I'm not a musical science expert......I'd like to know how one can tell what their vocal range is.

record yourself singing, figure out what part feels best and sounds good. i'm an alto.

Feels best and sounds good? Wha?  I mean, I can post a clip of my voice if someone can tell from hearing it.

when you're singing, what feels good to sing?

when you're listening, where does your voice sound good?

combine the two and stick with songs in that range.

or get training. my husband went from a tenor to a baritone.

The best example of songs ver comfortable for me to sing are The Doors songs.

Based on your speaking voice (light and fruity) I'd almost guarantee you are in the "tenor" range. However you do not sing classically (or broadway *shudder*)  so I wouldn't bother calling yourself a tenor. Sit by a piano and see if that range is comfortable for you (refer to the keyboard on the wikipedia range) if you are squeaking, cracking or whispering in any of the extremities, try shifting up or down depending. It is more likely that you have an octave and a half to two octaves of vocal range. Without training, very few get beyond that. For what you are choosing to do, an octave and a half to two octaves is sufficient.

And hey, if you don't like your voice part, you can always become a castrato!
