Unfortunately, cottage industries have a tendency to try to gouge, either with exorbitant pricing or with augmentation of product,

and let's face it ~ humans make mistakes, stoopid AND otherwise.

Natural selection is basically trial and error.  Lots of reproduction and whatever is most fit for the environment survives.
