This girl said to me today that she wanted the swine flu situation to get worse so it'd become a level 6 panic and people will be told to stay inside their homes.

Pandemic doesn't mean total anarchy, it only means widely spread contagion.
This could be black plague, or it could be an out-of-season cold.
Like yours.  Only different.

I dislike the media being all about the ratings and not so much about reporting the truth. It doesn't seem to matter if it is a cold or Black Death to them, they want you scared.

I agree with this completely.

But the news has never been about the news - it's always been about selling papers (or commercials, or impressions).
Look at how Peter Parker made his money.

I would like to defend some media.

There ARE some show on TV that do try to bring you the story and nothing but the story. Ture, they pick stories that are of interest to the masses, but ..it's not always the case. These show are usualy on public funded networks ( no suprise ). Ive been watching PBS for awhile now, it seems okay, yet I still get the feeling it's biased. With the Australian ABC shows I watch, I can tell when it's being pushed by a lobby, but I can't pick it on PBS, not yet anyway.

The publicly-funded shows get money from a public that wants to prove the mass media wrong.
So, you're going to have bias in that direction, too.  Though, I'm a pessimist about it, I suppose.

I like the BBC, although they do talk about the Queen a lot
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

I do think that the US PBS news programming is excellent. I believe that it is balanced and factual, unlike FOX. Or at least not strident in its opinion.

I like the BBC.

That's all that needed to be said, I've suspected for years.

As for the 2009 H1N1 type A influenza, here are my predictions:

We will find out that Mexico lied, that the numbers infected were 10 times what we were told, hence the higher death rate there.

When H1N1 comes back later this year in a mutated state, we will be wholly underprepared, it will race through most continents, causing massive respiratory failures world wide with a death toll exceeding one billion.

I will be someplace safe with 200 gallons of water, 500 pounds of food and 1000 rounds of ammunition. Don't get too close, I'mma survive this one.

I think it's like one of those bird flus that pop up every couple of years in the east - people in close proximity to the animals get it, but it never really makes the jump to effective person-to-person transimission.  We haven't even had a thousand cases and it's been how long?  Flus move way faster than that generally, I think.

I also suspect that the health of the people who caught it in Mexico should be questioned.  Flus generally kill the old, very young, and people in poor health.  In a country that struggles so much with poverty, I wouldn't be shocked if the people who died (and don't fall into the young and old categories) had other, untreated conditions which complicated the matter.

I'm still hoping for a zombie apocalypse 2012, so this flu better not get in the fucking way next year.

What seems to be killing the otherwise-healthy mid-20s folks in Mexico is actually their own immune system.  Cytokine storms; the immune system severely overreacting to the virus, leading to a deadly feedback loop.

Yes it is, compared to what we get to see of US news programs over here. I just cant tell if im being missled sometimes due to not seeing enough of the " normal " US programs. I am aware of the ALan Jones type TV they do have.

and does anybody else watch Jim Lehrer always thinking....if he had flames in his eyes he'd be perfect for the role of Satan ?

So, the CDC says its gonna be a bad winter for us!!

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/

WHO agrees!

Quote
On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a global pandemic of novel influenza A (H1N1) was underway by raising the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6.

but!

Quote
This action was a reflection of the spread of the new H1N1 virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus.

Usually work gives us free flu vaccinations (not that it ever works), and guess who acquired some Tamiflu for two people? This one right here!
Back off, Bitches!

I got a flu shot two years in a row.  I didn't get a flu shot any year before that, no flu.  I am not taking anymore unnecessary vaccines.  I took the Guardasil shot and had to do research on it for school and regretted getting it.  The shot only covers you for 3-5 years.  It's main side effect is death.  AND they have no idea what the long term side effects are.  I love being a government funded guinea pig.
