Title: Impersonating a priest is against the law?
Post by: Zoomie on July 15, 2009, 10:43:38 AM
I mean, I understand the trespass, but since when can't you dress up like a priest and go around blessing people? It's what they do, right?

I think the fact that he was faking being a PRIEST and he was then visiting a POLICE OFFICER in the hospital is what makes this news.  Two authority structures with lots of rules and decorum about appearances.  It said the guy who got arrested has previously attended a seminary so he probably knew all the right things to do and say to be legit.  I'd imagine it is criminal because a priest represents an entire church with his behavior and actions and people generally assume priests to be good and allow them say -- bedside access to a hospitalized police officer.  The worrying part is how the hospital didn't realize the guy was an impostor.  Don't they ID people who come in or anything?  What is to stop ANYONE from just wearing a priest outfit and going to visit an enemy in the hospital and potentially sabotaging their treatment.  The actual offense was trespassing and the priest getup was just the means I guess.

But it's not like he performed a ceremony like a wedding or something that had legal ramifications...

But he didn't get charged with impersonating a priest, he could have been dressed as a priest, a rabbi, a cop, the Joker as a nurse, who knows.  He got charged with using an impersonation to trespass.

I'm a fully, legally ordained minister, however, I'd still not dress up as a priest ...
