Title: stuff to do
Post by: underclass on April 27, 2009, 10:00:47 AM
These items are on the list - in the vague order I have planned.
If you want, read up on things you would be interested and post them here. While it may not be a group excursion I'll work in time for folk to see things they want.

I'm planning on everyone checking out of their hotels on Monday morning (leave your luggage at my place on Sunday night) and checking back in on Wednesday to save that cost.

1 Nov (Sat) - People arrive in groups. Link up with me. Get hooked up with a cell for Ian, Luke and Dave if he wants it. Groups who arrive early go to Akihabara because it's interesting on a Weekend

2 Nov (Sun) - Tokyo Sightseeing. Akihabara, Harajuku, Shibuya, Asakusa, Shinagawa Aquarium, wherever... People can go where they want. Dinner will be at a large Izakaya.

3 Nov (Mon) - Red-eye shinkansen at 7am -> Kyoto and a train to Nara. Temple Hopping, drinks, dinner, party party party...

4 Nov (Tues) - Nara -> Hiroshima. Arrive lunchtime. Go to War memorial. Dinner is Okonomiyaki and check out Hiroshima in the evening. I'll look up a cool area, but I've never been so if anyone wants to research please go ahead.

5 Nov (Wed) - Full day in Hiroshima. I haven't researched this but there will be lots to see and do with the peace parks, maybe a cool shrine, shopping etc. Picnic lunch or something. Shinkansen back to Tokyo mid afternoon. Check into hotels and dinner somewhere in Tokyo. I imagine everyone will be pretty beat this evening. This might be a good night to find an onsen (http://www.ooedoonsen.jp/) to relax in

6 Nov (Thu) - I was planning on leaving this free so people can plan their own adventure on this day. If it's fine it'd be cool to rent a BBQ spot somewhere and have a good time, but if other activities are more desirable that's also OK. BBQ is a good option if people want a "rest day" In the evening go to Shibuya to have a beer at my friend Michiko's bar.

7 Nov (Fri) - If people want to go traditional then a day trip to Kamakura. If people want to stay in Tokyo and do crazy things then Harajuku/Shibuya/Meiji Shrine. Rent mine and Ian's friend Yusuke's restaurant for an epic last evening. Karaoke and Roppongi.

I haven't planned any trips to look at robots, car factories, castles, Nintendo game paradises or anything to do with Music. I really need you guys (over the coming couple of months) to let me know what you'd like to see and do. The above is what I'd plan for myself and I can do this stuff anytime...

I'm all about anything having to do with fashion or modern art or modern architecture.

But, that all sounds good. I want to check out a crazy sex shop at some point.

Also I'm glad I'm finally a moderator and can see the private moderator forum.

Thrash, Luke is coming up to NJ on 10/30, then we are leaving on the morning of 10/31. Arrive in Japan on 11/1. Fly back on 11/7, arrive back in the states on 11/7 (plane lands in Texas). You can come up to NJ too if you'd like to leave with us. We're going to stay up all night until our flight.

Right - there are museums on modern art and some cool bits of architecture around the place (mixed in with some utter crap). If everyone had phones we cal all disperse to favored spot. I'll go to the museums - Akihabara and electronics don't interest me one whit.

That's not the charm of Akihabara for me... but I'm down with museums and galleries.

And you have your days wrong, November 1st is a Sunday.

I've been reading Black Rain, and there are a few places called out in the book.  I'm not sure if they exist anymore, or if they're even real, but these might be worth checking out.

Mitaki Park
Yokogawa Shrine
Yokogawa Station
West Parade Ground
East Parade Ground

I want to go to a hipster bar in Tokyo.  Don't mock me, it's my cultural right!

Title: Re: stuff to do
Post by: underclass on May 07, 2009, 01:27:36 AM
You're welcome to go to Kyoto on your own (or take others if they want to go with you) either at the same time that we go to Nara/Hiroshima, or you could visit there on the way back. Kyoto is very close to Nara and we'll go through it on the train trip down to Hiroshima.

Ian and I have already done Kyoto (and I've been there 4 times with various people) so it's not on the schedule for this trip but I totally recommend you or anyone else bopping off there for a night or two. I'd be happy to help schedule trains/hotels and will give you a crash course in how to get around (REALLY easy).

Hipster bar - why not. The schedule is loose, basically it's what Ian and I had planned and people can take part for what bit/bits they want and I'll help them schedule other stuff. I probably won't even go to Akihabara, Ian can head that excursion.... . Any bar that's "scene-ish" will set you back 700-1000 yen per drink with a probably entry charge on top of that. (Addition) I just looked at your list, they're all shite bars anyway :P
Title: Re: stuff to do
Post by: underclass on May 07, 2009, 01:33:16 AM
Note: if you let me know your scene and budget I can try to find stuff.

Kyle had a surprise when he found out a show would cost about $60 - that's standard here.

I haunt bars and restaurants run by mates of mine. That way I get a good deal, lots to drink for pretty cheap and there's often gambling, karaoke and general carousing after the other patrons go home
Title: Re: stuff to do
Post by: 13chemicals on May 07, 2009, 02:32:40 AM
I'm into trash disco dance club, seventies rock, and super mod glam stuff.  I would love to go to dance club there that doesn't play electronic music but more seventies soul and sixties mod music.  I have no interest in going to a concert in Japan unless it's someone like the 5 6 7 8's, they are rad. $7 for a drink is steep, but now that I think about it I probably shouldn't waste my time getting hammered, because it takes me a whole day to get over a hang over.

I'm going to be sticking with Nick or Mosh, and hopefully I don't get sick of them (or they of me).

But as was told to others, before:  you are free to wander off, but you MUST have a rented cell phone (from Narita airport) if you choose to do so, or you cannot expect us to meet you places.

$7-$10 per drink, that's just like NYC!

I'm surprised Nick hasnt got sick of me... specially on my 2005 trip where I got food poisoning and claustrphobia.

Phone is essential. I'll be getting one.

That is one thing. You will be likely walking around for 5-10 hours on some days. For those of you in the land of big burgers that will be pretty tough. I seriously recommend getting some jogging shoes with really good support. If you can take a few two-hour walks to get used to it that may help.

I was walking up hill, in heels, smoking.  ::)

Everytime I go to New York I walk about 5 miles a day and I'm wearing my regular shitty tennis shoes so I think I will be okay.

PS- Steer me clear of every place that could possibly give me food poisoning.

OK, the food poisoning I got was NOT from a restraunt in Japan.

You know those bakeries that supermarkets have in them? The day I got into Japan in 2005, I bought a slice of packaged pizza from a supermarket near Nick's place in Koiwa. I was going to Nick's place (Nick was at work), and I was hungry,so I stopped at the supermarket to get something to eat. I saw they had packaged pizza slices and I bought one. It was very tasty. But it didnt agree with me. So I got a mild case of food poisoning.

It didnt stop me, but it definately slowed me down for the trip. I think it contributed to the claustro attack I got.

They have chicken sashimi here that I'll avoid for you guys. I had food poisoning once but I went back to the restaurant after and they gave me $1,000 (presumably not to tell anyone) and I've had it a few times since, but it's not something you get unless 3 independent people have recommended the place.

Like anything else over here there's always several options at a restaurant so you can always pussy out and order a beef dish, whiteys!

Does the below answer your question?

Quote
Oh yeah... I almost didn't make it out of Japan. Funny how the smallest thing changes everything.

So, I had no money left in my wallet or pockets, nor any credit card with me. I thought I had 270 yen on my PASMO. Of fucking course I didn't. I followed your directions to the station, and try to enter and can't because there is only 110 left on the pass. Fuck me with a dead man's dick.

Ironically my saving grace was that I forgot to put my $13 USD on your counter before I left. So at least I had SOME currency.

I started panicking and talked with the security guard at the station and ran back upstairs and went to a couple of convenience stores to try and get my cash changed out. They both told me it was Sunday and the banks are closed. ARGH! By this time I feel like fainting dude. I'm really tired from not getting enough sleep, incredibally hot and sweaty from running around with a sweater on, had no breakfast or any water yet (no $$) and checkout time for the hotel had passed.

Finally, about 10:15am I go up to a couple of girls in the station and communicate well enough with them to give them my two USD and get 200 yen! YEAH! So I get on, and fucking get completely lost. (I'd like to blame it on dehydration, hunger, tiredness, anxiety about not getting to the hotel in time for check-out), but it was largely due to me being myself - a fuck up! Hahaha. ANYWAY.

I got to the hotel at 11:30am and they did say "CHECK OUT 10 AM" and sort of scolded me. I quickly packed the few things I hadn't yet, and it was already 11:40am. The time that my Narita Express was just now leaving the station.

Fuck!! I end up having the hotel folks look up the next time, and it ended being 12:40. I booked it to a citibank that had a 24 hour lobby for ATM machines open, got some money, ran to Shinjuku, and the 12:40 was sold out. I got on the 1:10pm. Hahahaha from there it was all uphill.

christ.

So for next time: never leave home without your credit cards and never leave narita without renting a cell.
