Title: bikes
Post by: The Geek on July 22, 2009, 04:07:50 PM
my friends just starting biking through nice, flat asphalt along the river here and I'd like to join them. Real leisurely ride with a picnic basket - no serious mountain inclines or rocks and shit like I did last week. I need a new bike, or at least to fix the old one, since I got hit by that car in 2006 and mangled the back wheel.

Anyways... I'd like an old style schwinn coaster maybe with some kind of breaks that arent the pedal kind. Real retro cute shit. (feel free to insert an eye roll here)

Moving on...

here's the one I've found target selling:

[img/]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_moVN_DcZGRM/SBT9znae5OI/AAAAAAAAA2s/lgWwNaKH1iY/s1600-h/schwinn+cruiser.jpg[/img]

http://www.target.com/Ladies%E2%80%99-Schwinn-26-Roxie-Cruiser/dp/B000KZ4MUY/sr=1-7/qid=1248292388/ref=sr_1_7/181-2518786-0459253?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Aschwinn&page=1 (http://www.target.com/Ladies%E2%80%99-Schwinn-26-Roxie-Cruiser/dp/B000KZ4MUY/sr=1-7/qid=1248292388/ref=sr_1_7/181-2518786-0459253?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Aschwinn&page=1)

Reviews are mixed. All agree that the people at target are morons and you should get a real person to assemble and tune up the bike. Some say its a great bike for what I need, some say it's shit. $169.00 isnt a bad price but is a bargain, or am i getting what I paid for?

Emp, Lucky and whoever else knows bikes - what are your thoughts on this bike?

If this bike is pure shit... where can I go to get a cute vintagey-bike that wont break the bank?

I guess it depends on what you mean by breaking the bank.  If I were going to ride a cruiser/utility/whatever style bike, I would buy this one:
http://www.konaworld.com/09_africabikeone_u.cfm (http://www.konaworld.com/09_africabikeone_u.cfm)

It's significantly more expensive (~twice the price) than the Target bike, but higher quality.  It'll last longer and hold up better to abuse.

I would actually go slightly cheaper if that's too far out of hand price wise:  http://www.target.com/Schwinn-Legacy-Cruiser-Bike-26/dp/B00160GL60/sr=1-5/qid=1248295110/ref=sr_1_5/175-8951718-0091713?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k:cruiser%20bike&page=1 (http://www.target.com/Schwinn-Legacy-Cruiser-Bike-26/dp/B00160GL60/sr=1-5/qid=1248295110/ref=sr_1_5/175-8951718-0091713?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k:cruiser%20bike&page=1)

With an inexpensive bike assembled by people that may or may not be very good at what they're doing, I think it's probably better to err towards simpler geometry and complexity.  It's also 1 speed - if you can deal with that, you'll save yourself a lot of headache with a cheap shifting system, like the other one has.

Youre getting what you pay for. At 43 lbs for a steel frame bike...thats thin steel.

At the price your looking at ( the price of this bike ) you buy what you think looks good and has the features ( gear ratios/breaks/riding postion/seat(seat is really important)) that you need/want.

Get out into the local bike stores and ask for what you want.....and ask for the brochures.

if you really like this bike....check other places to buy it first....you might get it a bit cheaper.

edit: forgot your american $ wise. 169 is a good target price...not a good bike store price.

you need to get to a proper store and sit on some bikes.

edit2: if you can afford them http://www.feltracing.com/08/thumb.asp?catid=1504,1519 (http://www.feltracing.com/08/thumb.asp?catid=1504,1519)

i love felt. I ride http://www.feltracing.com/08/product.asp?catid=1504,1525&pid=8717 (http://www.feltracing.com/08/product.asp?catid=1504,1525&pid=8717)     btw. if anybody cares.

I can not afford either of those bikes unless I land a sweet ass gig, but man I love them both! On the bikes homeless joe posted there was a red one and i LOVE IT. Love the one you posted, too emp. The basket and all! Wish it was an uber girly color. Or green.

I could start saving and fix my tire in the meantime. Could have cute bike by next summer!

Nay to target. yay to saving!

Thanks guys!

Also, watch craigslist.  You can sometimes find really good deals on there.  Cruisers are probably a little harder to come by because hipsters love them, but sometimes all you need is a couple of hours of work and $50 to get a decent bike.

Cruisers are pretty fun. Some friends and I went on a beer run in Reno with cruiser bikes. My friend Nick got stuck with the pink one, but he had the basket for the beer so nobody gave him any shit!

I have a yellow Univega Range Rover 18.

It's a nice bike but the frame is almost too big for me.
I used to have a nice Specialized hard rock but it got stolen.

I bought the Specialized for $9.98 at the thrift store.
I paid $25 for the UniVega at a different thrift store.

I would never buy a fucking new bike.

Spin the wheels and if they are still true after years of abuse it's a good bike.

You can tell by the wording that this must have been an otherwise very sweet, relatively harmless hipster chick.

"I hope my bike takes you straight to hell." makes it.

There are people here who steal bikes from hipsters and then sell them on Craigslist.  My friend used to punch hipster kids and take their Ipods.  Hipsters are easy to steal from.

It's like taking candy from an 18-35 year old baby.
