A Gravy Separater might do it ~ i would expect the plastic to float, and by being on top, to stick to the sides of the gravy sep. spout.

Also, i have a tea-strainer thing, that is made of super-fine mesh, as big around as a silver dollar, that is hinged to swing open and you release it for it to remain closed, that might be monkeyed around with / customized to Double Strain your liquids.

Just my thoughts...

Oh, and yes, the pestle and mortar would be a good way to crush them ~ hospitals do that for patients that can't take pills, easily.
