More and more there have been CT's and posts here and there regarding this stuff. Here's a dedicated thread for it! Post your workout ideas/accomplishments/goals/musings here.

Amy and I had a good week. Went to the gym 4 out of the 5 weekdays and did a 2 hour hike yesterday afternoon.

I work out with my radio partner 3 or 4 days a week, but I just don't think the lifting is enough. Today we did triceps and biceps, but I did an extra 30 mins on the ab weight machine, racking up 50, 60, and 70lbs in 12 rep sets. Also did 3, 12 rep sets of  inverted sit-ups with a 25lbs plate. I also did 15 minutes on the treadmill and threw on 100lbs with the pectoral fly machine for 3 more sets of 12.

I am working in more from here on out from what my partner does. I'm willing to do more for the effort. Since I'm on a renal diet anyway, nutrition really isn't a problem. Hydration, though, is catching me off guard. Good ol' wicked 3am charlie horses... That's a real motherfucker.

What's a charlie horse? Like a cramp or something?

I'm hyperkalemic and in conjunction with my kidney failure, that's not a good idea.

Damn... can you take a potassium supplement or something?

No. In fact, I'm on substances that take potassium out of my system.

I've been trying to work out but it's really hit or miss.  I run like two days a week and play the drums for a couple of hours four days a week.  If you count sex too, then I work out even more!

I'm pretty sure playing drums counts as pretty good cardio. Depending on the style of music, I guess.

If she's down with my brand of brutal death grind, she's kicking some serious jams. Maybe 240 - 300 beats per minute. Google up Atrocious Abnormality. One of the nastiest, sickest metal acts around. And from North Carolina!

Playing that fast is almost impossible for a girl.  I have been working on my double bass and such for years, and I will probably never be able to physically be able to play like that.  I don't have enough power.

Re: working out/exercise/breaking a sweat/etc Reply #14 on: September 20, 2009, 11:05:42 AM
Don`t assume your gender can`t do it because you can`t. It is more about technique than power. Plenty of female drummers can blast.

EDIT: I didn't mean that to sound dickish. If you use your joints more as fulcrums, you may find more speed with ease. Ankles and wrists, Doll. There's the drummer from The Rotted(England), Buzz Cult(Japan), Blackguard(Canada), and a slew more.

Did the gym thing this morning and worked legs, shoulders, and abs.

Leg extensions
12 reps x 115lbs
12 reps x 130lbs
12 reps x 145lbs

Leg curls
12 reps x 130lbs
12 reps x 160lbs
12 reps x 190lbs

Leg press
12 reps x 210lbs
12 reps x 260llbs
12 reps x 310lbs
12 reps x 390lbs

Shoulder rows
12 reps x 50lbs
12 reps x 60lbs
12 reps x 70lbs

Shoulder alternating lifts
40 reps x 20lbs
40 reps x 20lbs

Ab work
2 sets of 20 bicycle kick crunches

I was actually shocked at how much I could press with my legs. I was trying to keep pace with my trainer who has tree trunks for legs. It was difficult to keep up but I hung in there and did it. I feel every bit of it now, some four hours later. Tomorrow morning is going to be a blast. Wooo! Head back on Wednesday.

I've finally settled into a workout schedule I like, now that I'm serious about doing it:

6 weeks @ 3 sets/4-6 reps (I do 6-8 on the arm-focused ones)
Tu: Chinups, Upright Rows, Bent-Over Row, Shrugs, Bicep Curls
Th: Bench Press, Incline Bench Press, Military Press, Close grip Bench Press
Sa: Squats, Stiff Legged Dead Lift, Calf Raises, Ab work
1 week rest
4 weeks Couture Workout
1 week rest
Repeat

I admit I am new to the game, but a whole week off?

Re: working out/exercise/breaking a sweat/etc Reply #18 on: September 20, 2009, 10:09:11 PM
It's my half-assed attempt at periodization.  From the books on strength training I've skimmed, they usually have a period where it's either light work or completely off from weight lifting.

My goals with weight lifting are to increase strength, power & endurance.

I should probably add a third cycle where it's all power lifts, but I think I'm going to stick with this one for at least 4 or 5 cycles and then maybe reevaluate.

This. I used to over-train like crazy, and while my genetic tendency towards being HARD FUCKING CORE kept me from tearing all my muscles to ribbons, I was also permanently a good ten pounds underweight.
It's truly a shame I am no longer there to yell at girls to make out with you.

The last time I was underweight  was 1999 when I got married. I was 160lbs at 6`1. In eight years I fattened up to 265.

Power's got nothing to do with it. It's the pa that makes it so loud.

Then again, I fucking hate double bass. You want to hear a maestro with a foot pedal, check out Good Times Bad Times by Zep.

One foot is all you need. Use your other one to get color from the hi hat.

I found that while playing the drums increased my dexterity, it never was good cardio. Lugging around a heavy ass drum set was good for weight training, though.

Your core just doesn't get much work on the drums unless you are sloppy as hell with no technique.

I think this is very true.  I barely break a sweat when I play drums, even if I play for a long time.  I glow at most.  I guess I will have to stick to other ways of making myself smoking hot irresistable.... but I'll probably be too lazy.
