Converting fully to brown rice, pasta and bread is one of the best thinks I ever did.
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

I'm fairly lucky in that, even being raised by white-bread eating, tv-loving stationary folks, I have what seems like an innate love for all whole grains. I will not purchase or consume processed shit, including the nasty staples of my parents- all-in-one meals like hamburger helper and bertolli.....

I love natural quick foods like apples. Any fruit or vegetable will do the trick.

I prefer to take the time to wash, prepare, and cook my meals.

My parents were like any other parents of the time, looking for convenient ways to feed a six-person family, so we were fed all of that kraft shit.

One day, when I was 27, I saw something on Food Network that I thought sounded tasty and I tried my hand at cooking a meal- my first, and I have prepared every single meal I have eaten since.

I think the recipe was for something like a twist on Shepherd's Pie.

My fiance was horrified when she saw my favorite all-in-one too lazy to cook meal - I'd microwave a couple red potatoes, frozen broccoli and cauliflower, some Morningstar fake meat, and throw it all in my magic bullet with a couple tablespoons of ricotta cheese and random herbs.

I feel fortunate my mom didn't serve too many all-in-one things or Kraft stuff (until my sister became obsessed with it in her teens).

I was just talking about this with my sister the other day, we were saying how lucky we were to have grown up with parents with "exotic" tastes in food. I don't mean anything truly exotic or unusual, but instead of the constant meat and potatoes stodge that's typical of American and British families, we always had lots of different things to try. It helps that both of my parents are fantastic cooks, as is my sister now. I'm getting there. I started much later than she did so I'm not even close to her ability yet, but my repertoire is expanding steadily, and the things I do know how to cook I cook very well.

I am lazy, though. I much prefer the cook a huge batch and freeze portions method to cooking something fresh every night.

Hot Damn! I almost cannot express how much I LOVE fresh foods and being able to come up with a meal that is nutritious and delicious, with no preemptive planning. On the spot creativity. It's like painting or sculpting for me. I can't wait to be able to do this in my own place, and when Zoomie visits. It's fun, I haven't had any complaints about my cooking from my kids, and the douche roommate loves it of course- he can't cook and thinks when I put cumin in the eggs for the morning burritos that it's some sort of magic.
My parents think using fresh garlic is "weird", lol.

Garlic is absolutely necessary in almost everything. I do my best not to hang around with anyone who doesn't like garlic or complains about the smell. Nothing against 'em, they're just not my kind of people.

Garlic people are my people too.
I like mincing garlic :)
Have you seen those jars of already-minced garlic in some clear liquid?
That stuff is icky IMO.
I've found that with the right combination of garlic, herbs and spices, I can omit salt almost always.

I don't really like garlic, except for in garlic bread i think.
It's alright, I don't mind it that much, but when I'm cooking I don't use it.

Re: I've got questions, You've got answers. Reply #115 on: November 11, 2011, 10:54:59 PM
I like garlic, eat a lot and it comes out of your pores. Nothing to be done about that.

Like it or not, it's there.

I think that after a while the garlic scent that comes out of pores kinda just melds with your natural scent. I don't think anyone has ever been like, "um, you smell like garlic." then again, probably everyone I know likes garlic. :)

'melds with your natural scent' ... i.e. you start to smell like garlic all the time

? =P

Maybe. But if everybody's eating it then nobody can smell it.

No, really I don't think you'd start to smell like garlic all the time...

Ok, do people in general do things like say, "Hey man, you smell like garlic."?

If they don't, then I will never know the truth.

If they do, then I apparently really don't smell like garlic.

I know a few poeple who eat garlic as frequently as I do, and theye really don't smell like garlic either, BUT! I eat garlic, so maybe I can't tell??

How did delicious garlic become such a mindfuck for me?

And, depending on how it is cooked, it smells and tastes differently.......

I like to raost garlic, it ends up with a very smooth, rounded out flavor. :)
