It's hard to go back once you quit. 

IF you're going to go, stay in.  Once you start paying the student loan payments, it's too terrifying to contemplate taking on more student loans for the additional education. 

It's especially terrifying when you consider that with many phds, you'll be overqualified for everything except academia.  And there are a lot more people than jobs in the academia.

Nope.  And glad I didn't.  Almost all of the research gigs people I know have taken after their doctorates are for DoD contractors.  I won't do that sort of work for ethical/moral reasons.  The people who I know of who stayed in academia are spending 5-10 years in post-doctoral programs, then maybe getting a lecturer position but not tenure track stuff.

I'm interviewing for a position with a DoD contractor tomorrow.  It's exactly what I want to be doing.  I have no ethics/morals/qualms.  I have a few, but none that cannot be lowered for a starting salary that's almost twice as much as I ever made at any previous job.
