Could buy this and with a little clean up it will be like this or we could just start doing charters at $1000/week.

Anyone?

Uhm, he means "K" as in "thousand dollars", not what you may be able to be fronted in "Kilos" of meth ...

Then again, now that I think of it, if you could unload a kilo of meth Zoomie'd be quite well off ...

Ah sorry. It was the same boat as in the second link, but had taken on a little water. It was listed locally here for one sixth it's actual value. Sold quick.

Nice boat. But not enough hoes in the pics for my liking.
Have you ever considered venturing into the sea freight business?

Re: Anybody got $25K to invest? Reply #14 on: March 14, 2010, 01:08:13 PM
Thanks. I think I have the one I want.

Pics of sister ship here.

1965 Grampian Classic 31 Ketch. Grampian Marine made about 140 of them in Ontario, Canada, but only a few were ketch rigged and only three or four still exist today. I'm going to have the Atomic 4 gasoline engine removed, replace it with 72volts of 220mAh batteries and 30hp of electric motor, charged with either shore power, a generator mounted below decks, solar power, a small wind generator mounted on the stern or any combination thereof. Never buy fuel again and 4 hours of steady motoring on demand. For less money than a small diesel replacement.

She was abandoned, needs only some cleanup and paint. So I got her for less than 10% of her value.

So, you're asking yourself how do I come up with $2000 for the boat, $3000 for the auxiliary upgrade and maybe another $1000 for electronics? It's a simple matter of shifting assets. I have this:

Which I can sell for $3500. I spent $2000 to buy the Grampian and another $1000 to buy this:

A 1970 Swedish made Albin Vega, once cleaned up, rigged and launched is worth $5000 easily. Use the remaining $500 to buy an outboard and cleaning supplies.

Then turn the $5000 back into the Grampian 31. GPS, Stereo with Satellite radio and weather reports, maybe a radar set.

I have never enjoyed a job that wasn't really a job more than I do this...

30hp seems a little underpowered, but if it relies mainly on sails I guess it's a pretty good trade off for only when needed.

Re: Anybody got $25K to invest? Reply #24 on: March 19, 2010, 07:00:04 AM
You can't sail into or out of a slip. And you can't sit there with sails up waiting for a drawbridge to open (Yeah, I'm in a protected creek off the bay, behind a drawbridge). I use a 6hp on my 22 foot Catalina. Hull speed for this boat is probably about 10 knots. Fifteen horsepower will get you half of that. So you motor away from the slip, put the finishing touches on the rig, pull up to the drawbridge, drop a mushroom anchor off the stern, crack open a water bottle, maybe make a few phone calls, and when the bridge goes up all you need do is raise three sails and hoist that mushroom and you're free.

That's pretty much my Saturday morning.

Re: Anybody got $25K to invest? Reply #25 on: March 19, 2010, 09:09:41 AM
15 = half of 10.

You have 6... So 3 knots is the tide is netural or working for you.

and that's at full throttle... right ?

Is that safe ? To only have 3 knots of engine power ?   Seriously.  I know having something is better than othing... but...  is what ou have the 'normal' ?

Hang on, now i understand how you drifted to beached that day... I think. (cant remember if the engine cut out, if it did I retract.)

Re: Anybody got $25K to invest? Reply #26 on: March 19, 2010, 05:25:31 PM
It did but the boat I was in had so much free board that unless you were running downwind or caught in a lee you were really at the mercy of any wind over 15 kts. I turned abeam with 1/4 mile to open water, and only 1/4 mile from shore. The motor quit and we yawed to the beach before we cleared the point. And as I found out later that happens once a week so I got over it.

Now you can too.

Re: Anybody got $25K to invest? Reply #28 on: March 19, 2010, 06:11:14 PM
I didn't mean for you to take that badly.

In the simplest terms, an auxilliary is for getting in and out of the marina safely and for short trips to open water. You'll never outrun a gale unless you catch a beam reach on the leading edge of a storm and get out of it's way, and that's kind of a dangerous gamble. An auxiliary SHOULD be able to push the boat at hull speed but the Albin Vega was constructed for sailing in the North Atlantic, by Swedes. They LIKE sailing in gale forces. They'll heave to in a 27 foot boat in 30 foot seas and go to sleep. The inboards they put in Vegas never took them to hull speed and only had a useful life of about 700 hours.

Horsepower in electric terms is a completely different animal than internal combustion. You don't just factor the torque, speed and RPM of the engine, you factor the output of the motor, the reduction of the drive, the RPMs and the design of the propeller. So even though an Etek motor is only rated at 15 peak horsepower, it could potentially have the equivalent push of a 30-45 horsepower gas or diesel engine.

I have no intention of sailing her more than 5 miles off the coast and I probably won't leave the Chesapeake. And this boat will be sold almost immediately to finance the refit of a larger boat so she'll be fine with it. There is also the possibility of combining the Etek at 48VDC, a battery bank and a small Honda or Subaru driven generator into a hybrid of sorts.

I'm having fun spending my afternoons chatting over beers with marine engineers.

While I understand everything abut the motor side of your post.

The propeller side I dont.  I understand the effects of geometry... but i have never understood why people choose diff types, somebody tried to explain to me once ( I worked with a kiwi who sailed over from NZ on a 22 footer (did the rest of the south pacific to)) but we never got past the the concept of it being a bit like changing the gearing of an engine... you know, being carefull not to stress your motor buy asking your prop to move too much water... we were too drunk by then.

but I got the basics right ? (in relation to low powe situations i mean, i feel larger engines would be less concered with the issue).
