i find this really funny, since the majority of peole getting free health care in new mexico were mexicans. they were packing the joint and not paying a dollar for it. and people say we don't have free healthcare. even when uninsured i never paid a dollar for health care. hell, i pay more for health care when i'm insured.

On a more serious note... from an evolutionary perspective, viral outbreaks that jump between species are an excellent way of thinning multiple herds at once. It's a great indicator of overpopulation of the species, as well.
We're lucky this time that the virus is moderately contagious but not incredibly deadly.

There ARE some show on TV that do try to bring you the story and nothing but the story. Ture, they pick stories that are of interest to the masses, but ..it's not always the case. These show are usualy on public funded networks ( no suprise ). Ive been watching PBS for awhile now, it seems okay, yet I still get the feeling it's biased. With the Australian ABC shows I watch, I can tell when it's being pushed by a lobby, but I can't pick it on PBS, not yet anyway.

As for the 2009 H1N1 type A influenza, here are my predictions:
We will find out that Mexico lied, that the numbers infected were 10 times what we were told, hence the higher death rate there.
When H1N1 comes back later this year in a mutated state, we will be wholly underprepared, it will race through most continents, causing massive respiratory failures world wide with a death toll exceeding one billion.
I will be someplace safe with 200 gallons of water, 500 pounds of food and 1000 rounds of ammunition. Don't get too close, I'mma survive this one.

We haven't even had a thousand cases and it's been how long? Flus move way faster than that generally, I think.
I also suspect that the health of the people who caught it in Mexico should be questioned. Flus generally kill the old, very young, and people in poor health. In a country that struggles so much with poverty, I wouldn't be shocked if the people who died (and don't fall into the young and old categories) had other, untreated conditions which complicated the matter.
I'm still hoping for a zombie apocalypse 2012, so this flu better not get in the fucking way next year.

What seems to be killing the otherwise-healthy mid-20s folks in Mexico is actually their own immune system. Cytokine storms; the immune system severely overreacting to the virus, leading to a deadly feedback loop.

I got a flu shot two years in a row. I didn't get a flu shot any year before that, no flu. I am not taking anymore unnecessary vaccines. I took the Guardasil shot and had to do research on it for school and regretted getting it. The shot only covers you for 3-5 years. It's main side effect is death. AND they have no idea what the long term side effects are. I love being a government funded guinea pig.

I was burned up about not being able to get the gardasil shot because my doctor wouldn't give it to me until she did more research, and in that time I turned 26, which means insurance companies won't cover the 3 shots. Each shot costs $300.00 on their own (Ridiculous).
But as time has gone on i'm not sure how I feel about it. Without longterm research, how am I sure this is even safe?

I heard about this on NPR yesterday. Of the hundreds of thousands of series issued there have been 12,000 reactions and 35 deaths. A large portion of the reactions and most of the deaths were attributed to other factors, but since all had been given gardasil they were a part of the study. Most had weakened immune systems already due to recent medical issues or drug or alcohol addiction.
But I'm glad I don't have a cervix.

You can't really account for all the variations of what people put into their bodies and potential interactions at the initial study. The nature of the beast is that you're going to find out about interactions and reactions as people receive a drug/treatment in the larger population.
And people routinely lie to their doctors about drug use. They omit illegal drugs, abusing painkillers, under report how much they drink, etc. So even if there are known interactions, there's no guarantees if you're not absolutely honest with your doctor and said doctor is well informed.

I'm leaving third world countries out of this, cause really, they sure as hell couldn't afford to pay a couple of bucks per day for meds. I'm also ignoring the Chinese because we all know they'd just pirate the drug.

Well, there are already semi-plausible sounding theories about Lyme Disease being developed as a weapon and being accidentally released in the US. The USSR was known to be working on it as a bio-weapon. I wouldn't be surprised if more modern diseases were the result of accidental leaks from labs and the responsible researcher just keeping their mouth shut.
I think intentionally engineering something that only your company can cure has been considered, but I think the amount of people that would have to be silenced for something like that makes it highly unlikely - though with all the new protections the government has granted businesses to silence critics in recent years, the odds of being able to keep something like that silent have increased.

I'm leaving third world countries out of this, cause really, they sure as hell couldn't afford to pay a couple of bucks per day for meds. I'm also ignoring the Chinese because we all know they'd just pirate the drug.
But really, you think they haven't already considered such a thing? Forget threatening to nuke cities unless you get paid, this, folks, is today's bleeding edge of evil genius machination.
A lot of wEndering has gone on about this, and i can testify to this:
Early, last year (i believe), the Doctor's offices began giving ANTIBIOTICS for EVERYthing ~
a cold? Antibiotics.
a cough? Antibiotics.
a skinned knee? Antibiotics.
i started really wondering about this, because, as a nurse, i know that antibiotics are a LAST DITCH EFFORT.
Your body NEEDS to burn away/fight the infections that we all get ~ that's why you get a fever, and that's why, until it reaches a certain point, you let the body do it's thang. That's how your build immunities. That, and mother's milk, which can be discussed later.
So. Either we're being low-toleranced (there IS no such word, i had to make it up) for major virus and bacterial infections,
OR
we've already been exposed to something that is MAJOR...
i know. Sounds crazy? But i'm telling you the truth about antibiotics. Show me why, if you can.
p.s. Because of all of my health probs? i was HOSPITALIZED over an infected cat bite, which wasn't even that deep, so that i could be given IV Antibiotics, which was the fastest way of dousing my entire system with them.

I picked my current doctor based in large part on his reluctance to prescribe medication. I actually agree with you - exposure to germs and fighting off minor infections is good for your immune system.
Doctors have overprescribed antibiotics since their discovery, treating them like a miracle drug that will cure anything. Patients request antibiotics for everything, too, as though a pill will help you get over every disease faster. People also don't complete full courses of antibiotics - hence all the warnings they slap all over everything these days.
Additionally, livestock is raised in unhealthy conditions with diets they did not evolve to eat. They're given a constant stream of antibiotics to attempt to fight off the constant infection in their cramped living quarters.
The net effect of that is basically a "vaccination" for bacteria. Constant low levels of antibiotics or discontinued antibiotic treatments allow bacteria to become resistant to those antibiotics. It's ultimately a war we're losing, because scientists can't create new antibiotics faster than bacteria can mutate.
I wouldn't be surprised if the constant low levels of antibiotics in the water supply contribute to various bacterium developing resistance, either.

I wouldn't be surprised if relatively soon antibiotics stop working almost altogether.
And people routinely lie to their doctors about drug use. They omit illegal drugs, abusing painkillers, under report how much they drink, etc. So even if there are known interactions, there's no guarantees if you're not absolutely honest with your doctor and said doctor is well informed.
The night I threw up blood and went to the hospital to find out why (turned out acid reflux had fucked over my esophagus, which was bleeding), they asked me how much I routinely drank and I answered honestly. Won't be doing that again anytime soon. Not that I've needed to go to a doctor in quite a while.
Does anyone here think that someone, somewhere in the pharmaceutical industry hasn't dreamed of being able to create a highly contagious "nuisance" virus that their medications alone would be able to control?
Isn't that the basic idea behind DoS attacks and the "filters" that are sold to prevent them?

It's called a Rebound ~ when you stop taking antibiotics before the end of treatment, the bacteria/virus has a chance to overcome, and mutate, into something that that specific antibiotic cannot fight, since the bac/vir is IMMUNE to the antibiotic.
ALWAYS take Antibiotics for the FULL 10 days that they are prescribed.
