CT: My city sucks. I literally had to run away from a hotel concierge tonight with a huge bag of laundry on my back. Luckily I had a big head-start. There is a laundromat a few blocks away. It's the only one for probably 40 or more blocks and I've been going there really regularly until suddenly a few months ago they stopped paying their water bill and then boarded up their windows and doors. This local hotel rents space to students as apartments and so the students have begun letting their local friends in to do their laundry because of this big problem. Well the hotel staff have apparently had enough. As I discovered today, they have instituted a stiff fine policy and they just installed security cameras to monitor the laundry area to make sure no townies are stealing water and electricity from them. Well I've been carefully going through my every last item of clothing slowly and I've managed to accumulate a huge load of laundry now so today I got a buddy who lives in the hotel to let me in.
I guess the sight of an obvious non-tenant walking by the front desk with about 80 pounds of clothing in a giant duffel bag upped the dander of the concierge who I could hear begin to flip out as soon as I stepped into the elevator. I went to the laundry room where I've been exactly twice (as a result of being so conservative in my laundering schedule) and as soon as I get the fourth load running, in bursts a very red-faced doorman. After getting screamed at for some 20 minutes by this guy he told me that I could finish the load I had in there and then I had to stop by at the front desk to fill out paperwork and I'd get a $100 fine. So I called my friend who had let me in and who now wanted no part of this and asked him if there was a way to get out without going past the concierge. He told me the back-door route and I took it but the alarms went off as I exited the building. I took some pains to try to shut the door properly to stop it squealing but then I heard someone shouting down the street. Sure enough it was the concierge at the other end of the block.
So I fled, ran the 10 blocks with a hockey bag filled to bursting with wet laundry (the whole 40 minute drying cycle isn't really working), and arrived home exhausted and with the realization dawning that I'm no longer welcome back in that hotel. I think my next step is to invest in a rubbing rack and a plug for my sink (since my apartment has no tub). Which dish detergent works best with whites? Dawn or Pledge?
