It doesn't make it totally alright, but it's worth pointing out that the minor in question was supposedly sixteen. It at least makes it more of a grey area than if it were someone considerably younger. I feel like it also might be less of a big deal to people had it been a sixteen year old girl.

Creepy older dudes taking advantage of young gay guys as they're just coming out is not uncommon if Dan Savage is to be believed.
I think it's even creepier than older dude/barely legal woman because the power dynamics can be even more skewed.

Yeah, that's true. It ought not to be, but an older guy does hold the power of potentially embarrassing the younger dude by outing him.
Still, at least it wasn't an actual child. And I believe the guy has now withdrawn his allegation, which means he probably just got paid a bunch of Elmoney.

Well, I think "Elmo" is well beyond Clash, and Elmo will just have a slightly different voice in the future ...

I mean sad that despite any actual evidence of any wrongdoing, this guy's whole life and legacy is ruined. Don't get me wrong, if it turns out that he was doing bad shit, then fuck him. But if his "crime" turns out to have been that he was gay, rich, and closeted, and people are just trying to take advantage, then this is sad.

On the flip side, even if he did nothing wrong he put himself in a very stupid situation by fucking around with, at best, barely legal dudes.

I think the bigger deal is the role he was playing - people are hyper sensitive about kids. I think the accusation of sex with a minor takes anyone on the Sesame Street team down.
If he's a character actor on sitcoms, a sub-A list actor in the movies, or similar, then it probably is in the tabloids for a few weeks and goes away regardless of gender.

The course of events with the first accuser doesn't seem like a witch hunt to me:
Dude contacts Sesame Street and meets with them about the accusation.
Dude gets his own lawyer after the first meeting with Sesame Street's lawyers.
Kevin Clash gets disciplined for what may expose Sesame Street to some degree of liability - emailing the accuser using company email.
Kevin Clash pays the guy $125,000 to say they didn't fuck until after he was 18.
