I thought it was "welp" specifically to avoid confusion with the actual word "whelp" - as in baby animal.
Also with smilies,... I don't think any of us have a problem with smilies. The problem is specifically with smilie abuse. A pertinent smilie or two every once in a while is fine. Even a string of them to serve some ironic purpose can be good, but when they form as common a part of the poster's writing as commas, for instance, then the poster has gone too far.
