gaming is just efficient cash for hours hobby.
That's exactly how I look at it. Retirement is going to rock. I'm stockpiling shit I have no time for now.

Actually anything suda51 touches is pure gold. Check out Contact next.

I'm currently playing FF1 believe it or not. I'd gotten through 80-85% of it just before college and now I'm starting it from scratch. Cartridge-based gaming is the only way to be, guys. Fuck this compact disk technology blah. Cartridges!

It's more fun than I thought it would be when I first started it.  Now I have to go after some asshole named Crom.

Right now I'm playing FF13.  It's better than I thought it would be.  Really fast-paced combat that makes you have to pay attention or die, but it has some of the crap from recent JRPG's that I don't really like, but it's not so off-putting as Star Ocean was.

Re: Games Reply #39 on: March 23, 2010, 07:59:05 PM
Oh OK, Mr. Fancy-pants. Do you think you're 13 times better than me then? Is that it?
...

But yeah, I actually heard FF13 is quite good though.

Out of curiosity, have you played all the previous FFs?
I cast no judgment on others in this area. I know there's no continuity of storyline involved or anything, but for me personally I'll play them in order or not at all. Most people I know who are fans of the series started with FF7 (or sometimes FF6) and never were interested enough to go back to the earlier games. I'll be playing an English translation of FF2 next.

Re: Games Reply #40 on: March 23, 2010, 08:29:12 PM
Yeah, I was around when the original Final Fantasy was brought over on NES, and I've played every one of them since, though I only played FF11 for a month because I hate MMO's.

You're right, there is NO continuity of story line between the games at all, which is part of the theme of the series, the only exceptions being the FF7 spinoffs and FFX-2 (which actually was a better game than FFX, gameplay-wise).  But playing them in order is good, too, for getting into the feel of the series, though If I were you I'd only bother with the ones that were brought to the US (1,4,6,and 7-13) and I might skip over 9 and 11 altogether.  Nine was completely banal and forgettable, and 11 was a freaking MMO that every one of the worst qualities of the genre, in spades.

Edit:  For clarification's sake, let me show you Cloud, the protagonist of FF7:

Squall, from FF8, my favorite of all the FF games.  Yes, that is a .44 Magnum made into his fucking sword.

And this is the protagonist(fag) of FF9.........

Re: Games Reply #42 on: March 24, 2010, 01:43:42 AM
Yeah I've seen a lot of FF7 through my brothers' playing the game. I actually played the demo as well. That's what I keep reminding myself of as I wade through battle after battle after painful level-up battle against BONEs and GrWOLFs. It's all worth it eventually. Anyway FF1 isn't that bad. It gives me nostalgia for Dragon Warrior. In fact I think I may finish that series up after I'm finished with Final Fantasy.

Speaking of such 8-bit joy, by the way, have you heard of the game "3D Dot Game Heroes"? It looks fantastic. It hurts me as a Nintendo fan to say it but the PS3 really has some quality games. I've been drooling over Heavy Rain for months now. Quantic Dream puts out a SOLID effort every time.

Re: Games Reply #43 on: March 24, 2010, 12:01:13 PM
I downloaded and played ff1 and ff2 on my old cell for $1, yay.

Also this thread made me get Plants vs Zombies, it's fucking brilliant
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

Re: Games Reply #44 on: March 24, 2010, 03:03:19 PM
And by "get" I hope you mean "play for free at Popcap," yes?

Re: Games Reply #45 on: March 24, 2010, 10:49:24 PM
nah, I downloaded it onto my iphone. I think it was about $3, pity I clocked it in only a few days. Good idea for a game though and I'll buy any expansion levels.

I don't have time to pirate things, if I want to watch, listen or play something I'm willing to pay for it to work instantly with no dithering around. I'm happy with this arrangement because it means I have more money than time, which is more fun than the opposite used to be. I think the only thing I've pirated since leaving university was a copy of the Adobe suite for my now wife, and even then I took beer over to a mates house who owed me a favor and he got it for me while I sat on his couch playing nintendo and talking to his girlfriend. Likewise I wont jailbreak my iphone because why would I tinker with something that makes calls, does email, plays music and games and Apple updates the software for me?

You'll enjoy not being a student I think.

Re: Games Reply #46 on: March 25, 2010, 03:10:35 AM
I actually have grown more interested in getting the legit copies of things as I've grown older. I have strange prejudices. Console games, especially cartridge-based games I want in the hardcopy. Some music I want in the hardcopy version too. I really like LPs for instance. But PC games or most movies/TV shows... I'll pirate those often.

No question I'll be happier when school is fucking done though.

'd you ever lay your hands on that weird Russian game you were after?

Re: Games Reply #48 on: March 25, 2010, 03:49:19 AM
I just scored 5 games for the Commodore C16 from some dude in Germany... pretty happy, coz they all be rare as.

Nah, I found a site that claimed they'd ship to the USA but then when I actually tried to pay the people canceled my order and told me they don't ship abroad. I asked them if there were any places they knew that did ship to the USA and the guy gave me a list of places. I tried them all and none ship to the USA. I considered getting stuff shipped to relatives in Hungary, but the whole thing is such a hassle I started to lose interest. Just recently I started to search again though. My current strategy is to get the game through Lithuania where it's sold in hard-copy under yet another name. The game has no dialogue so it's not like it'll be unplayable regardless of where I get it from.

I've actually played the game after purchasing it via Steam despite my internal revulsion, but my hard-drive died this X-mas and so I've lost the game again. I fucking hate video game DRM. It's shocking to me that I've paid money for a game and now I have to go cringing back to the sellers to get it again. Give me the physical game. If I break it then I'll buy a new one. I don't like any of this long-term rental/subscription bullshit that we have today.

Anyway my current madness takes the form of trying to get a game from Brazil. Again, I speak no Portuguese and the kid I'm trying to buy from is writing to me in Portuguese slang and 1337-speak which makes my job as a translator triple-hard. It's the steal of a life-time for the game - a rare undumped SNES ROM - that he's selling for only 40 reals. The thing is that he's also unwilling to ship to the USA so I need a contact in Brazil. I'm trying to work something out right now but it's beginning to get tricky.

Re: Games Reply #50 on: March 25, 2010, 07:22:36 PM
There are companies in the world that re-ship, mate. People us them to package purchase to look like gifts and avoid duty, or bundle several items together and save on shipping.

Re: Games Reply #51 on: March 25, 2010, 09:41:20 PM
Every time I do this I think it's the last time forever, though. Nobody in their right mind would make a habit of dealing with people of so many different countries. The first interaction I had like this was in trying to buy a bottle of Loch Lomond from Germany. That ended in disaster as the German dude marked the bottle as whiskey and it was summarily "destroyed" (read drunk by customes officers) at the Canadian border. I should have learned my lesson then. Now I have a spam box overflowing with Russian garbage and nothing to show for it.

I just sent payment to the guy in Brazil. Hopefully this ends well.

Ok, I don't get all the hype about that Batman Arkham Asylum game.  I've been trying to play it for two days now and it's boring as shit.  I guess if you're really mega-into Batman or something and stain your pants every time you see the batman logo it might be good, I've just never really been into Batman.

I also bought a cheap 1st Gen Ipod Touch on Ebay last week and I've been playing around with apps.  I downloaded the GTA:Chinatown Wars app for iphone/itouch but it was nigh unplayable so I deleted it.

I dont pirate a lot but i dont always see the point in paying for things unnessecarily.sp. especially on the ipod. Srsly.

When we first got oblivion, elder scrolls, we pirated it from a friend. And I loved that game enough to actually go out and buy it.

Edit: I'm on half term now as well (hence I actually have time/the patience to post on forums and soon to play on the computer.) soo i'm gonna work on completing the mr bean game i got for my bday. xD
