Mad hax.
That's crazy. Apparently my grandfather was a sharpshooter in WWII. I wonder if that's genetic at all. I've never even held a gun.

EDIT: changed it to sharpshooter since that's what he was, not a sniper.

I held/fired a gun once. A Glock handgun, 17 or 19 or something - I'm not sure. It wasn't quite what I expected, much less kick than I'd thought it'd have, even at age 13. I have no idea what sort of a shot I am since I just fired it into some bushes. Guns are fucking scary.

Guns are tons of fun.

Re: hey man, nice shot Reply #6 on: May 04, 2010, 04:39:46 AM
I fired a friends .44 and he was all like, dude better hold it with both hands, and I was like "boom" and hit what I was aiming at first try anyway. You just have to remember to let the pistole rock in your hand a bit instead of trying to hold on to it to tight.

I think I may want to shoot someone in the face soon, specifically with the intent to kill, is that really so bad?

Re: hey man, nice shot Reply #8 on: May 04, 2010, 10:09:48 AM
Yeah I'd be interested in shooting a gun at some point. I view them sort of like roman candles insofar as they're like handheld firecrackers. Lots of bang and excitement that can be fun but also very dangerous. I've also been told by very serious gun fetishists that that's an extremely unhealthy perspective and that I'm what's wrong with the whole gun issue. These people seem to be more interested in respect for the gun and its role as the protector of the household and of greater American individualism. To that I say phooey.

I'm split over the whole gun rights issue. On the one hand I think that they can be fun and if treated carefully by reasonable people they can be a fine thing. I'm not even against their use by private individuals in protection of their families from hordes of rapists (or whatever it is they imagine they have to protect their families from). In theory, I'm generally kind of opposed to most government controls. On the other hand guns are dangerous as fuck and the problem is that they are often treated completely recklessly and the majority of Americans are unreasonable people at least some of the time. Literal protection from gangs of rapists and other evildoers is fine, but often gun nuts will mistake lost strangers or black people selling magazine subscriptions or children sleepwalking at 3AM for evildoers and that is not so fine. So the whole thing boils down to a balancing of the opposing interests.

While I'd like to say that gun ownership should be the right of any man who chooses to own a gun, unfortunately all men have equal rights under the law. So there's no way to restrict gun ownership to the class of reasonable and cautious citizens. I know there's the whole licensing thing but as we all know that's never stopped a wacko from getting his hands on whatever gun he wants.

I'm forced to look to analogous situations like drugs which can be fun but are also potentially dangerous as fuck if used by maniacs. Obviously the drugs are mostly all illegal. Society has placed them on the side of the balance where they are willing to give up the fun to protect against the danger. Other drugs like alcohol have been salvaged from the "it's too dangerous" side. I guess what I'm left with is a bit of a cop out for an answer. Ultimately I'd rather see guns banned than see marijuana and some of the psychedelics like psilocybin banned. I'd rather see tobacco banned than guns. I think society has some reworking of the system to do before I can properly judge whether or not the danger of guns outweighs the fun/use.

Had to pull my .38 on the job once.

Didn't feel like it'd be worth the parade.

I haven't fired a gun since I was nine, plugging paper plates on the Sabine river with my dad's Ruger .22 LR.  I have a .22 Revolver of some kind that my uncle left in this house when he died, that I keep around in case of emergency.  He filed the damn hammer off of it for some stupid reason, though, but it's double-action so it's still usable.

I've shot rifles and shotguns a bunch of times. When I was a boy scout we used to go to the local rifle club once a year. Why they have shotguns in NZ I'll never know. I also let off a canon once and yes, it was as awesome as pirates make it appear.
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

My dad got to fire one a few years back in the town square for some Wild West shootout re-enactment or something.  God damn that thing was loud, it was awesome.

We Texans get to have all the cool fun.  Sometime I'll tell the story of that 4th of July when a bunch of Rednecks got too drunk, filled a waterbed with propane, almost detonated two men and flipped a pickup truck on its side.

He did that so when he was hiding it in his pocket, the hammer wouldn't snag when he pulled it out.

I wouldn't put it past him to have filed it off just to practice gunfighter quick-drawing for fun.  This is the same guy that almost got arrested because he somehow got his hands on a  pre-ban Tec-9 and started machine-gunning his backyard one day.  Right here literally in the middle of town.

I still have no idea how he didn't get arrested for that shit.
