a decade is a lot of "what have you been up to?"
mostly aging as well as possible and cultivating my special brand of bubbly bitterness.

Broad strokes, silly. Educated? Fulfilling work? Long term relationships? Location?

i have a bachelor's degree in history, which is mostly useless, i am currently studying education and working on getting my teaching certification. I am an assistant teacher to a history professor and I substitute in a high school when I can (because it is hilarious). I worked at various banks for 8 years and had a fit and ran out of the last one where I worked which was in Florida. Things are better now. I have lived in Florida, North Carolina, Montreal (for a second), and Vermont. I was married for a few years, and right before I turned 30 I decided I was not terribly happy with that arrangement and got divorced then returned to Maine where I currently live alone in a tiny apartment just for me. I mostly ride my bike and grow my vegetables and read books and write papers and grade papers and whatnot.

My sister worked at banks for several years, got divorced,  then ran off and became a minister.

Back to Maine, eh?  How far or close to where you grew up?

I live about 30 miles from where I grew up, tho the circumstances are different enough that it feels a world away. I also traveled a bunch and lived a few other places in between, but there is a weird gravity here that works on my brain.

I'm currently about 14 (road) miles from one of the places I grew up, 670 miles from another, and 3850 miles from the other (as the crow flies... if crows could fly that far).
ever tried. ever failed. no matter. try again. fail again. fail better.

Maybe 40-50 mi from where I was born.

Less than 3 mi from where I actually grew up.

A good deal of people never leave their state of birth; even fewer leave their city ...
I''ll have to look at the statistics of that one ...

I live in the same city where I grew up. I substitute at the high school I graduated from. I didn't want to move back, but I did. I have come to learn that there are worse places to be, even though I don't love it here.

I live about 12500 miles from where I was born... I currently live less than a mile from the place where I suffered my teenaged years. I hate Nunawading, sooner I can get back to Blackburn South the better.

Re: It feels like 1996 all over again. Reply #198 on: October 25, 2013, 01:20:22 PM
I live 2,200 miles from the place I consider home...though only 40 miles from where I was actually born.

I am about 150 miles from where I grew up. I would move back there but there are no jobs and too much alcohol and substance abuse.

There isn't shit here. I'm going back to MD in a few weeks for work and the holidays. Then I'm either moving to Orlando or Virginia.Veterans Admin advisor says I can become an X-ray Tech with about18 months of school. Thinking about that... Hard.

Schooling and work are usually two different things.
Even an advanced degree in a subject is little guarantee of actually finding work in that field. But historically rank and file medical workers are one of a group that usually can find work.

I'm about 160 miles from my place of birth but England is quite small and that's like half the length of the country.

Care workers are always in demand. 18 months is a long time; you could have two babies in the same time.
