My new (used) car on: March 07, 2014, 12:34:20 PM
I just picked up another used car last week. No more riding my mountain bike in the rain.

It's a 2000 Honda Civic in great condition. It was stolen from the owner about two weeks ago and she said "fuck it" and went out and bought a new car.
So when the police brought it back a few days ago it was no longer needed. The car dealership was only offering $500 trade in on it so I was able to pick it up for $625. Hell of a nice car. The thieves broke off the antenna and scraped the CIVIC badge off the back for some stupid reason, maybe just to make it look different. One of the wheel covers looks like it was to close to a camp fire, and the plates were missing. Apparently they tried to sell it to someone and that someone got busted driving through a parking lot.

But really it is a nice car and runs great.

Looks like this.

Oh yeah it only has 174,000 miles and I got a thick ass folder of repair and maintenance records with it. It was meticulously maintained 'by the book' since new.
It has lifetime alignment and spin balancing still in effect thought I doubt I will need those services. It was just certified by a professional garage and had it's fluids changed. It passed smog with flying colors. For a small car it is fucking great.

Another deal like that? You mean you have had such an option before ? I have had a great deal of opportunities over the years.
I had a Toyota Corolla I paid $400 for and it was a great car, back in the 70s I drove it over the Altamont from the central valley back and forth to Livermore every day.

That totally changed my mind about imports.

I drive an Accord. 30mpg, can get to Thrash's house on less than a tank (360 miles) and all the way to DC on two gas stops (1100 miles). Great car.

Wow, that's a sad story.

I don't know what engine it has to tell the truth.
It runs really well so I haven't thought about it yet.

Re: My new (used) car Reply #8 on: March 08, 2014, 10:04:34 AM
Oh and the other neat thing is that when I told my mother about the new car, she was amazed at how little second hand vehicles cost here (especially compared to Antigua, where they're super expensive). She's coming to visit us for a week in April and another week in May, at the beginning and end of her holiday around Europe. She had booked a rental car for each week, and figured out that renting a car for a week each time would add up to basically the cost of a used car. So she started looking at cars near us, found one she really likes, and Robert's yer father's brother. Deal is, she buys the car, we pay for the tax and insurance, then she gets to use it when she's here and my sister and her partner get to use it when they come visit later in the year. Pretty fucking sweet, really. My dad went and test-drove it and said it's in great shape, it's a 1997 Toyota Rav4 3 door with just over 100,000 miles on it. 2 litre engine in a teeny vehicle, so it's pretty lively too. We pick it up Tuesday.

There should be a metal plaque with the engine number and size inside the engine bay, if your Hondas are anything like the Japanese versions.

Now that sounds like a sweet deal.

There wasn't any specification under the hood that I could see but I did a VIN lookup and apparently it has a 1.6 L, SOHC, MFI. Oh and it was built in Canada.

I did a bit of googling and it seems like yours might have the D16Y8 engine, which seems to be VTEC. If so that's awesome. Where does it redline, and does it feel like it really takes off at 5600 rpm?

It seems it may be the dx rather than the cx but anyway it doesn't have a tach and I think it's just a basic model. I haven't had it on the highway yet but it's very zippy around town.

Should be more than that, unless the US versions are way different to the UK or J-Spec versions. The equivalent model and year and engine size UK version gets around 40 MPG.

Could be the additives and other garbage we allow in our fuel which other countries may restrict.

Re: My new (used) car Reply #18 on: March 12, 2014, 03:11:46 PM
Plus all the California specific smog equipment and engine settings.

I've put 80 miles around town on it since I got it and it's still better than 3/4 full, but I don't know how much the tank holds yet. It was full when I picked it up.

Maybe, don't know yet. It has an owner manual, I'll look it up later today.

It should do very well out on the highway. Though I seldom have occasion to do highway driving these days.

<edit>
Ok I had a chance to read through the owners manual and it has an 11.9 USg tank. Should be able to fill it up well under fifty bucks

Re: My new (used) car Reply #22 on: March 13, 2014, 10:34:44 PM
Well Ive put 90 miles around town on it now and it is still a bit above 3/4 full that can't be bad. That fucking Jaguar could only do 13 mpg at best.

I know there is a little head room when the tank is full before the meter starts dropping but still.

It has a trailer hitch receiver and I noticed a couple days ago that three of the four nuts were missing. I Think the guy that stole it tried to remove that as well. Last bolt started turning so he grabbed it with pliers and wasted the threads. Couldn't get the last nut off so gave up. I put all new nuts on it yesterday Well three nuts and tightened the remaining one and am looking to get a small trailer so I can haul lawn equipment and such. It doesn't have the lighting socket though. I found one wire that was ripped out might have gone to a socket originally, but I can work that out.

I also worked out all the details on installing a hidden kill switch today so maybe it won't get stolen again.
