Jailed porn star Ron Jeremy is asking a Los Angeles judge to break up his serial rape case into separate trials for each of his 21 sex assault accusers.

At a hearing Monday, the judge said he was ready to rule on Jeremy’s motion, filed Feb. 2, but prosecutors asked for more time to respond to the lengthy and novel severance request that seemed to catch them by surprise.

Jeremy, 68, who was born Ronald Hyatt, argues his right to due process will be violated if he’s forced into one umbrella trial for his long list of charges ranging from assaulting minors and drugging women for sex to forcible groping. “Mr. Hyatt moves to sever the allegations related to each individual Jane Doe, so that separate jury trials would result for each one of the Jane Does,” the motion reads.

I'd generally agree with this.

On the one jury trial I served on, the prosecution had I think 5 different charges total. A couple of degrees of assault, weapons charges, I actually don't remember them all. Most of the time spent in deliberations was arguing about the charges; half of the jury didn't really understand the charges. They couldn't follow a logical argument. You argue about intent for a couple of hours, seem to come to an agreement, then you move on to the next charge and the previous argument was completely forgotten. We sent questions to the judge worded slightly differently 3-4 times before some of the members of the jury finally came around.

I really hate the fact that prosecutors often just kind of charge everything and hope something sticks in the jury room, instead of picking their charges and actually making a clear case for them. I've always hated that and I hate it even more having seen it in play on an actual jury.

Multiple cases with multiple charges? No fucking way does that jury have any clue what they're doing. Every case should be separate if it was a separate instance.

I have argued this stance many times ...
IE: You see it on COPS; "You will be charged with XXX, XXXX, XXXXX" (and you're like, 'what?') ....
It's simply because if they put every little charge on the paperwork, SOMETHING will stick ....

Yeah. Especially "resisting arrest". Resisting arrest should not be a charge for anyone, ever. It's complete bullshit; if you're not 100% compliant in the way that the cop thinks you should be, then they try to slap that one on you. Plus, resisting some dickhead initiating force and trying to restrain you is, quite arguably, a natural response where actual resistance does occur.

Again, seen all the time on Cops; "I AM complying; you're on my arm!"

If there's clearly a fight, then, ok ...

Oh, wait, for those other times there's "resisting arrest without violence" ...
