Title: TV Shows
Post by: Phaedrus on March 26, 2009, 07:05:38 AM
I've been watching a lot of television shows over the last couple of years, and either some of them are getting better, or my tolerance for grap is, I'm not sure which.  You have to admit, they're coming up with some original and neat ideas at least.

These are some of my favorites.  If you haven't seen them I suggest you go you hulu.com (http://www.hulu.com) and check them out at your leisure.

Life - Right now this is probably my favorite show on the air.  A police detective who served twelve years of a life sentence for a triple homicide is released after DNA evidence exonerates him.  He sues the city/police department after his release for an "undisclosed but at least seven figure sum", with the added stipulation that he be allowed to return to the force and resume his career as a detective (so he can also find out who in the police force framed him).  His style is odd, and he's fond of making strange observations and quoting Zen platitudes from a Zen philosophy book that he read while inside that kept him from going crazy.  Also, he has a strange affectation for fruit.  Sounds a little disjointed but it's actually really smooth, entertaining, and very well-written.

Life on Mars - An American knockoff of a british TV series about a NYC cop in 2008 who is hit by a car, falls into a coma, and wakes up in 1973 (the year I was born!) apparently a member of a police department in NYC there.  He sees strange things, hallucinations, visions, and whatnot, as well as meets his mother and himself as a boy in 1973, as well as other people from his past, and he's not sure if he's dead, in a coma dreaming all of this, or actually in 1973.  Neat show, that gets a little surreal at times, and has an AWESOME soundtrack.  One scene early on involving a police chase on-foot through the streets of 70's NYC while "Little Willy" by The Sweet played was just perfect.

Chuck - OK, this show is silly and unrealistic, but it's still a fun show and if you haven't given it a chance you're just a grump.  An underachieving geek and employee of the "Nerd Herd" at a "Buy More" store gets an E-mail from an old friend from the college he dropped out of that contains some special high-tech images called the "Intersect" that burn an entire CIA database into his brain, and since he is now the only copy of this information, he is forced to work with a hot CIA agent and a grumpy NSA agent (played by Jayne from Firefly) as they ridiculously encounter enemy spies and operatives while trying to hide Chuck's true identity as a helpless nerd.  I love the show, campy and silly as it is.

Pushing Daisies - God damnit, on looking up some info I find out Pushing Daisies has been cancelled.  Goddamnit ABC you fucks, you don't know something good when you've got it.

Well now I'm pissed off and don't want to do any more.  Any of you have any good shows to recommend?

Yeah, I've gotten back into watching Lost again, thogh I've missed entire half-season when it got stupid.  They seem to be shaping up now, though and I loved the big plot twist at the end of tonight's episode, though I'm sure it's a dream sequence or something.

American Life on Mars is no where near as good as British Life on Mars.

It's not terrible, but its a knock off. The follow up to Life On Mars is a show called Ashes to Ashes, and its not bad.

I really dont watch much in the way of TV these days. Shows I'll watch I download... The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, Grand Designs, Dr Who... and that's about it.

I want to watch the british version, but I'm not into downloading entire TV series anymore, thanks to hulu.  I barely even download movies lately, I just wait for them to come on HBO.

you can get the DVD of the first season @ Target pretty cheap right now.  I recommend picking it up, since cancelled TV shows usally leave the shelves quickly.

I think this show, BTW, and picked up the DVDs recently.  :)

I loved it.  It's like if Walt Disney and David Lynch got together to make a TV show and got Tim Burton to direct it.  The wikipedia article says that ABC's going to air the last three unaired episodes sometime this summer, but that it still won't bring it to a conclusion.  Fuller's gonna finish that up with either a comic book or movie, apparently.

My "Lost" theory's always been that they're on the island of R'lyeh, because of all the Lovecraft references in the first season, and the reference to Ann Arbor in this last episode reminded me even more of something from Lovecraft.  I predict that by the end of this season we'll see the others dancing around a giant hole with tentacles coming out of it.

I was about to lose faith in Dollhouse, but last week's episode saved it for me, I think.  It was really good, and a bit of a mindfuck.  If they can put half of that into all the other episodes, it would be a decent show.

Early and late NFL on Sundays, SNF, MNF, ATH, PTI, Jeopardy, Cash Cab, Family Guy (although I'm a little over-saturated with FG right now, it's on every fucking channel), Top Gear, Kitchen Nightmares, The F Word...

And then there's a bunch of crap Amy watches that I sort of watch by proxy. Golden Girls, Frasier, and Will & Grace (Lifetime morning block! Yay!) and all that stupid fucking crap on VH1 or MTV, the whatevers of loves. Ugh. Oh and ANTM. Ugh again.

Man, reading that list again is just painful. She makes up for her terrible taste in TV shows by being as super into football as I am, though. Our TV viewing is far superior between September and February.

>>supernatural.

Supernatural is one of the few I still watch. I watch Lost whenever I catch it but don't make a point of it.
I watch House occasionally but the episodes all seem the same and I liked the main character better before I heard him speak in his real voice.

I'm going to get one of those HDTV dongles for the lap top in a couple weeks. Might watch more TV then.
I've had Comcast basic cable for several years now and still have not connected that shit to my TV.
They force you to take basic TV before you can get their hs internet. I've also had one of those DTV converter boxes for several months and it's still in it's box. There is more digital content on the air than there is on basic cable.

Once I get the dongle I may never turn the regular TV on again.

Also:
Mythbusters
Gangland (AWESOME!)
Lost
Heroes
Dollhouse (favorite)
Two and a Half Men
Fringe
Eleventh Hour

The Wrong Trousers is definitely the best of them all. A Close Shave is probably next best, then A Grand Day Out. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit was amusing, but it seemed like they kinda made it a little more childish and typical-animated-movie since it was feature length. I hadn't even heard of A Matter of Loaf and Death, will have to check it out.

Also, it goes without saying that Creature Comforts ads that started all this were fucking awesome!

There is a Disney produced Lynch film that exists. It is a true story based on a not-so-distant relative of mine.

I like Wallace And Gromit !
Ever seen Last of the Summer Wine?

Finally, "Lost" fucking sucks. It's written by 8-year-olds. It's quite clear that they're making everything up as they go along and that they have no grand plan for the show. I bet they're just as surprised by their sudden success with the show as the rest of us non-idiots. Evangeline Lilly and Emilie de Ravin are the only reasons to watch that show and even then only on mute. One thing that really makes me rage is when I overhear people arguing about plot details from the show. God that is the height of dumbness.

The only show I like that's in season right now is Heroes.

My other favorites are mostly HBO/Showtime stuff which I download on torrents because I don't have cable let alone premium cable.

Weeds, Californication, Entourage, True Blood are the only other series I really pay attention to (I've seen every episode of all 4 of those).

I've also seen every episode of Deadwood and Rome but those have long been canceled, and both ended terribly with lots of things unfinished which was gay.

I've been watching old episodes of Six Feet Under because I never watched that and I enjoy it but it's hard to really watch them several in a row they are a bit heavy in the drama.

I loved John from Cincinnati just for scenes like this:

John From Cincinnati: Car Dealership Scene from Finale (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8KL0_xuzCU#hq)

I wish I could find my favorite scene on youtube, but I've never been able to.  The scene where John's talking to the mother through the window like a TV salesman.

At least they knew the axe was coming for Rome and managed to close some threads up. Deadwood was a giant buttfuck.

What I read was that Rome was originally scheduled for 5 seasons, but they cancelled it midway through the 2nd season because it wasn't earning the rating/acclaim for the massive cost -- of course then it received all kinds of awards, praise, and had the highest ratings ever; but by then all the actors and directors and producers had all left to take other projects.  Just a massive failure on HBO's part.  The middle of the 2nd season to the end of the 2nd season is like a fast forward on what the last 3 seasons would have been like (I read this from an interview with Heller the director).  There are gigantic leaps of time from one episode to another and they really only briefly touch on several things to try and close the series out in basically 1/2 season instead of 3.

I watched both when I lived over there!

When I was back for a holiday this summer, I saw some of some new (to me) show called Hollyoaks. God, it was just awful. Yet somehow strangely compelling. I sat there, appalled, through about 3 different episodes. It's hypnotic.

0, or depending if I watch a ball game on the weekend maybe 2 or 3. I probably watch less than 10 hours of TV per year, and all of that being sporting events, usually in a bar with friends. If I was in NZ it would be a bit more, because I'd watch Rugby and Cricket matches.

Actually it was living in the states that cured my TV habit. We didn't have a TV so I didn't watch any and just read a lot for 6 months, after that I've never felt the need to go back.

Being in Japan plays a little part, because I don't feel compelled to "give a show a try". However when I'm at someone elses house with cable over here and people watch TV I start wandering around looking for a book or newspaper.

When I was a kid I was a TV junkie, mornings and evenings every day. I guess I watched enough TV before turning 21 to last me a lifetime.

I work somewhere around 45-55 hours per week, depending on the season. There are TVs all over the office, all on all the time. Does passive TV hearing/occasionally glancing at count? Also, does doing something else while Amy watches stuff count? Do movies count?

Depending on how we define this, I spent anywhere between about 3 hours per week and 65 hours per week watching TV.

Edit:  Also, since we're posting TV videos, I think the ending to Battlestar Galactica was one of the best endings I've ever seen, of any show:

Last 5 mins of Battlestar Galactica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ug4qqxBl3I&feature=channel_page#ws-lq-lq2-hq-vhq)

Are you fucking serious?!?  They sent the ships into the sun and they have the Cylon fucking ghosts run around criticizing everyone... "will they ever learn?" whatthefuckever.

OH, and the cavemen.  God in Heaven seriously?  They want us to believe civilized space-faring humans would settle down and make it with half-retarded nearly evolved cavemen??

I have an 8 year old Samsung Synchmaster that acts as my television and my computer monitor when my old Sony decides to work. Problem is the coax connector to the tuner is proprietary and they don't make it anymore. So I have to strip the RG-6, push it into the receptacle on the back and tape it into place. If someone (read: tulip or any of the plethora of mental retads) comes in to get a pen from my desk and moves the monitor, it falls out and I have to take the whole thing apart and fix it. Going to put this bastard into my Airstream, hook it up to a DVD player and leave it there. Buy a tv. Maybe.

Yes. Although as Billie put it, her dad can't watch the show either because he's a carpenter, and he drops by the merchant or the union hall and the guys are like "Saw your Billie on telly last night, hauling out her tits again"... which is always nice.

Title: Re: TV Shows
Post by: Phaedrus on May 08, 2010, 04:51:03 AM
My favorite two right now are Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara on Showtime.  True Blood is coming back on again soon so that's good, but HBO is starting to scare me with some of the shows it's carrying now.  It started with that low-budget show that Louis C.K. made that was kinda funny sometimes, but now they're starting to air these stupid shows that are little more than Adult Swim knockoffs. It doesn't help that one of them is just a bunch of crappy Ricky Gervais podcasts with cheap animation cobbled together to make it a TV show.  I hate Ricky Gervais and I wish he would die in a fire.

On that note, whatever happened to British comedy?  The UK used to be the masters of television comedy, and now the best thing that's been brought over in the last decade is Mighty Boosh, and it's not THAT good.
Title: Re: TV Shows
Post by: Zoomie on May 08, 2010, 08:40:57 AM
Johnny it's not like the old days. It's hard to dislike you when you're spot on. Louis CK is a tool, Jim Norton was the only funny thing on that show. Gervais is a shit, those animated soundbites make me want to cancel my cable subscription. The movies on SyFy (gay name change) are complete shit (Mongolian Death Worm... WTF man...) but the new Stargate series is kind of cool. And Merlin... it's like Camelot for teen girls. I don't get it.

Oh yeah SGU is good.  I never watched any of the previous Stargate shows but I gave it a chance because I liked the sound of the premise, and it's on my top ten list right now.  I have a hard time watching stuff on "SyFy" though, for exactly that reason, I can't even stand to watch the ADS for the other shit that they air, like that stupid worm movie.  Me and my roomate were making fun of it jsut last night with the "Inspired by a REAL Operation: Truth!" (or whatever) investigation.  Whoop dee doo, you made a horrible movie based on an episode of one of your even more horrible "paranormal investigation" shows.  If it weren't for SGU and Dr Who my TV would never touch SyFy.  And I may stop watching Dr Who depending on how well this new guy measures up to David Tennant.  I think I'm a little gay for Tennant.  Yeah, I said it.

Strangely enough, I like Warehouse 13.  I know it's bad, I know it's cheesy, but I like it and I don't know why.

Zoomie TruFyre. Sounds like a native American name.

The rest of it I'll pass on. Love you both but like Tru I'm old, grumpy and I have guns. Not a good mix.

On that note, whatever happened to British comedy?  The UK used to be the masters of television comedy, and now the best thing that's been brought over in the last decade is Mighty Boosh, and it's not THAT good.

I'm all about "The IT Crowd", it's fucking hilarious ...
However, it's not ported to the US yet ...

I've been digging That Mitchell & Webb Look. Peep show, not as much, although it has its moments.
