I was just saying to my wife: no one plans anything in this country.
California is likely to see rolling blackouts this summer, as is Texas and many other states. No one has done the work to build out solar, wind, & nuclear power to provide enough power to meet demand. No one has pursued necessary upgrades to the power grid. And none of this is a surprise - these trends have been going on for decades. Increased demand, increasing temperatures, long lead times to build new infrastructure (even before pandemic shortages on critical parts), outsourcing of critical manufacturing so you can't even incentivize (or nationalize) your national manufacturing when things are dire...
It's why power companies push those stupid connected thermostats - they want to be able to shut down your air conditioning when loads are high. You know when I absolutely want my air conditioning on? When it's in the 90s or 100s outside.
And they make things worse by banning natural gas in places, pushing for more electric cars, etc. The power structure in the US is inadequate as it is and you have stupid targets like 50% of new cars sold by 2030 should be electric. The power grid won't be ready to support that volume by 2030. Ban gas heaters and stoves? All of that's going on the power grid too!
And fuck California anyway. You can't have that many people in a state with their water situation. Its growth has never, ever been sustainable.
