There's no reliability studies done with them yet.  They've only existed for a handful of years, and the technology has changed dramatically since they first hit the shelves.

I wouldn't use SSDs for any kind of backup medium.

I have a $100 external hard drive that I bought to back up my laptop. It's still sitting there unused because I'm a dumbass and can't figure it out. I should get one of my computer literate friends to help me out.

Oi. Take the power plug and put two of its prongs into the little three-hole openings on the wall of your house. There's only one way to do it so this may take as many as six tries.
Next, take the other plug and try it out on all the holes in your laptop. There are 9 holes on mine so this may take that many tries.
Most modern laptops will put a little "external harddrive" icon on your desktop. drag and drop files you want to save onto this icon.

There's some free software from western digital's website that'll take care of things for you (as opposed to the pay stuff from the drive itself, go figure).  I keep forgetting to install it for you when I'm up there.

Can you tell me what the model of the thing is?  I recall it's a MyBook, but I don't remember if it's an Essential, Mirror, or what.  Let me know!

nooooooooo!!! Don't use the useless shit that the drive comes with, because what it will do is backup everything on your hard drive and if the external is smaller than the one in your box it'll fill it up.

I'f you're like me you've bought the external drive to put stuff on for use on more than one machine, not for backing anything up.
