Not exactly. According to publication H6120 on injury prevention, the definitive study on dog bite cases in North America by the University of Minnesota Department of Environmental Health Services, between 1979 and 1998, a male dog, unneutered and kept chained is three times more likely to bite. The study also showed that pit bulls and pit bull mixed breeds were responsible for 76 out of 238, or 32% of all reported dog bites while comprising less than 15% of the known domestic dog population. And they have become and even more popular breed since this study was published. However the CDC stopped tracking dog bites by breed in 1998 so a modern study cannot be completed. Very convenient.

However, based on my 22 years experience in animal rescue and the pet trade, it is not the dog. It is the breed.

There are so many in my neighborhood that I sometimes wish I was back at the DC shelter euthanizing them again. They are a dangerous and worthless breed as family dogs go and no one will convince me otherwise. Besides that I would like to see the punkass wiggers who own them cry like little bitches.

Hey Hilder! Sorry for your loss. Yeah he's got a couple. And Angus is doing most of his training for us. At 11 weeks he's just about house trained.

I tend to agree. I've met some "nice" pitbulls, as well as meeting pitbulls that seemed nice for ages then flipped the fuck out. But the vast majority of my pitbull experiences have led me to believe that they're generally bad news. Pun intended.

Not true, man. My dick has two pitt-bulls. One of them, Kilo is a retired champion hog hunter. a trained killer and she is the sweetest doggie. She loves to be rubbed and loves to chew on her rubber bone.
Unless she sees a hog. then you better watch out. He has another one, Toby and he is solid muscle and just a massive dog, but sweet as pie. He is a big baby. and so beautiful.

Did you know that they're called AMERICAN Pit Bulls, for a reason?  They were bred during the '20's, i believe it was, to be America's Pet Dog ~ strong, beautiful, loyal, obedient ~ ALL of the great traits that a good dog should have.  In fact, they aren't even a registered breed, i think 'cuz they're a mix of so many other breeds.

(Sorry ~ i'm a stoner who is stoned, and i'm just trying to remember what i was reading when a different PB thread came up)

We all love our bombs.

Hell even cats can get evil in their old age.

The difference is a cat can only inflict so much damage, a pit bull will fucking KILL you for no reason if it simply decides it can.

That's close, but I think you need to change it to "A pit bull CAN kill you if it decides it wants to."

Re: So. We got another dog Reply #74 on: August 25, 2009, 09:37:55 PM
Yeah, two things:

One of them, Kilo is a retired champion hog hunter. a trained killer. He has another one, Toby and he is solid muscle and just a massive dog

Yes, my neighbors all have one or two of them and when they walk down the street with them, they look so sweet and gentle. Until they see another dog and they go berzerk. So my neighbors are aware: They lose control of the dog, I shoot it. It gets loose and I see it, I shoot it. It gets close enough to my dogs, I shoot it. They blink wrong at me after I kill their dogs, I shoot them.

Also, Pits are mutts. They were bred for fighting when dog fighting was legal. I don't give a fuck what anyone found on the internet, that's fact. No one with any common fucking sense considers them a "breed" of dog.

Look up the name James Soto. He was killed in the next town when I lived in California in the 80s. He set foot on his neighbors property and two pitts tore him apart. He was 5. His mother was a friend.

They should be extinguished, all of them.

My family owned two pitbulls when I was growing up. One of them got out of our yard and got in a fight with another dog and the other dog got injured. My parents paid for it's vet bills. The other pitbull never gave us any problems at all and he also got out of our yard a couple times. They were both around people and children (obviously) and they never bothered any people, except to jump up and lick them on the face.

I'm a believer that it's in how you raise the dog more than anything. My parents weren't abusive to our dogs.

I was bitten by a dog once as a child- by a chow chow. I'm also kind of afraid of German shepards. Sean and his mom had a German shepard and there were two seperate instances with that dog where I felt nothing but pure fear. Then again, they did put him through police dog training school.

That, and knowing the (sorry, Zooms) breeds needs, as far as room to run and play, and what sorts of work they are made for, so that they can do what they were meant to do, sort of.  Like herding, or protecting, or hunting, or whatever.

That's sort of weird, considering the other posts i've been making tonight ~ utilizing things in the manner of which they were meant to be used.

Be that as it may, it DOES work for dogs ~ they're happier, healthier and better adjusted.

Herding? I guess I may be way off, but wouldn't a pit bull make a horrible sheep dog? Sheep dogs tend to nip to get their point across, I have a hard time believing a pit bull would just nip. As far as I've ever seen, they hardly even bark compared to most other dogs, and tend to just full-on attack if they actually choose to do so. It's what makes me so nervous about them.

Cute puppy!  I prefer smaller dogs...just cause I hate bed hogs.  I had a boxer that would kick me out of my own bed....never again.  Oh and yes the older dog always teaches the puppy with EVERYTHING.  My mom's shi tzu trained our newest dog to bite us when clipping his nails.  Damn dogs.

Perhaps think larger...  Cattle?  Horses?  Even if it WAS sheep, don't forget they're flippin' running, AND they can kick while doing it.  And when it's the dog's job to PROTECT them, as well as herd them, the dog feels a responsibility toward 'em.

And they're TRAINED to do the job, not just thrown out there, with everyone hoping for the best.  (Well, unless you've already GOT well-trained dogs, doing the job, that will train the new dogs, which are usually their offspring.)

Reiterating that I agree with everything Zoomie says about these dogs.

Also, no fucking way would I ever train them as sheep dogs. I mean, why?
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

Re: So. We got another dog Reply #85 on: August 27, 2009, 12:27:25 AM
Exactly!

YOU don't raise sheep, do you?

You don't have enough room for a large dog to run and play in, right?

So you getting a Pit Bull would be the height of stupidity, and therein lies the rub ~

folks get these dogs, for status or whatever,

but have NO EARTHLY IDEA how to truly take care of them, so the dogs go crazy, truly crazy.

The one's that are Trained and Bred to be fighters/personal protection, well, it's a bad mistake on the part of the owners.

But I like cats more... so I have one of those.

Re: So. We got another dog Reply #88 on: August 27, 2009, 10:43:42 AM
Fyre, you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Seriously.

Pits weren't bred (created) in order to herd animals, they were bred to increase their prey drive, increase their kill instinct, and to decrease their sensitivity to pain. They were also bred to not give warning to their opponent (raised hackles, growling, etc.) before they attacked, since a surprise = first strike and first strike often = win. This is why there are so many stories (like Si mentioned) about pits where the attack happens from out of nowhere without warning. In fights, pits are seen wagging their tails in happy excitement just before they attack each other.

A pit's willingness eagerness to attack prey and not stop attacking no matter what damage it might suffer during the process is called "gameness" and is the only thing the breed has been created for. This is what makes the pit such a dangerous dog.

You can't turn a pit bull into a sheep dog any more than you can turn a mastiff into a greyhound.

Simply deciding that a pit isn't a dangerous animal just because you've decided it isn't is delusional.

Fyre, you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. Seriously.

i agree with y'all about all of it, actually.

BUT there's another side to the story, also, of folks that have owned Pits that were, indeed, family pets for all of their lives, with no violence.

And i just used the herding thang 'cuz Nick said something about it, and knowing about space in Japan,

and they COULD be taught to herd...
