Title: The Montauk Monster
Post by: tricky on May 15, 2009, 10:34:24 AM
What is this thing? Is it a prank by some very skilled artist/ taxidermist? Or something else?

It looks kind of like a warthog to me, but I'm not expert on biology or animal corpses which are sea bloated.

i think they're pretty obviously bloated pit bull (or dogs of a similar breed) corpses that have just recently washed up on shore.

If it's not a hoax it's probably some kind of mutation.  Don't they have a lot of mercury in the water around there, or is that just on the west coast?

Or maybe the really ARE doing weird shit in that Montauk lab, oooooooh spoooky.

oh, yeah, that could definitely be a raccoon! it would've been easier to guess if there had been something next to it for the purposes of gauging its size.

In the link that Si posted, it said that some scientist said the legs were too long in proportion to the rest of the body to a raccoon.

In the snopes article a marine scientist said it's not a raccoon, then later in the same article two other people familiar with raccoons are cited as saying it's a raccoon. This very sciency (http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2008/08/the_montauk_monster.php) article is the one I got the picture from and it's assertion that the creature is a raccoon is the most persuasive discussion I've seen yet.

That makes sense, except for the part where you responded like Danzig's puppet.

it seems to me that testing the dna would be pretty indicative of what the fuck it is. why has no one done that?

Because pictures don't carry DNA.

There's not really a good way to test some DNA sample and know what kind of animal it is.
That must be a myth that TV propagates?

Well couldn't they just get some of it's semen and then compare it against CSI's semen database?

Wrong. There is an excellent database of species DNA indicators, most often accessed by zoological forensic practitioners.

I heard about it on NPR when they were talking about some guy who got busted coming into Miami with illegal birds in his pants.

You should have said "semi-wrong".  If the species is known and well-documented, then looking up the animal can be easy.  But if the species is not well known or completely undocumented, then you can't look them up.

That was my frame of reference:  dropping DNA into a machine doesn't guarantee a species match.

well then they could at least tell whether it was a dog or a raccoon. pretty safe to say those would be well documented.

How the fuck that show stays on air, or why anyone ever gave whatshisface a lead role, is beyond me.

Anyone watch The Soup? Whatshisface from that is always making fun of gingerwhatshisface.
