Title: Pop music
Post by: tricky on May 28, 2009, 12:12:45 PM
Does anyone here like any pop music? Am I gay for liking some of it?

I like Kylie Minogue a lot, also recently heard Roisin Murphy who is sorta similar to Kylie.

I doubt any of you people like this kind of music though.

I like a lot of pop music but I'm sure there are other genres which are worse that I like.

It's not that I like it, per say; it's that I have to know it, and I have to know how to spin/mix it ...
I'm ok with it when I'm actively listening to it (because I have to), and enjoy it at the time (to prevent myself from punching babies from listening to it) ...

I don't go out of my way to listen to it past that, though ...

I'm not a yes or no although I'm more of a NO over any other choice ...

I dont listen to commercial stations, particularly ones geared to teen audiences. I have no idea what current pop music is.

So that rules out FOX, MMM, NOVA, and a whole bunch of other stations. Especially JJJ.

Lemme guess, its a bunch of watered down black music made safe for white suburban kids. Am I right?

I don't listen to the radio at all, but Amy and her gal-pals listen to some of the new pop stuff. Lady Gaga, Lily Allen, etc. It's not my favourite music by any means but it's a lot more tolerable than pop was ten years ago, that's for sure.
Title: Re: Pop music
Post by: Emperor Reagan on May 31, 2009, 03:43:00 PM
I think pop music is more tolerable, but it's mostly because it's all a straight rip-off of electronic music from 10-15 years ago with "personalities" adding vocals.

Post by: FAH-Q on May 31, 2009, 04:44:58 PM
Yeah, that makes sense.

As for Roisin Murphy, I've only heard one song:

Roisin Murphy - Ramalama (bang bang) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-duPPLhqe0#lq-hq)

But it sounds nothing like Kylie Minogue to me...?

She's pretty popular here right now.

And she probably fits the electronic description. I think.

By the way, did anyone hear Britney's clever new song called If You Seek Amy? Say that title aloud. What does it sound like?

"All the boys and all the girls are begging to 'if you seek amy'"

when you read it, it does not make sense but, it's really:

I always make fun of DJ Blaqstarr when I see him because he wears these big ugly sunglasses all of the time and shows up to events and plays his one song, Supastarr.  I saw one Diplo show where he did like a 15 minute version of Supastarr.

Also, he's kind of a creepy guy.  I was at a big election party at the Ottobar and DJ Blaqstarr was playing his one song there.  Afterwards, he was out on the dance floor just standing still with his arms crossed, so I went over and gave him a little shit.  Then I told my friend she should go over and try to get him to dance.  He danced with her for a bit, then got her number, then invited her backstage.  She said when she got backstage, he pointed her over to the fridge to grab a beer and while she was leaning into the fridge to get one, he pulled his dick out.  She turned around a freaked out - he then tried the "just the tip, just to see how it feels" line on her.  She ran out of the backstage area and spent the rest of the night hiding.

That's the funny part.  The creepy part is that he keeps calling/texting her every couple of months.

I hate that pokerface song but I didnt mind some of last summer's hip hop stuff.

Last april I was standing on south street after getting done some side work for a friend. We were talking with her boss after unloading some of the items back into the warehouse when we heard a medium sized crash. In the intersection across from us, one car rear ended another.
The passenger in the first car sticks his head out, skinny, young black guy and looks at the bumper and starts singing:

DAMAGED! IT'S DAMAGED! I THOUGHT THAT I SHOULD LET YOUUU KNOOOW!
Do-do you got a first aid kit handy?

2009 has been a fantastic year for pop music, certainly the best pop music of this decade.  I can turn on the radio and not want to lobotomize myself, which is a great improvement.

I would attribute this to a few domestic political factors:
1) A black democratic president, for some reason pop music is almost always better during a democratic administration.  1992-2000 vs 2000-2008 is not even up close.  This is a personal theory of mine.
2) Recession makes musicians have to do better music or not sell shit.

But for real 2009 has had lots of good pop and pop/rap and almost all of it is dance able and enjoyable.

Shakira, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z & Kanye.

I don't care how gay this sounds.

That last video is awesome! I've made out on the steps of that building. It's a crust punk hangout after dark. There's an excellent bar down the street featuring 4 floors with balconies overlooking a huge outdoor beergarden. There are also 2 gigantic paper mache people in the garden that were moved from another much shittier bar that I used to go to in my freshman year. I bought the shoes I graduated in and the shoes I'm wearing right now not far from there too.

Wow I miss living in a nice city that's not Camden fucking New Jersey.

I knew a girl in undergrad that came from Shakira's home town. The girl was nuts. She used to roofie herself when we'd go out to raves. I remember her changing in front of me one time before we went out. I asked if I should leave her bedroom, but she said no it's ok. So I just kind of turned to the side to allow her some modesty. In retrospect I guess she was probably trying to sleep with me. It's a pity I'm such a retard with the women because she was rather pretty.

Hate to be a wet towel here...
I'm not sure how one would qualify/quantify the 'improvement' in pop music.  It is still crap.
You poor kids got so used to untalented garbage (come on, the White Stripes?  How did those untalented mongoloids even get a record contract?) that a slight improvement deserves praise?
If someone serves up a steaming hot turd on a plate, and tells me it is dinner, I won't be happy.  If they take the turd away, and replace it with a slab of sod, I will be less displeased with it, but I will still refuse to eat the dirt.
Study music.  Learn a little about song writing.  Read some poetry.  Come back to the billboards, and you'll see it's a 20-segmented toilet.

1) Even if it is crap, which it's not, it's enjoyable, which is what counts.  Pop music has to be appealing to the widest audience possible, by its definition that is what makes it popular.  Most people are not intelligent enough to appreciate the finer points of the difficulties in certain music, so only a certain type of music appeals to them.  What you can notice in pop music, even as an enlightened listener, is that most pop artists, even though they know they are dumbing down their music to their audience, slip in subtle notes, lyrics, and points of style as a reference to you the intelligent listener, and even if they don't, you can still dance to it.

2) I didn't "get used to" anything, I listen to stuff from the Baroque Era to the Modern Era.  I have taken courses on Musicology at University.  Pop music is 1/10th of the music I listen to, I listen to literally everything across the gamut.  And if there's something I haven't ever heard I will listen to it.  I love all music, and I think that the Pop Music of 2009 has been way better than the Pop Music of the last 4-5 years.  Which is something worth celebrating.

3) Of all of the bands to criticize in our day, you choose the White Stripes?  And your criticism is that they aren't talented?  Jesus Christ I don't even know where to go with this one.  That's just a fucking retarded statement from top to bottom.

I kinda like that Black Eyed Peas song. It's unabashedly positive, a going-out song. I like No Doubt's "Hella Good" for the same reason.

I saw an interview with them talking about it, that's what they meant it to be. A little absurd too.

That one's kinda blah. I'm so disappointed in rap these days. Lupe Fiasco's pretty good, but other than him I can't think of any rap since The Game first came out that I've been into recently.

I got started nostalgiaing (good word, btw) when I downloaded the stuff from that Buzz Bin album.
