It worked earlier today when I searched for the information.  What the site said was that rooms, according to what they found, are $150-$1000 a night if you want to be on or near the beach.

Re: Budgets Reply #31 on: November 18, 2009, 06:41:59 PM
I'll be VERY near the beach and will have ice, beverages and cooking facilities to include a BBQ grill. But you guys are too chickenshit.

whatever man. as long as I'm not getting bitten by bugs I'll crash pretty much anywhere. If we are doing a big house that will be fun, but I can see this turning into a whine-fest about when/how much/who pays what and sleeps where...

Re: rental cars - definitely a good idea, and they can be shared to save cost. Those of you who already drive on the left will probably have an easier time getting used to driving down here.

Also, scooters are useless as general transport, and you wouldn't wanna ride at night here with them. But it might be a helluva fun day out if a shitload of us rented scooters and zipped around the island, seeing different areas and beaches and shit.

Everybody who drives on the right already has experience driving on the left.  So it's only the local rules and style that would be an issue.

Re: Budgets Reply #41 on: November 18, 2009, 07:29:11 PM
I want to have my own room.  I didn't mind sharing a room with Brook when we were in Hiroshima, but that was because we had bunk beds.  I don't think I could have shared a double bed with her.  If I decide to go I could figure out my own accommodations if we do not want to collectively figure it out.  I do however prefer having someone responsible in charge of this since I tend to just go with the flow or go balls out with vacationing, which are tactics that don't always get things done.

Re: Budgets Reply #42 on: November 18, 2009, 07:51:14 PM
I'm definitely happy to be Mr. Responsible once I don't end up having to pay for a bunch of stuff when people don't turn up!

The idea of a big villa is great in theory, but might work better for 4-5 people than for a bunch more than that. The idea of a bunch of relatively inexpensive hotel rooms (in the same hotel) might be even better for everyone to have their privacy and still be able to hang out with the group if they wanted.

'In the same' hotel breaks down, somewhat, with people not committing to the trip at the same time (?).

Sorry Si but im going to ask again, Is inland better value for money ?  (excluding all the beach/view stuff, just pure space and comfort is my interest here)

I'll sleep in a hammock on zoomie's boat if he brings it down.

Otherwise, I don't really care where I sleep.

There are a few categories of hotel here:

1. Expensive, big, luxurious ones on the beach.
2. Cheaper, less extravagant ones on the beach.
3. Cheap and cheerful, way less extravagant ones off the beach.

There basically aren't any budget-because-they're-not-on-the-beach-but-luxurious hotels here. If anyone's gonna build a "nice" hotel, they're gonna build it right on the beach.

I reckon between types 2 and 3 we should be able to find something that'll work for everyone. And wherever you go, you'll get comfort. Maybe not space, but why come to Antigua to stay cooped up in a hotel room?

Everybody who drives on the right already has experience driving on the left.  So it's only the local rules and style that would be an issue.

BTW what do you mean?

On the boat works cuz there are no bugs. On land, you sure as shit will care where you sleep.

I don't think you could have a hotel here and not provide A/C. But that said if you were here on a working vacation and wanted to spend a little more I might have just the place for you. It's not right on the beach, but about 2 mins drive from one, and the A/C there is fierce. It's more of a businessman's hotel.

Never been to India, but no, it's nothing like I imagine it would be there. Roads here tend to be crappy and full of potholes and with wandering livestock and people who don't use turn signals and people who stop in the middle of the road to talk to someone etc. It's dealable with, but easier if you're not also trying to remember to drive on the left SIDE OF THE ROAD.

Lots of options. Inland is cheaper and we'll rent cars... I assume there are taxi's to take money from travelers as well. Add $10 per day per person to rent a car. I don't know what food and drink costs but a villa will be far cheaper because we can cook or do BBQ etc.

The a/c thing was more of a 'i aint sitting on the beach with a laptop' type thing.

I meant more along the lines of the options presented.  I'm not planning to sleep on a park bench or passed out drunk on a lawn to get eaten alive.

Re: Budgets Reply #51 on: November 19, 2009, 08:39:11 AM
Let's bear in mind that unless I pay for a transit slip for the entire time we're there I will be anchored offshore. Of course, we could share the cost of a slip, someone could have the private berth, there's the drop down setee, a crew berth, I could rig two hammocks on deck, and we'd have AC in the cabin but that would still put us ashore where there will be bugs. And I don't relish the thought of partying until 2am and then trying to pilot a zodiac back out to anchor in a drunken state where I wouldn't even consider driving a car. So it's a bit of a pickle...

I will go if we get a villa and Nick does all the cooking.  I will do my best to be topless on the beach at all times in exchange for this service.  Also, I do not want to stay with Luke.  Just don't.  Don't want to stay in the same house as him and I don't really want to be on the same beach with him at the same time where I can see him.  I know for a fact that hip will not come if banal goes.  Banal knows why.  I know most of you like to avoid the way it is, but I guess I'm the only one who wants to make the rest of you face the way it is.  I can go on this trip if it is held between the dates of 1/08/2011-1/16/2011.  I would like to know sooner than later if these dates are going to cemented in all of our schedules.  Chop Chop!

No actually I've been considering broaching this subject.

Tricky, is there going to be a problem between us? I've been behaving myself of late, not because of this trip but because it was brought to my attention by mutual friends what a supreme dickhead I've been with little or not reason and because it's the right thing to do. Also I've been compared to Tru, something I'm not sure how I feel about.

If the idea of being around me for a few days completely repulses you, I can make other arrangements. I just think we should be open about this. So please speak your feelings.

I am fine with the dates of 1/08/11-1/16/11.  Though I'd probably head down there on that Thursday rather than the 8th.

I would also be fine with sharing a villa with people.  The point about partying and getting back offshore at 2 AM is a good one and probably a good reason just to stay on land.

Zoomie, it'll be fine.

I think 1/08/2011-1/16/2011 will be ok for me. Wow I can't believe we are planning a trip so far in advance! Hopefully I won't be dead or living in a cult in Mexico by then.
