way commending Hamburger Helper....... (or anything that resembles that shit).... I have been on a very satisfying vegan diet before... until I could no longer afford the food.

I strongly dislike Any food that I do not prepare with my own hands.

you dont have to buy dried beans, lentils, rice and spices regularly. get to an asian area and buy it in bulk cheap, its what we do. they last for ages and if youre cooking just for yourself it'll take you a long while to get through them...

I find I save a ton of money if we cook and it's healthier. Japan is pretty good for health however... small portions and you have to eat a crap-load of rice and fish to put on weight here. I will go out of my way to pay for locally grown produce. The food tastes better, it's better for you and it supports the community. It's not really more expensive here either, maybe a little but not noticeably.

Here alcohol is expensive and food relatively cheap (if you earn yen), my wife doesn't drink so I don't when we're together so I think our dining costs are half what a lot of people here pay.

What's the unit price for imported California avocados Nick?

The price fluctuates wildly here, anywhere from $0.50 to $1.50 each. But that's for the smaller seconds. All of the prime produce is shipped out. I knew a guy from Japan back in 1984, he told me at that time avocados were going for $4.00 each over there. Here you could get like 5-6 pretty decent ones for $1.00 back then.
So it isn't any wonder why all the best stuff get's shipped out and we are left with crap in the common supermarkets.

When I lived in Idaho, they would ship all of the prime potatoes out.  You could go fill a huge bag with all the remnants you wanted for next to nothing after the machines had moved through, though.  We just got prime potatoes for free, though, because my mom was friends with one of the farmers.

Avos from Mexico are 100 yen each. Used to be a bit more but the high yen has worked its way through the supply chain and now shops are undercutting each other like crazy, good stuff. Food has come down a lot and will get even cheaper as the economy nears its end game over the next decade.

I hope durum pasta comes down in price soon, it's 2.5-3x regular "sugar rush" pasta... that said it's still 1/6 the cost of eating out.

Lucky recommended a recipe once a few years ago when I was obsessed with eating cheap (and a recipe I still use pretty frequently, though may not be exactly what he said at the time):

a few cloves of garlic
1 cup brown rice
1 cup lentils
4 cups of water + a bullion cube or vegetable stock if you have it.
8 oz can tomato sauce
1 carrot, chopped
1 small eggplant, cubed
1 cup chopped mushrooms
1 onion, chopped
Spices - I usually have Italian spices growing in my kitchen, so whatever looks good.
Any other vegetables you feel like throwing in (frozen spinach, whatever)

Basically just throw everything into a slow cooker, stir it up, and forget about it for 6-8 hours.
Title: Re: I've got questions, You've got answers.
Post by: Luna on October 18, 2011, 05:55:10 PM
I make something similar to that pretty often. I use basically the same things, too. The small differences are that I usually have some sort of stock on hand, in the freezer, as I keep any and all liquid from cooking, especially vegetables and humans. That way I still get to consume the "boiled off" nutrients. And I add a cup of beans to my "dish". That's what I call it.

I was going to say that I'm too anal to do that, but realized I would have walked right I to an Anal joke. So for the sake of this, and most of my other posts, let's just use the word obsessive.  Anyway
I like slow-cooker dishes too but I get all freaked out when it turns out as mush. So I add different things at different times so everything is in good shape when it's time to eat it. Lime how some lentils only really need about twenty minutes to cook whereas some beans need several hours. And things like carrots need several hours but onions cook up pretty quickly in a crock-pot. See? I'm even obsessive about adding forums discussion- because I'm pretty sure everyone here Already knows all of this.

Ah yes. I live in the gmo field of screams.
About sushi though- surely I can order ingredients online? Hmm.
Ironically I'm only about a three hour drive from the infamous Dodge City KS. Get the fuck out of Dodge...

Raw fish is raw fish, if it's fresh and not too polluted then sushi isn't bad, I've had some pretty good sushi rolls from a local deli. But for the most part ... I like my catfish fried.

Try it and let us know!

I had okonomiyaki with our CEO tonight, the guy who convinced me to stay when I tried to resign a few weeks ago. Still not sure about that move but we'll see. I think I took the LG crew to this place.

I also just read a book on economics about how fucked the world economy is and it doesn't matter who's in charge the fundamentals are all screwed and it's nobody's fault... boo.

What would you suggest? (everyone)

I'm fairly lucky in that, even being raised by white-bread eating, tv-loving stationary folks, I have what seems like an innate love for all whole grains. I will not purchase or consume processed shit, including the nasty staples of my parents- all-in-one meals like hamburger helper and bertolli.....

I love natural quick foods like apples. Any fruit or vegetable will do the trick.

I prefer to take the time to wash, prepare, and cook my meals.

My parents were like any other parents of the time, looking for convenient ways to feed a six-person family, so we were fed all of that kraft shit.

One day, when I was 27, I saw something on Food Network that I thought sounded tasty and I tried my hand at cooking a meal- my first, and I have prepared every single meal I have eaten since.

I think the recipe was for something like a twist on Shepherd's Pie.

My fiance was horrified when she saw my favorite all-in-one too lazy to cook meal - I'd microwave a couple red potatoes, frozen broccoli and cauliflower, some Morningstar fake meat, and throw it all in my magic bullet with a couple tablespoons of ricotta cheese and random herbs.

I feel fortunate my mom didn't serve too many all-in-one things or Kraft stuff (until my sister became obsessed with it in her teens).

I was just talking about this with my sister the other day, we were saying how lucky we were to have grown up with parents with "exotic" tastes in food. I don't mean anything truly exotic or unusual, but instead of the constant meat and potatoes stodge that's typical of American and British families, we always had lots of different things to try. It helps that both of my parents are fantastic cooks, as is my sister now. I'm getting there. I started much later than she did so I'm not even close to her ability yet, but my repertoire is expanding steadily, and the things I do know how to cook I cook very well.

I am lazy, though. I much prefer the cook a huge batch and freeze portions method to cooking something fresh every night.

Hot Damn! I almost cannot express how much I LOVE fresh foods and being able to come up with a meal that is nutritious and delicious, with no preemptive planning. On the spot creativity. It's like painting or sculpting for me. I can't wait to be able to do this in my own place, and when Zoomie visits. It's fun, I haven't had any complaints about my cooking from my kids, and the douche roommate loves it of course- he can't cook and thinks when I put cumin in the eggs for the morning burritos that it's some sort of magic.
My parents think using fresh garlic is "weird", lol.

Garlic is absolutely necessary in almost everything. I do my best not to hang around with anyone who doesn't like garlic or complains about the smell. Nothing against 'em, they're just not my kind of people.

Garlic people are my people too.
I like mincing garlic :)
Have you seen those jars of already-minced garlic in some clear liquid?
That stuff is icky IMO.
I've found that with the right combination of garlic, herbs and spices, I can omit salt almost always.

I don't really like garlic, except for in garlic bread i think.
It's alright, I don't mind it that much, but when I'm cooking I don't use it.

I like garlic, eat a lot and it comes out of your pores. Nothing to be done about that.

Like it or not, it's there.
Title: Re: I've got questions, You've got answers.
Post by: Luna on November 13, 2011, 06:24:37 PM
I think that after a while the garlic scent that comes out of pores kinda just melds with your natural scent. I don't think anyone has ever been like, "um, you smell like garlic." then again, probably everyone I know likes garlic. :)

Maybe. But if everybody's eating it then nobody can smell it.

No, really I don't think you'd start to smell like garlic all the time...

Ok, do people in general do things like say, "Hey man, you smell like garlic."?

If they don't, then I will never know the truth.

If they do, then I apparently really don't smell like garlic.

I know a few poeple who eat garlic as frequently as I do, and theye really don't smell like garlic either, BUT! I eat garlic, so maybe I can't tell??

How did delicious garlic become such a mindfuck for me?

And, depending on how it is cooked, it smells and tastes differently.......

I like to raost garlic, it ends up with a very smooth, rounded out flavor. :)

I saw a garlic themed episode of Good Eats the other night. I was high, so I don't remember exactly, but there's some trick to how many cuts/how much garlic is exposed to the air and how strong the flavour is. Something to do with a reaction to oxygen, perhaps? I dunno, I'd like to see that episode again.

i really like Good Eats, very educational, and Alton Brown is a bit anal about things, which is something i relate to.

cft: i find it unvomfortable to be in a public eating situation... i just don't go out to eat, but today i sat in at a panera bread when my parents had lunch and it wasn't unlike being at a farm with the cattle flocking towas the trough.....
