Title: Why is monogamy the norm in America?
Post by: tricky on January 09, 2012, 10:32:20 PM
well? thoughts?

why do you think that it's not more of a known fact that other kinds of relationships beyond monogamous relationships can and do exist?

Hey, there's no reason to conform to this nonsensical norm.

My thoughts: jealousy. Not many people can handle seeing their girlfriend/boyfriend fucking somebody else.

I have always contended that monogamy is an abnormal state for humans.

I think Nick is correct. Let's remember that the government was founded by freedom seekers but the a nation was founded by a bunch of puritans who fled persecution. And we still think we're better than everyone else.

It's not just Christianity.

Engles wrote about a theory for monogamy and what has become the western family.

The only way you can be certain of a child's family lines is through the mother in a society where promiscuity is tolerated.  Monogamy was the only way that paternity can be confirmed as well, which Engels argues arose alongside the notion of private property.  There have been later works that point to the same thing - as society moved from a notion of communal property (and communal raising of children) to private property, the issue of paternity and ownership became a big deal.

It doesn't have to be strictly monogamy, either - polygamy was allowed in many societies, but it was typically for men, not women.

Monogamy will continue to be the norm in the US because of the way marriage and child support work in this country.  Religion, while it does serve to reinforce cultural norms, is secondary to the legal and property issues.

I suspect that while everone thinks that monogamy is the norm, divorce figures suggest otherwise.

Monogamy is still the norm, I think.  Or serial monogamy, if you prefer that term.

I think the notion of open relationships or poly amorous relations are still on the outskirts of socially acceptable.

I like monogamy. I'm not religious at all.

I can share my food, clothing, money...lots of things, but I will not share my man.

We aren't the only species that does this, and certainly not everyone feels the way I do. But I do see alot of people settle down much later in life than our parents' generation.

There's a polyamory movement slowly growing in the US, but ti's still pretty small and not at all organized, so it's basically uinknown/unseen.  You have shows like Big Love and Sister Wives championing the mormon shit, but most of it is in the gay community, from what I've seen.  Particularly the lesbian community.  You'll have a small group of women, usually in college, having a polyamorous relationship with each other until either two pair off and start seeing each other exclusively, or one makes a big case of it and they start to distance themselves from her and she goes elsewhere to find a monogamous partner.

I hang out in an IRC channel that happens to have a lot of GLBT people in it so I tend to hear about this stuff quite a bit.  the stuff on transgender (apparently "transsexual is offensive now) and cisgenderism is confusing as shit.  GLBT apparently isn't PC anymore either, and a bunch of groups are trying to promote the term "QUILTBAG" instead, because it's supposedly more inclusive.  Damn, I know WAY too much about this shit.

Fuckin' fags'll be offended by anything. Are the terms buttfucker or clam licker not PC?

But more importantly, people still use IRC? Really?

Well relationships don't last forever.

Quiltbag. As in "why don't you quiltbags skip down the street and Venetian blind each other".

See? It makes perfect sense when you say it that way.

Yeah.

Q - Queer and Questioning
U - Unidentified
I - Intersex
L - Lesbian
T - Transgender, Transexual
B - Bisexual
A - Asexual
G - Gay, Genderqueer

"Intersexed" is what we would colloquially refer to as a "hermaphrodite", which apparently seems to be the N-word of the gay community right now.
