I didn't even put together until today that this thread was about the G-20 Meeting.
Protesting is dumb and pointless. World leaders who travel with security guards 360 degrees around them 24/7 and are ferried from conference to conference in limos, planes, and helicopters, do not care what any number of people are doing on the sidewalk. World leaders don't use side walks. NFL Quarterbacks don't let the fans in the cheap seats call their plays for them.
On top of that, if you were a politician, and someone was protesting what you are doing, they clearly out and out hate you. No one would protest against leaders that they liked. If someone hates you they aren't part of your constituency. If they aren't part of your constituency they aren't helping you get re-elected. If they aren't helping your administration currently, or they aren't helping it in the future, and they hate you, and they aren't voting for you, then fuck 'em because why waste your time? There are plenty of interests you can advance working with people who are actually allied with you, so why compromise with those who hate you? Sure it benefits people to be a little bipartisan and know how to cut deals when deals need to be cut, but I really don't know anyone who ever got their way by standing on the sidelines yelling and screaming and drawing pictures and holding them up.
The 60s was the ultra-rare exception to this rule, because American citizens directly were dying because of the draft and fighting in an unpopular war. When you have a conscripted army, you have to pay attention to what your current and future conscripts want if you want them to fight for you. It isn't like that anymore.
If you want to influence decision making at the highest level you have to go through the system and play the game, and by the time you actually get to where you need to be, you will probably have lost all your ideals and guidance along the way in favor of compromise, because compromise is what makes politics.
