I thought it was going to be more expensive than $800-$1000USD.  I was going to probably try to bring something close to $2000 (200,000Yen).

Honestly, you're looking at:
500-1000 for breakfast
500-1000 for lunch
1500-4000 for dinner & drinks, depending on where we go and what we eat.

+ hotel, trains, entrance to attractions etc.

You'll be packing some nice shoes on your way home then, I guess.
