My immediate goal is fitness (fat loss, increased work capacity, etc) so the goal is a six workouts per week alternating between a circuit and a cardio workout. I'm going to swap my cardio workout for the tabata protocol.

The circuit routine is mostly body weight exercises... Pushups, squats, lunges, and dips. Back, shoulder, and bicep exercises are handled with resistance bands. Resistance bands provide way better workout than I expected, and are a hell of a lot cheaper than a gym membership.

So far I haven't hit my goal of six workouts per week yet. What happens is either I feel to physically drained and need to take a day off, or work / child rearing / keeping up with the house manages to get in the way. I usually get at least four workouts in per week, but I hate the cardio a lot, and it's usually the workout that gets skipped.

Tabata was a lot more challenging in a good way than a regular cardio routine, and since it takes a lot less time I can see myself finding more reasons why I can squeeze it into my day than finding some way to weasel out of spending 35 minutes doing something I'd rather not.

Last night for the Tabata all I did was run in place as hard as I could, but it was definitely a tough ass workout.

BTW did anyone hear about this?

Fuckin' dropped 275 on his throat. Jesus.

I've just been repping lower weights on the bench since I heard about that a couple days ago.

Holy crap. This is the kind of thing I'm really surprised doesn't happen more often though.

If you are doing sufficiently intense circuit training, you shouldn't need additional cardio.
It's truly a shame I am no longer there to yell at girls to make out with you.

Yeah, there's that thought too... It's definitely contributed to the list of reasons I give myself to skip the cardio workouts.

Still, my cardiovascular system is thrashed and I'd really like to do everything I can to help recover it.

The best workout is the one you do.

Just throw in enough squats and your circuit training should have your heart racing.

Agreed. Still, nothing wrong with doing as much as you can.

I agree. I do a straight cardio workout every so often when I've been lifting too much recently or am just plain hungover

Not to get too aww-shucks-everyone-is-wonderful or anything, but honestly getting any kind of a decent workout on a regular basis just fucking rules. I go through occasional spells where the vicious circle of not doing anything much/not feeling up to doing anything much/so not doing anything much sits me down for a bit, and I always feel like absolute shit within a day or two. Mostly I'm able to work out (meaning gym, hiking, cycling, whatever...) pretty regularly, and even if I'm not losing a bunch of weight or looking like one of those dudes who kick sand in the 90 lb weakling's face on the beach, I feel like I can breathe, I feel like I can pick fairly heavy things up, and I feel like it's not a ridiculous task to move myself around now and then.

Yeah, it kinda freaked me out a little. I've been doing decent sets at over 200 recently, and I'm not nearly macho enough to dismiss 200+ as anything to sniff at. At least not when it comes to having that shit land on your throat.

I guess I'm gonna have to get a spotter if I wanna keep going up in weight.

want

Man, if I owned a gym I could go back and forth between NZ whenever I pleased. Plus I'd get to spend my time improving people's lives.
Fuck it, I wanted some property and now I have it, I also had to have a steady job until wife's business gained traction = done. Consider the next goal locked in lads.

srsly - owning a large gym would be sweet. Eric - why don't you look at what it would take. I bet a lot of places are selling up cheap over there. You could borrow against your partners house to fund it or something, it's gotta be better than paying her power bill

He should buy a curves and let Zoomie run it.

Curves is expanding to Japan and NZ.

I'm excited about this idea now. Which means I'll probably do something without thinking it through enough

Did that Sunday. I vomited, too. Ab work triggered it.

I walked up some stairs earlier this afternoon.  Got pretty winded, it was intense!

Re: working out/exercise/breaking a sweat/etc Reply #81 on: October 06, 2009, 03:15:32 PM
I did an hour and a half just now. 30 mins cardio on the elliptical, keeping my heart rate at about 160 the whole time. Then an hour of lifting - narrow, medium, and wide grip barbell curls, free standing squats, leg press, incline dumbell press, incline situps, butterfly press, and some other shit I don't know the name of. Took my gloves off and took my heart rate a few times, and I reckon I kept it up near 170 for most of the hour.

Now I'm tired.

Oh, and Amy did 80 laps of the half-Olympic size pool at the gym, which is 2 km. I bet she's tired too.

I forgot to take a change of underwear so no cardio today. 60 minutes of just weights by yourself is a lot of goddam weights

I am firewarden at work for my section of the building, and we had a fire drill on Thursday. Walking down 16 flights of stairs had my legs sore for two days.

I also cannot take stairs Kyle.  I'm thinking about buying this $100 treadmill since I am a complainer when it comes to doing exercise when it gets cold outside.

We've been keeping to a good schedule of 4-5 days per week, about an hour and a half per day. This week we took Friday off and went to the beach, which was nice, but I'm pretty psyched to get back in the gym tomorrow.
